Wow, just saw Religulous, Bill Maher's darkly humorous film (directed by Borat's Larry Charles) about his rejection of all world religions. Loved it, as I did Julia Sweeney's Letting Go of God. 2 fabulous movies by & for atheist freethinkers in one year?! Maybe there IS a god. Nah, just kidding. Didja know that many of the most important details in the Jesus legend are also parts of legends of "gods" from hundreds of years B.C. (Osiris, Mithra)? I DIDN'T!!!

Pansies smell delightful. And I think I'll have me a big steaming smug of hot chocolate to liberate my mind. Sticks & stones, old buddy. (& if "God" hates pansies, then why did he create them!? GOTCHA!!!)

I actually want to check out the Bill Maher movie. Although it seems to have flopped, just 3 million. Maybe they didn't open it in too many places. So I will have to wait. It didn't open here. I think Bill Maher is funny and makes some good points about things. Although I am sure it will be a one sided closed minded view point. I can tell that by one of the questions where he ask people about critical thinking as if that has anything to do with faith? My faith is in Christ not me. Which means that I can try out all religions and even athesism and still have faith in what Jesus did for me on the cross. But can you do that as an atheist? I guess I will have to see the movie and see the points he makes though.

| Great, Kev. Sure, he does go in with an agenda. That's the film's point of view, not an open-ended examination. He lets the interviewees talk & in the end, most hang themselves. In the long run, he's most opposed to judgemental extremists who could be the ultimate destroyers of society, not the rational let's all just get along type folk. By the by, what's your take on the whole Rapture thing? Don't know how the opening fared. Could be he's just preaching to the unconverted, which apparently is around 16% (around a third in Oregon).

I really don't care about the rapture. I am not one way or another on it. I know some people who seem to focus their whole life on it. But it is never someone from another country. It always seems to be Americans who say things like God loves us too much for us to go through that so He is going to rapture us away. You don't really hear someone in another country who can be killed for their faith and many who have talk about being "raptured away". But I am not into the AntiChrist teachings at all. Where the antichrist seems to change every day or year and is a different person depending on where you live. When I think of the rapture I think in terms of the rapture experiences that people have had. Where they are caught up in a vision or something supernatural happened. Like I don't see the book of revelation as a book revealing a war or a coming AntiChrist, but more of a seer book or a revelation of Jesus. A revelation of His Spirit. Yeah, I think religion can be very dangerous and I although I have not seen Bill Maher's movie, I think it is a healthy movie for society. I was only playing around when I said it would be closed minded and one sided. I know it will be one sided that is what makes Bill Maher funny. I think religion is dangerous when people seem to tag on that Jesus supports things like war and hatred toward homosexuals. Yes, the OT is full of wars and abuse and things that God did. It even says in one verse that God created evil. But you will not find where Jesus said that war would solve anything. Yet, that is what Christians claim to live by. I am not saying I don't support the American troops. I am just saying that I don't think war is a good long term solution to problems. And I don't think hating homosexuals or Harry Potter books is a good thing either, LOL. What people fail to realize is that the bible is not a truth book, or a moral book or a history book. It is not meant to be used that way. It is a spiritual and revelation book. It is meant to read you. To be read by the Spirit. That does not mean that it's meaning changes but that your revelation changes. It does not mean that you will not find morals to live by, you will but by revelation. The problem is when crazy people get a hold of it and use it in ways it is not suppose to be used. Like many people talk about Jesus's teachings, like you are in trouble. That He made it harder. No what He was teaching was that it was impossible to keep the law. And that they had the Spirit of the law wrong. The faith is not your faith, but faith in His faith. And what he bought was not the abilty for people to keep the 10 commandments, but for people to have access to God. And the same relationship he patterned as the Father and the Son, etc.. Long subject and this email is already long, LOL But I think how people know if they are getting out of the bible what they should is if it is read through love. If someone reads the bible and they feel worse or if they become mean and hateful, then they are not getting out of it what they should. The attitude should be one out of love, because love never fails the stories in the bible are meant to be stories of revelation to help a person on their journey. And when they are read by the Spirit people can see that. Another long subject... But yeah I think religion can be very dangerous, but I also think humanisim can be. Do I think religion should be in politics? It depends. I don't think religion should be forced on other people or should be used to control people. But if it is used in the way Jimmy Carter used it with the Habitat for humanity or how it is being used to get sex slaves out of sex slavery. I think those are positive things. I know I have prayed with and for people in governement both Democrate and Republican and it seemed to really encourage them. So, I think it is how you are using religion in politics that makes it a good or bad thing.

Bill Maher needs to be dropped in the Middle East to fend for himself. Good riddance.

And I "need" you to defend this out of left field assertion. I do believe that in this country we have freedom of speech. Question authority, question religion, & question individuals. So, you didn't care for the film? (or I'm betting you haven't actually seen it)

Bill Maher is not FOR anything. All he does is preach his propaganda of hatred towards religious institutions. His show on HBO is not about being FOR anything politically - all he does is use his airtime to bash the current Bush administration. He seems like a very bitter old liberal man who must have been raped as a child by a church member or something. Don't understand AT ALL where his hatred for religion comes from - if you don't wanna do it, then don't do it! He is a waste of space and sperm.

Although it did make me laugh, that's too easy, Booth. You are more creative than that.

He is a waste of space and sperm. | Haven't seen his current show, so I can't comment there. As for his religious background, he's more or less on the same page as me. He was forced to attend, hated it & was allowed to leave at age 14. He is FOR rational & loving thought & action. Of course he can't change the world in that if people want to base their lives around the superstitions guiding all religions, then they will. His biggest bone of contention is with extremists who may well ruin it for us all. Those calling for holy wars, Armaggedon, etc. The violent nutballs who want to actually realize the stupid prophesies in these questionable texts. Yes, Bill is liberal. Bitter? I don't see it. Just like you likely won't see the film, so you can actually discuss it. But a ticket to the film (go to a matinee, I dare ya!!!) is a lot less expensive than a copy of Beautiful Dark (AND none of the unattractive actresses from Sex in The City are in it!!!).

Actually it is all the systems that are corrupt. Not just religion. That is what we are seeing now the corruption of all the systems. The meaning to the book of Revelation is in the first line. It is the Revelation of Jesus Christ and not the revelation of the Antichrist.

I finally got around to seeing this movie and I laughed out loud at many parts. I did not find Bill Maher as mean as people said he was. But I do think this movie was made to push Bill Mahers own agenda as much as the religious people he was making fun of. Throughout the movie he says he does not know, but at the end it seems like he has the answer? But like I said I thought the movie was funny and Bill Maher did have some good points. Some of the problems I had with the movie are as follows: 1) It seems like they edited some scenes to make Bill Maher look smart and Christians to look dumb. I know some of the Christians he chose to interview were going to look dumb no matter what they said, but some of the scenes seemed to be edited. 2) He did not point out any of the good religion has done and maybe he does not think it has done any good. But I know when I was in New Orleans during the huricane that if it was not for the Christians a lot more people would have died. 3) He mentioned the founding fathers of America, but failed to mention Lincoln. Lincoln is considered to be one of the greatest presidents in history, and he was a man of faith. He also was a man with a very interesting testimony. 4) Bill Maher seemed to choose people that was not as good at debating as he is. He does this with his show as well.
