Any Lovecraft fans on here?

Ah, the grand-daddy of American horror and inventor of the "weird" genre! Of course I love him!

My cousin lives in "Innsmouth" (Newburyport, Massachusetts), right on the shore, and I had to tell her why that was so cool! (Watch the movie Dagon if you don't know what I'm talking about.)

The idea of the mythos is so genius. Let other writers use your "props" (like the Necronomicon) and locations and people start thinking it's real.

I'm working on a Lovecraftian screenplay right now, coincidentally.

I am working on a screenplay right now as well.  I am hoping to finish it before the Disney Fellowship deadline.  Although winning the Fellowship is a long shot.  And even longer shot if I couldn't even win Duke City, LOL.  I am thinking of writing a really low budget (one location) script next time, so I may attempt to direct it.  Even though I do need to hire a proof reader since grammar isn't my strong point.  It is weird though, the first screenplay I wrote when I was 19 got the most attention.  It seems like everything I have written after that, people seems to think sucks.  Although I think it is much better than the script I wrote when I was 19.  Although the script I wrote when I was 19 did have a wild world that I created in it.

I just purchased The Call of Cthulhu and Other Weird Stories and started reading a couple of the short stories. His writing style takes getting used to, but once you dive in his imagination is one of a kind in its own unsettling way.

Have liked Lovecraft, not loved, for quite a few years now.  Interesting and entertaining, just not that scary.

The problem with going after his stuff is it is very hard to find used and if you try to get all of the stories you end up with lots of duplicates of certain of his works as some are found in several volumes while others in only one.

If you don't mind derivative stuff I read 'Shadows over Baker Street' while at my fathers place and found it quite enjoyable.  It is a collection of short stories by modern authors melding the Cythulhu (SP?) mythos into the setting of the Sherlock Holmes stories.  While anyone who is a H.P.  fan might like this a bit of familiarity with Doyle's detective, particularly 'A Study in Scarlett'  would likely enhance the experience.

I have that book! I enjoyed it immensely. :D

You don't think so?!  He's the only author I've actually had to put down because I was getting freaked out.

Ok, I lied. Palahniuk's story "Guts" from Haunted I had to put down, only because I had read a really graphic story about lynching right before, so I was already about to lose my lunch.

Nope, no scare, but now that I think about it I can't remember ever being scared by fiction. Moved to tears sure but not scared.  Non fiction, well there I find stuff that scares me all the time.

Haven't tried Haunted.  Read Fight Club and then Lullaby which seemed so similar to F.C. that I stoped at that.  However this is the second time I've... Uh, good things?, about haunted so I might check it out if I get the chance.  But as most of what I read I borrow from the store (no, really, I bring it back when I'm done) and Palahniuk is SO popular I'm reticent about taking it out.

If you've heard too much, you'll probably be disappointed.  Yes, he (Chuck) is ridiculously popular. Someone bought me Survivor, and I have to say it really sucked.  But Haunted is really in the tradition of the gothic, with splatter mixed in.

H.P. was the first author to really do the wet and gross aspect of gothic fiction that became what the popular authors of the genre today do.  So it's relevant.

I have read about half of the 16 or so stories in The Call of Cthulu and other Stories - although they all use similar supernatural morbid themes, I love the unsettling mood towards the unknown and what lurks just beyond the corner of the eye according to Lovecraft.

Interesting that your current avatar shows the man who played Dr. Necessiter in the movie The Man with Two Brains in which Dr Hfuhruhurr falls in love with the brain of Anne Uumellmahaye!

Hate football? Kinda harsh. Did you have a bad experience when you were a kid or something? Sound like Bill Maher talking about religion. Oh well. I love everyone on here, warts and all. Gotta run. College football is on today! :) HP Lovecraft rules!

Yeah but he couldn't break a tackle to save his ass.

Regarding differences, those are the sweet little things that make relationships interesting. At least for rest of us.

Let's back up for one second, redbear.  First, I've never met this guy. Second, a girl's entitled to some standards, no matter how wildly different from me anyone I've dated has been.  Football's a dealbreaker, just like bad oral hygiene.

And if you must know, yes.  It is related to a childhood trauma. So there.

redbear--you have my eternal respect for this sentence alone. made me smile(even tho it hurt to) for the first time in a day and a half. and yeah, like angel said, haunted is probably not worth your time, as its no big departure from his other works(except that in the way he ties entertainment or celebrity culture to the splatter gothic themes that are more prevelant). so steal it if you must, but its in most libraries, and only takes a few sittings to get through. either way, i find you a kindred spirit, and not just because of our avatars. and yes, i couldnt care less about football. no offense meant to coolspringsj.
