I was going to post this last night, but I couldn't decide which forum to put it in.

And then I wondered how many people here ever heard of the guy?

Another tragic loss, but we can take heart with this passing, because Mr. Clarke left behind a long and enduring legacy. I am far from a fan of science fiction, but he was one of the writers of the genre that I did enjoy reading from time to time.

He's not exactly obscure.

Yeah, the news of Clarke's passing bummed me out, too. I've only gotten into a short list of the classics from old school sci-fi writers of his approximate generation (Stranger in a Strange Land, Fahrenheit 451, Brave New World, Dune, etc.), though it's hard to pin down what generation of writers Clarke belonged to, since Clarke wrote for so many decades.

2001 was the first Kubrick movie I ever got into, and when I saw it as a teenager it prompted me to read every book in Clarke's Space Odyssey series as they were published. Books with a transformative theme are easy for adolescents to get into, I guess. But I haven't had a chance to check out the Time Odyssey series yet, though. Haven't read all those Rama books yet either, dang it.

Favorite Clarke quote (his Third Law, of course):

"Any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic."

"Go to the sound of cutting wood."
