Embrace of the Vampire gets a pass because of Alyssa Milano in her birthday suit.

Saw the first Star Wars movie the day it opened & was truly hyped! I love GOOD science fiction... which this definitely was not. State of the art special effects, sure. But horrid writing coupled with wooden acting = a very expensive bad movie. Watched the 2 sequels on video to ensure that I wasn't drawn in by the THX experience. Nope, more of the same. I've strenuously avoided any more of this sad, yet puzzlingly lucrative franchise. My son recently saw(& regretted) seeing Clone Wars. Told ya so... For the record, I do like Star Tours, mainly because it features the thing SW does well. Plus, the Paul Ruebens guide character. |
HERESY! YOU WILL BE CLEANSED!
Just kidding. I mean I hope you will be cleansed at some point but I'm not taking the job. I was going to ask then remembered there was a 'how old are you thread' in the recent past and discovered you must have been an ancient, jaded (knowledgeable?) 18 or 19 on its release day, which makes sense. I was 12 and it hit me like a ton of Wookie, loved the second, liked the third, except those Ewoks and their victory celebration. Jub jub this ya little rats. I was pretty sure the second three were going to flop for this very reason. Nothing Lucas could have done would have lived up to the effect the first movies had on me as a kid and I suspected it would be the same with others.
One could argue that the Star Wars movies were not Science Fiction at all but Space Opera, Space Opera being characterized by a complete lack of science. One could if one were pedantically inclined, which I am not.

| Space Opera, yeah... I guess in space, no one can hear you SING either. Harlan Ellison was hired by Lucas to be their technical consultant. Ellison told them that there'd be no BOOMS in a space explosion, as there's no atmosphere. After this & other technical errors were pointed out & poo-pooed, he walked. There's no science in this & no interesting characters, plots or philosophical points of view (The Force? Please...) . I just felt like, after hearing about the little films that nobody really cares about being shat upon, it was time for me to give my minus 2 cents on the most popular & overrated franchise of all time. The most interesting things about Star Wars are the things about it in Kevin Smith's Askewniverse. And I was 21 or 22 when S.W. 1 was unleashed...

Wasn't trying to slam your op OSF just reflecting on how much ones point of perspective matters in judging things as being good or bad and how often the things that I remember as being FANTASTIC end up disappointing me when I revisit them as an adult, Star Wars having been one of them although I guess, looking back, that last part wasn't clear. Also poking a little fun at the cults of people who do conting to revere the stuff from their youth. But what the hell, if they want to more power to them in my opinion.

An American Haunting. I actually went to see this at the cinema. In hindsight, i should have handed one of my mates six pounds to repeatedly boot me in the knackers.

An American Haunting was terribad. I was surprised at how crap it was. Right now at this very moment I'm watching a shite horror film called Ring of Darkness. Get this plot...it's about a boy band whose members are zombies. They have to get a new lead singer who isn't a zombie. He realizes they're zombies. Hilarity ensues. Much bad pop music. Silly attempts to make cut scenes look like bits from boy band videos. Ryan Starr attempting to act. Adrienne Barbeau is the band's manager. That woman is shameless.

Ghosts of Mars was on TV last night. I think that one went past bad, way past campy, and settled on one click shy of unwatchable. It had Pam Greer, Ice Cube, Natasha what's her name from Species, and the james bond wannabe from The Transporter.

I watched this winner last night. I'm actually embarrassed by that. Like, I debated even mentioning it.
