Matt Smith has been named as the actor who will take over from David Tennant in Doctor Who - making him the youngest actor to take on the role.

i'm really disappointed it's not someone older. this is probably exactly what it looks like: the further buffy/twilight-ing of the show, a young person to have romantic horseshit shoehorned in, etc. if that's where this is headed, then i guess i'll just have to accept that the show is not intended for me and stop watching

at least it makes it a lot easier to wait for the next series, i'm not looking forward to this...i'll certainly give it a whirl though.

Dont really know much about this Matt Smith, it'll be interesting to see how he gets on. The last 2 Dr Who's have been excellently cast in Chris Ecclestone and David Tennant. My moms more a Doctor Who fan than I am

Matt Smith as Dr Who stands or falls on his delivery of the line "what are you doing here?".

It took me a LONG time to accept Tennant as Who after Eccleston. I like Tennant as an actor and a personality, but I don't know that I've ever really liked him as the Doctor. I think I just compartmentalize that little piece of information and move on.

I have now seen two episodes from the fifth doctor era: The Five Doctors pt. 4, and Warriors of the Deep pt.1.
Could not really get into it, the cheap look is a big minus.

you picked some excruciatingly bad episodes

do me a favor booth, just treat yourself and netflix/pirate/do what you gotta and catch the entirety of Tomb of the Cybermen. frankly, the show peaked when it was black and white and has never really recovered

edit: did you just mean you can't get into 80s who or the show in general

The only Dr Who I'd seen before these episodes were The Ark in Space 1-4, which was all right, but the space monsters looked cheap and that just brings the whole thing down for me.

I don't think that Dr. Who is for me, but it's mostly for reasons such as "we've found an ancient temple, an ancient styrofoam temple", and the awful video look, that make it hard for me to suspend my disbelief, no matter how good the show may be.

Looking at the full spread of mugshots at WikiP it seems that the good Doctor(s) have been getting progressively younger as the shows have gone along.  Maybe it's a Time Lord thing.

I have now seen TotC, and it didn't win me over. The 25 minutes per episode must have been a serious blue-ball maker if one watched it back when it was first on.
I thought I heard some of the music from Horror of Party Beach in episode 2 when they had opened the hatch.

if that didn't do it for you, never give the show a chance again. it never gets one iota better than that. just a few follow-up questions however, did you enjoy the doctor who played the doctor at all? did you think it was interesting that "the borg" were 100% ripped off from a tv 20 years prior? is it just me, or were there INCREDIBLY subtle hints that the lead bad guy chick was sexually involved with toberman? what about it turned you off, exactly? if it had anything to do with the budget, were you aware the the budget for doctor who was literally less than star trek's catering budget?

in it's defense as far as the blue ball factor, i like to think of it as a direct decendant of old serials like flash gordon. it's supposed to make you crazy waiting for the next one.

I liked this doctor more than the other ones I've seen.
I know what the borg are but I'm not a star trek fan, so it never really crossed my mind.
It didn't turn me off, it just didn't turn me on. And yes I am aware of the budget. That's a problem with British television in general.

i find that for whatever reason the tiny budget and british accents enhance my suspension of desbelief enormously. go figure.

"the doctor who played the doctor" i'm just full of silly typos lately.

i like seeds of death, but that's kind of....not for casual or beginning fans. there's a lot of pointless running around, and even-worse-than-usual special effects. if you're going to ignore my adive about never trying to show again since you didn't like tomb of the cybermen, could i give you some decent alternatives?

spearhead from space, the aztecs, caves of androzani, and the curse of fendric are all great and availible on dvd
