QUOTE:QUOTE: Besides, you don't want to see a director do the same movie over and over again. |
I wonder if his next one will be about "A Woman in Trouble".
| Nah, it'll be about two women in trouble, but in the end it turns out they're the same person, oopsie daisy.

QUOTE: I bought Strait Story and thought it was well done and I could discern DL's touches throughout. To me it was a solid movie an a true reality based DL film. Yes, I am reluctant to see E-head, and IE. but never say never, I MAY OVERCOME MY FEAR- RELUCTANCE MORE ACCURATELY- ONE OF THESE DAYS. | What if we got Ted Turner to colorize them, just for you?

Maybe Lynch will completely shoot all our heads away by doing a movie about a man in trouble. There would be uproar!

The Grandmother is in the top 3 of my favourite things that Lynch has ever done.

WAH is more "a man in trouble" than LH. In all his "woman in trouble" films, the fear is distinctly gendered. Sailor's troubles are all about his manhood (duty as a father/husband/caregiver. etc.). In fact, I'd say that LH is more "a woman in trouble" than "a man in trouble" because the crisis of the film has to do with the identity and sexuality of Alice/Renee (who turns out to be Fred/Pete anyway, but it's still more about femininity than anything). And... back on topic... I have seen them all. Those who havent seen EM because it isnt "real lynch" are doing themselves a major disservice, both aesthetically since theyre robbing themselves of a great experience and in the sense that manufactured genre snobbery only hinders critical distance and the ability to analyze objectively. Get over it, I say to you. And as I have said before, I think too much creative control over his works is actually Lynch's downfall. Most of his best work has been done when he was under some form of content constraint or other guidelines he couldn't control. IE was a disaster, in my opinion, for this very reason.

The film that, from what I've heard, is a failure for the opposite reasons as IE.

Haha, yeah, she'd play that part convincingly. Well, either her or Sarah Jessica Parker.

Coming soon to a theater near you... A groundbreaking new vision from acclaimed director David Lynch... "Hoof-Beat of my Heart". The story of a man, his horse, and forbidden desire. Starring Bill Pullman and Sarah Jessica Parker.

That's an interesting theory. Why do you think Alice/Renee turns out to be Fred/Pete?

Alice/Renee turns out to be Fred/Pete in the same way that everyone in the movie turns out to be Fred/Pete in one way or another... it's all just his guilty attempt to rewrite his own narrative. A/R is reduced to a means by which F/P can play out his fantasy of masculine control. The incongruity of what he sees as reality (i.e., "you'll never have me!") is what fuels his delusion and the mobius strip of confronting himself (Mystery Man) and hiding from his guilt (Pete). That's my take anyway.

Geoff I pretty much agree with you on LH -I watched it -on disc-yeah- on Sunday. I would only say that Fred seems to go to prison, is sleep deprived and cracks his head and is drugged by the prison doctor. "You'll sleep now." After that i thought (to escape the gory death of Alice and maybe Laurant? not sure on that) he "dreams "the Pete/Alice/ Mr Eddie story to assuage his guilt and escape his incarceration with Pete a more sexually competent character . And at the end the cops review the picture of Laurant,Alice and the other guy-without Renee- kind of underlined that view. Fred saying he liked to remember things his way was a key line. I only add that Fred was " a guy in trouble" -grizzly murder(s?) and a date with "old sparky". Renee was a "woman in trouble"-infidelity leading to her murder. Do folks think Fred murdered Laurant or the other guy or just imagined it to satisfy his score to settle? I lean towards the latter. The casting was as great as the mid 90s music score. Sarah Jessica Parker eh? A good knack for casting.

| According to the DFW essay, Balthazar Getty was a little dipper on the set. Dipper of course meaning dipshit.

To complicate matters, we can't even assume the beginning of the film is "reality" because of the presence of the mystery man and the tapes. So to say that the drugs or anything in the prison scene was the cause of it all might be a little problematic unless you take the mobius loop theory (explained in my Grand Unified Theory, I might add!) and imagine something like that to have initiated the loop.

Yes, the Mystery Man at the party is problematical. A pre full blown fugue episode is all I could offer? Fred goes to prison only for the murder of Alice. I hear the mobius strip construct. Unless the "mob ius strip" is a term for what Renee had to do for Mr. Eddie at gun point. Wait, sorry you said mobius loop. I'll check out your GUT-it is still here on site. What is DFW ? i left bait here for booth above.

QUOTE:QUOTE:QUOTE: Can't an artist be multi-faceted?! |
David Cronenberg is a perfect example of that. He went from Shivers/Rabid to Scanners/Videodrome to Naked Lunch to Dead Ringers to History of Violence/Eastern Promises. That guy has got some killer range in his works. And while not all of them feel like a "Cronenberg" movie, you can tell that they all would have been very different if someone else had done them.
|
Actually, I see a common thread among almost all of Cronenberg's films up until existenz. Since then, he makes standard fare, without that signature Cronenberg style. It's worth noting that he does not write for his films anymore. |
I know it's off-topic, but since you brought up Cronenberg, I would like to say that Eastern Promises didn't look like a a film of his. I liked it, although there were too many daylight scenes for my taste. I like Cronenberg when he does darker movies. This movie, well, if it's got something really cronenberguesque it's those damn bloody moments. Naomi watts was a little flat in there, Viggo was great , better than ever, and with that look he was like an hybrid between Kirk Douglas and Jack Palance! Of course, I'm exaggerating.
"Did they scoff the whole damn Smörgåsbord?" (Audrey) "Gimme a donut!" (Coop)
