Does Jonathan Demme's movie Stop Making Sense count as a rock and roll video?  The Talking Heads concert film. My favorite.

Like single songs?  Little Red Corvette is pretty hot & the Stones don't have very creative vids for most of their songs, but their cover of Harlem Shuffle is damn cool, directed by Ralph Bakshi & animated by John Kricfalusi (pre-Ren & Stimpy).  Lol Creme did some very fabulous stuff in  Godley & Creme's  Cry, & Peter Gabriel's  Sledgehammer.

Some of the videos that popped in my head as soon as I read this are as follows:  Runaway Train - Soul  Asylum,  Hurt - Johnny Cash,  Thriller - Micheal Jackson.

Hey REBEL!  If you love David Byrne you must see True Stories (if you haven't already).  Byrne directed and stars in this Byrnian look at small town Virgil, Texas.  Embedded in this wacky, pseudo-documentary are about a half dozen rock videos, all Talking Heads songs, but some sung by characters in the movie. John Goodman is great as a man advertising for a wife (call 554-WIFE!)  There's a version of Puzzling Evidence that rocks out and tells it like it is!  It's like one long performance art piece, wild costumes, and it will all make you laugh!  See David Byrne in fancy western wear and a huge, black Stetson! (And it looks to me like Byrne has seen his share of Lynch movies!)

There's a satellite radio station, Radio DavidByrne.com that streams his "current playlist", always good listening, very eclectic.

That Martin Scorsese movie about The Band.

"Harry, I'm going to let you in on a little secret. Every day, once a day, give yourself a present. Don't plan it, don't wait for it, just let it happen. Could be a new shirt at the men's store, a catnap in your office chair, or two cups of good, hot, black coffee. Like this."  -Dale Cooper

That would be The Last Waltz. And Scorsese's latest doc on my faves, the Rolling Stones, called Shine A Light. The Stones have likely the most rock video movies of them all. Gimme Shelter (Maysles Brothers), Ladies & Gentlemen: The Rolling Stones & Cocksucker Blues (Robert Frank), Let's Spend The Night Together (Hal Ashby) & subsequent  concert tour docs on Steel Wheels, Voodoo Lounge, Bridges to Babylon,  & 2 box sets (Four Flicks & The Biggest Bang). Oh, & Rock & Roll Circus. I would say to avoid the historic, yet horrible Hyde Park Concert. It was Mick Taylor's live debut & farewell to Brian Jones, but they're underrehearsed & out of tune. An embarassing shambles...  (oh, forgot  Godard's Sympathy for The Devil. Not a fave of mine either)

Ha!  I was watching MTV in '83 while on casual status (broken leg) in Air Force basic training and Little Red Corvette came on (I think that's the one.)  There's Prince dancing with a Lisa & Wendy who are in their underwear (again, if I recall correctly after 25 years (25 YEARS? HOLLY SHIT!)) and my fellow airman says "He's a faggot." Just a little homophobia in the Air Force then, I'm sure it's much better now.  I didn't say anything but had to wonder how he got that from the content of the video.

David Byrne is great.  One of my favorite stories from when I worked at The Worlds Greatest Bookstore; Most authors who came to sign are brought by at least one escort, hired by their publisher to drive them, hold their hands and kiss their butts.  Well I'm working at the front counter and Byrne's scheduled to sign.  This guy comes riding up on a bicycle, hops off and locks it to the rack outside. He walks in, pulls off his helmet and sure enough it's David Byrne.  We direct him to the space and he walks down, cleats clacking all the way, does his signing, comes back up, goes out and gets on his bike and rides away. Great guy, good musician as well.

As to the question, I don't know.  When I'm at my parents house surfing the waste land that is T.V. I can never find any videos.  If forced I would have to say China Girl by Bowie just because it's the first one I can remember from my first viewing of MTV when I walked into the T.V. room at the airmens club in basic, I think I sat there for a couple hours, mezmerized.

Well it was more than 4 years ago but...  Very thin and I'm guessing as tall as I am (6'1") or taller but not by more than an inch or two. The store has a riser that puts you up by maybe three inches over the customers and he did not stand as tall as I did with that boost, if my memory serves which it often does not.

Are you looking for strictly rock-n-roll videos or just music videos in general? 'Cause we've got a mix here, and I want to make sure I actually offer up the right genre. (since, y'know, Michael Jackson, David Byrne, and Prince are definitely NOT rock-n-roll)

LOL, yeah.  I think the reason why I thought of Thriller because back in the day it was my favorite video and I like it because it seems to be one of the videos that changed videos.

I've been a huge prodigy fan since I was 11 (circa 1992) and only got to see them live for the first time in 2006. Amazingly cool band.

I'm pleased they're appreciated across the pond too!

SWEET! That makes it a whole lot easier for me. :D I couldn't think of any rock videos that weren't mostly guys jumping around on stage. :D

LetsRoque, you named the one video I was going to name...Prodigy's "Smack My Bitch Up". I've always just been so keen on that one. It was banned over here almost immediately, so trying to get hands on it proved to be difficult for a long time.

I'm going to chew on this one further and kick out a few more faves later. I was a massive fan of music videos for so long, I have a vast repertoire from which to cull. :D
