Anyone watching the football (or soccer)?

I've never seen it discussed on here before. It's been quite a good tournament so far, despite England not being in it, and my second team, Italy, losing 3-0. What is the publicity for this like in the US, would you even know it was going on?

Typical English arrogance right there folks!

I obviously meant it's been good to watch despite my team not being there for me to support.

I apologise then. Even though everyone is tipping the Netherlands I think Croatia will win it. At least you English could say you were put out of the qualifying rounds by the winner :)

I'm half-Italian so I have got one team in the tournament.  I don't think we'll get past Spain though. My team, have recently signed Luka Modric, the young Croatian midfielder, so I'll be behind them once Italy go out

A Spurs man! I'm an Arsenal fan myself.

Signing Modric was good work. Spurs under Juande Ramos will be a very handy side next season I reckon.

Hopefully, we gotta keep Berba though, 'cos I can't see us signing another striker anywhere near as good as him, although we have been linked with Podolski recently.

Apparently, Arsenal are really close to signing Nasri. I haven't seen much of him at the Euro (he came on against Italy and then was taken off after Abidal was s/o ) but I've heard he's a reallly good young player.

Hmmm... this conversation is too good-natured for a Spurs fan - Arsenal fan. I'll try and be a bit more argumentative next time...

I am one of the few Americans who care about Euro 2008.  Unfortunately, soccer is not as popular over here in the States with all of the other sports we have.  The Netherlands have looked fantastic so far.

I reckon Holland will win too. Russia were really entertaining in the first half yesterday aswell, not that they will win. I'm looking forward to Germany v Portugal tonight, even though I should be revising for my Law exam tomorrow.

Coolsprings, could you enlighten me as to the main North American competition. Is it the Gold Cup? Here, in Britain, we get quite into the African Cup of Nations, and even the Copa America, but we never hear anything about the North American competition. What's it like? I guess it's just between USA and Mexico really. I've just been looking it up, and how come Brazil have competed in it??

I guess it's the Gold Cup. It doesn't get a lot of coverage and the competition isn't as tough as over in Europe.  The talent in MLS is better than when it started but doesn't hold a candle to the elite European leagues.  I enjoy the US world cup qualifying matches, the Euro and World Cup, and the champions league.  The Euro 2008 matches come on TV around 2 in the afternoon over here so I am usually at work.

That's a bummer. It's perfect in England, because when there's two matches, they start at 5pm and then 7.45pm, and now they'll only be 7.45 games.

What's the Premiership coverage like in the States? Is it more than Serie A, or La Liga, or do they all get nothing?

Soccer gets little to no coverage in the US.  ESPN here is dominated by NFL, MLB, and NBA.

Just had to add that the Turkey comeback against the Czech Republic was the match of the tournament so far.

You've got to know where to look for it. I'm English, moved to the States in '96, and in just twelve years the coverage of football here has grown incredibly. It will never be on a par with 'football' here (pro and college) or hoops, or even baseball despite that sports' struggles, but with the decline of hockey, 'soccer' is definitely creeping around behind, if not exactly in, the average American sports fans' conscience.

The average American wants little or nothing to do with it - but it is a sport played widely at school age and I believe with the gradual growth of Major League Soccer and continued exposure to the major tournaments will gradually grow the acceptance of soccer in the US.

In the meantime, Fox Soccer Channel shows English Premier League games live on a Saturday and, if you've got a dish there's always Setanta, who have a different slate of games and show the others tape-delay; by the end of the weekend, all games are screened in their entirety. The 'lunchtime kickoff' here means 6:30am, so it's tough to find a bar that will open that early!
