The first time I was arrested (don't get too worried, I was big into civil disobedience at one point) I finally got to my cell after about 16 hours and waiting for me was a book, a Jackie Collins novel.  Cruel and unusual punishment!  After 24 hours with nothing else to do but worry and occasionally eat I was able to read 9 pages.

Erotica is, to my mind, highly dependent on context, kind of like porn.  You can throw out all the throbbing this and dripping that and, as you say KM, a reader quickly becomes desensitized.  In the context of a good story well written smut can, for me, be an incredible turn on.  I would imagine that one problem with the short story format is you only have so much time to get to the meat of the matter

Iain Banks, my favorite 'straight' (non genera) fiction author had some really hot scenes in his most recent book 'A Steep Approach to Garbadale'.  The context was the key, the characters didn't just start banging away but uh, shall we say eased into the subject.

Porn's the same thing.  One of the reasons I gave up my brief affair with internet porn was their was just too much of everything, it got boring.  The other thing being that it was a rare entry where the women looked like they were enjoying themselves and call me old fashioned but I always thought that if your partner wasn't enjoying themselves something was wrong and you should probably re-assess your tactics, strategy or, most likely, both.

The heat had bled out of the bricks and, three hours after sunset, it was finally starting to cool down to the point where the fans of her computer stopped sounding like the thing was trying to take off.  "Jamison will probably get the A.C. fixed about November 1st, just in time for it to sit until spring when it can break again" she thought for not the first time in the month since it had broken.  It was, as they said, a dry heat and as such barely tolerable with enough fans running.

Worlds danced before her, some where she was known as this and some where she was known as that, all better, or at least different, from the one she normally inhabited.  Not that the real world was that bad, just harder to control.  When they let you down you couldn't just reboot.

More hours passed. While her attention remained fixed intently on the screen there was something about the way she held herself that would suggest to a perceptive observer that she was waiting for something.  I would have been hard to judge if she feared what she was anticipating, longed for it or felt some mixture of the two.

It was the light that first clued her subconscious that something was happening. The ubiquitous orange glow muted slowly, dimming in a way that never happened.  It is possible that she never would have noticed if there had been any light other than the screen but there wasn't so she finally looked up, with a start.  A dense fog swirled outside her windows, a fog that could not be natural.

A minute passed. And then another. She waited, hands still, breath running quick.  In another world her avatar died a particularly messy death. She didn't care. After an eternity a hint of of a voice...

"May I come in?"

She caught her answer before it leapt from her mouth.  Did she really want this?  The things she would have to give up. So much, so much.  To gain what? The chance to live out a fantasy, if that were the right way to put it.  Well, regardless, tonight wasn't the night for final answers.

It may be a while, it may be longer but I will come again.  Do you understand?"  She nodded and, this time, it must have been enough.

The bight itself was hardly worth the name, more of a nip really. She wouldn't have known the skin was even broken if not for the small reddish brown spots she saw on her neck later but the bite, well the bite wasn't really the thing.

It was a white out, like falling down a hole while simultaneously falling up into a light that wasn't light.  It was...  It was beyond words, beyond the ability of any being to express.  You couldn't know it without feeling it, you couldn't know it without being it.  It was to an orgasm what an orgasm was to... Well to everything that came before, that came before the first time you came.  It was coming not of the body but of the mind, of the spirit.
