If you're in the Seattle area, consider attending the Freethinkers Picnic at Ravenna Park (55th & Ravenna Ave NE) from noon until evening-ish...  Bring something delicious to share & celebrate the most valuable "free" thing we have: our own thoughts.  (yes, Freethinkers is the same as Humanists, Atheists, etc.)

We had a delightful "No Such Thing as a Free Lunch" BBQ to celebrate the 4th yesterday. Though private fireworks were banned in parched and fire-prone California, we HEARD but did not see lots of pops and explosions.

Apricot glazed BBQ chicken, freshly shucked farmers market corn-on-the-cob, deviled eggs, Caesar's salad, German potato salad, farmer's market watermelon and cantelope with Costco raspberries and home made cheese cake for dessert. A yummy good time that was lubricated with a generous supply of wine and ale.

Fortunately no one brought up religion though the impolite political barb was thrust into conversation during dessert thereby souring the atmosphere.

Sigh. Our mothers were right about those dual to-be-avoided topics. Better to discuss when to glaze a chicken - before or at the end.

Pornographers would say that it's traditionally done at the end.

And then there's Caleb just hanging out breaking my mom's sunglasses

Okay, Susan, way to keep church & state separate!  And nice to see ol' Caleb, & maybe I'm reading a bit into this, but his "breaking of his grandmother's sunglasses" signifies his protest of his ancestors' refusal to see reason, blinkering themselves with religion. I knew from meeting him last year that he was a true scorpio, an independent iconoclast first class!!!

Those are Roddy Piper's glasses, so it's the total opposite of what you just said.

So then Caleb has taste. :D Which makes me think I need to return his (EXTREMELY BELATED) Christmas present and get something a little more his style, because I fear the next photo I see will be Caleb setting fire to the array of pants and shirts I picked out for him. :P

My 4th was interesting. Spent it on the coast at the World's Largest Salmon Barbecue, and at around 8pm the fog rolled in quite thick. We camped out in our normal fireworks-watching spot, thinking we'd be able to see everything still...at least some glow through the fog...yeah. Um, all we got was sound. Oh, and some assholes down on the beach below us, shooting off all their emergency flares for fun. We gave up about ten minutes into the show and went back to my aunt's house for drinks, cigars, and Yahtzee. We know how to class it up here in NorCal. :P

Jordan's MOM is Roddy Piper?! WHO KNEW!? That reference was almost too esoteric even for me  (yes, I recall They Live). So, Caleb breaks ugly things? He is soooooo gay (the good way, I mean).
