I was really surprised and sad when I found out from a classmate this afternoon, at first I didn't believe it. He wasn't my favorite film director personally, but he definitely had a lot of talent. The English Patient was a brilliant film (something that you can't fully appreciate unless you've read the nearly impossible to adapt novel it's based on), and Cold Mountain and The Talented Mr. Ripley definitely had promise... I definitely feel like his filmography was incomplete. Here's the full story.

Sad. He's one of those directors I felt was really talented even if I didn't like his films. Or actually, I really like The Talented Mr. Ripley. Very tense stuff. Moody.

Wow. That is extremely sad and very unexpected. I have his first three films and although he's not way up on my list of directors. I appreciate his work and definitely felt he had a lot more to offer. It's too bad he had so much in development that we'll never see.
