"Harry, I'm going to let you in on a little secret. Every day, once a day, give yourself a present. Don't plan it, don't wait for it, just let it happen. Could be a new shirt at the men's store, a catnap in your office chair, or two cups of good, hot, black coffee. Like this."  -Dale Cooper

This is just a small cross-section obviously. Most of my time as a kid was spent reading but you didn't ask for my entire literary history, so I just chose the ones that either marked some point in my life or I still cherish to this day. :) Most of these books I read by the age of 10, save for Judy Blume and Jenny Davis, both of which I read in junior high.

Book Series:
The Hardy Boys
Nancy Drew
The Happy Hollisters (long story behind this)
Little House on the Prairie

Novels:
The Phantom Tollbooth by Norton Juster and Jules Feiffer
The House With a Clock In Its Walls by John Bellairs (I really didn't care for the rest of the "series" that much, so)
Forever by Judy Blume
Sex Education by Jenny Davis
Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs by Judi & Ron Barrett
The Fall of Freddie the Leaf by Leo Buscaglia (I don't care what age you are, this book will make you cry)
The Diddakoi by Rumer Godden
Roots by Alex Haley
The Amityville Horror by Jay Anson

Richard Scary- Anything but particularly the Biggest World Book Ever

Beyond that not much that I can remember. One of the great things about working in used books is that every once in a while I will find something that I've not seen in 35-40 years and I'll have this wonderful burst of joy that comes with remembering a childhood love.

One example would be the Dr. Seuss book, not by the good Doctor but on the same imprint, about the boy who over feeds his goldfish which procedes to grow to an imense size.  The title, obviously, escapes me at the moment.

"It's not so bad as long as you can keep the fear from your mind." - D. Cooper

"I must not fear. Fear is the mind killer." - P. Atreides

"Whoever can see through all fear will always be safe" - L. tzu

That would be A Fish Out of Water. :) One of my faves as a kid. Though my fave Dr. Seuss for the longest time was Go Dog Go. My all-time-fave Seuss though is The Lorax.

Dunno. I just didn't care for the others as much as I enjoyed House. So if asked to give a list of the most memorable or favorite books from when I was a kid, I would name House but not the rest of the series because it just wasn't a fave to me (not to mention that only the first three were released when I was a kid...the rest were released in the early 90's, so). Though the 2nd and 3rd books were still pretty good. But they didn't hit me the same way House did.

thats probably part of it. by the time i was through my bellairs phase, i think he only put out 2 or 3 more books, so i had the majority to devour at my grade school library. also, in case you couldnt tell, i was being just a bit facetious. i dont take this very seriously. but werent all the covers good? :)

Encyclopedia Brown

Dr. Seuss

The Little Golden Books -  I remember when I would look forward to my dad brining me one of these home.  I think I was like five or seven at the time.  He would bring me one every day.

Mad -  I know that this isn't a book but I did read it a lot when I was a kid.  I still look at it from time to time when I am at a Super Market.  I remember it was hard parting from it when I began to discover that I was getting older and it just wasn't as funny anymore.  The same thing happened with my GI Joe toys and He Man, LOL.

Were Wolf Comics and Horror Comics - I know that these aren't books either but I did enjoy them.  I wasn't really into the Super Hero comics.  I liked the horror comics.  I also remember liking the dirty comics too.

Stephen King -  Most of the Stephen King stuff I read was when  I was a teenager or my early twenties.

Choose Your Own Adventure Books - I was addicted to these!

What Teenagers Want To Know -  I never had the birds and the bees talk with my dad, but he gave me this book.  I remember the book scared me though, because I thought I had VD for sure, even though I never slept with anyone.

Self Help Books - I read many of these when I was a teenager.

Writing Books - I read books about screenwriting when I was a teenager or novel writing.  I wanted to write a novel when I was 19.  I never did though, even though I am starting to write one now.  I have wrote scripts.  I stopped writing scripts for years and I have started doing that again as well.  I wrote one this year and I am working on two right now.

How To Be An Entrepreneur - I read a lot of these books as a teenager as well.  I tried when I was 13 but failed.  I read about MLM, Self Pubishing, Vending Machines etc..l

Anthony Robbins - I remember reading some of his stuff, but I think that was when I was older.

I am sure there are a lot more.

In 3rd grade I found my dad's copy of Everything You Wanted to Know About Sex But Were Afraid to Ask and read the whole thing, educated my friends about trannies, circle jerks, coprophilia etc.  Previously I was reading Sweet Valley High and The Babysitters Club,  Needless to say, I learned reading could be a lot more interesting, and I owe my passion for literature and love of language to these early discoveries of books I wasn't supposed to read, which carries on to this day.  (Says the girl with the Lit degree)

Then in 4th grade my grandma gave me a bunch of old books- mostly Harlequin romances, which I thought were hilarious, but it taught me about formula plot structures.  The Clan of the Cave Bear books by Jean Auel were in there, too. Loved those!

5th grade started my horror novel obsession, but I'd really read anything I could get my hands on.  Especially if it was sick and wrong.

I read a lot of Archie comics, too.

LOL For me it was Joy of Sex and The Kama Sutra. I think I was around eight. I'd have to corroborate timeframes with my cousin since it was at her house that we found these books. Angel, your reading history sounds very similar to my own. :) Only I couldn't stand the classes long enough to get a lit degree.

Lady Chatterly's Lollipop was an early fave.  I eschewed Nancy Jew & The Hardys, I was a loyal Three Investigators fan.  When I was about 8, I was in the local paper, with my mom & sister , reading  to them, in an article about young people ---READING!  One of my neighbors worked for the paper & he'd call me when they needed a news "model".  My fave spread was when I got to go to our local Treasure Island. Cheesey in retrospect, but at 10, it was crazy cool!!!

Oh my god, how could I forget the Three Investigators? I LOVED THEM. Srsly, those books are absolutely fantastic. I read every single one multiple times.

Sometimes I wish I'd had the foresight to retain all the books I ever had in my youth. Granted I'd have an massive collection at this point and no place to keep them, but still. There are so many books i know I enjoyed but can't recall. There was one my 5th grade teacher gave me to read because my reading level was too advanced for anything at the school, and it was brilliant, and it had Anne Boleyn in it and I remember the title had "Scarlet" in it...and that's all I remember. It was a YA fiction book and I loved it. And I could not tell you what it was for the life of me. Grrrr...

i remember discovering "DAli...Dali...Dali..." on my dad's night stand in early grade school. i was highly disturbed, yet kept sneaking peaks at it. that is my earliest memory of an expirience with reading or art that was for adults.

If you read the Sword of Truth series, stop after you've finished Book 4. IMO, it's not worth it to carry on after that point. The books just kind of degenerate into a big boring mess around #7. #4 is a good stopping point.

For some reason, I have a hard time investing my time in the doorstopper-sized fantasy books anymore. I have heard the Song of Ice and Fire series by George RR Martin is very adult and very good.

I think I had those Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark books - didn't they have really scary looking illustrations in black and white?  If so, I do remember them.

I also do remember Mad and Cracked magzines, Kevin6002.  Cracked even had a TP parody in an issue that is shown in WIP.

Way back, I remember Dr. Seuss, Cat in the Hat and Horton Hears a Who.  Then I remember mysteries, Phyllis Whitney, Agatha Christie, Alfred Hitchcock short stories.  In sixth grade I found The Hobbit, which led to Tolkein, which led to fantasy and sci-fi in general.  Stranger in a Strange Land made a big impression when I was 13 or so.
