Note: I pretty much hate The Exorcist . I find it unintentionally comic and I think those who say "well the scene with the vomiting girl was good, admit it" don't know what makes a film really good. Most films have at least one good scene. The Shining has, like, 90% of its scenes just the right way.

Most of the movies people put on scariest movie ever lists are overrated:
The Omen, The Shining, Rosemary's Baby, The Exorcist
all of these can be found of these list and I don't think any of them are scary.

Thanks for that info, Mr. Silencio.  I had no idea.  I admire Kubrick greatly--my husband and I rewatched Full Metal Jacket just a few nights ago.  I was appalled when I bought Eyes Wide Shut and discovered that dark black g-strings had been added to all the women in the sex magic scenes.  Give me a break!  How could that happen?  Are European versions unedited?

I came across a movie called Color me Kubrick, with John Malkovich playing Alan Conway, a real life conman who passed himself off as Stanley Kubrick for the last ten years of the director's life.  It is worth watching for Malkovich's hilarious performance.

this is a really good opinion

i don't think i've been scared by anything fictional but a lynch movie/TP since i was 7 or so. i mean, unless we're talking about "jump" scares, but those take zero skill

one of my favorite moments in TP is when cooper smashes his head against the mirror at the very end. it's both a "jump" scare and a culmination of the plot which freaked me out. very very good scary moment imo.

I am not from "The Shining is scary" camp per se because the most striking thing about the film is Kubrick's directorial style and that's it.

The last time I felt it was when I watched The Hourglass Sanatorium last year, but it wasn't a "oh, this scares me" type of thing, but something that got to the core of me and made me want to puke. It was a perfect moment, but unfortunately it didn't happen when I watched it again.

It is not scary in a classical way, that's for sure. For example, a lot said that for a horror movie The Shining is pretty much bright instead of dark. I first saw it when I was like 6 or 7 and I had nightmares, because of the disturbing atmosphere, the sense of isolation, and of course the blood-flood out of the elevator and the chopped up twins and so on...

Eyes wide shut - International release has the G strings on the women when they first appear. The point is that, as soon as Tom Cruise starts taking a tour of the castle, many people are boning and it's pretty much intense. I mean, you don't see genitalia going out and in. It's not pornography, but definitely R-rated stuff for the US system. That's why Kubrick himself had things and people added in the right points to cover the more explicit actions. If you want to do it for respect towards the movie, I suggest you to buy an import DVD if you have a region-free dvd player or you can go at Youporn.com and type 'eyes wide shut' and there you have the uncut scene. It looks like a fish out of water, if you ask me and the reason is pretty obvious :)

I think they should put a working age filter on Youporn! I mean, any underage kid can go there and click on "Yes, I am 18 or over". It's pretty sad to know that an 11-12 year old could go there and spoil himself.

I agree, actually it's among my personal favorites and certainly not just for the sexual content in it. It is about so much more. In addition to that, I read "Traumnovelle" the Schnitzler novel it is based on about ten times. I think the movie is, guess what, way better, but it's still a good psychological novel.

The masked ball chant from EWS is great. Very moody.

i own every kubrick soundtrack that's availible and i really enjoy the one from EWS, especially the chant. sometimes i wish that instead of making so few films, he'd just picked out the soundtrack for like 40-50 movies, the guy just has killer taste

This just sounded like something someone would say about Tarantino, which made me think of Clockwork Orange like a proto-Tarantino movie but with Beethoven instead of whatever pop culture reference he uses.

I am amazed that Kubrick himself had this scene edited.  I always assumed it was done after his death.  This movie is a favorite of mine, such a powerful depiction of what jealousy can do to a relationship, and the power of sexuality.  It may seem like a small thing, but those edits put a dent in the intensity of the mood surrounding what Cruise walks into.  Why did Kubrick feel the scene as is was o.k. for the theater, but not for home viewing?  It's a mystery to me.  It would definitely be out of respect for the movie that I would invest in an import DVD.

This was round the time he was palling around with Spielberg, so be glad there are no walkie talkies in the scene.

I have always been a fan of the old "in-out".

From what I read, also the theatrical version that was shown in American screenings has the censoring figures. I don't know what to say, frankly, because here in Italy it's very different. Every movie that comes out, even the most sex and violence-riped gets to be seen by everyone and usually when a movie is prohibited they just use the under 14 policy (very rarely you can find a movie that is for people over 18). This is majorly because of commercial reasons.

I've seen THE SHINING a million of times... Until the DVD came out I saw it with that horrible (and Kubrick approved!) spanish dubbing, easily one of the worst out there, later enjoyed the original version (I love Nicholson imitating Duvall "As soon as possible!") and only once saw the US cut...

The thing is I disliked the "added" scenes, looked like deleted and unnecessary stuff to me, but that's because we love what we are accostumated to, that's why even if I admit the new APOCALYPSE NOW REDUX scenes are good, I totally hate them because the film I saw and loved didn't have them and didn't need them... The same goes for FWWM and that Super Extended edition many fans have wet dreams about...

Well, I've never seen the US cut, so I immediately ordered an import R1 DVD. I am really looking forward to watch it, especially the scene of Danny being visited at the beginning and then Shelley Duvall speaking to the doctor, venting about her ex-alcoholist hubby Jack who dislocated Danny's arm once. But generally speaking, I just read in that site there are a lot of scenes cut in the International release and put all together, they are like  almost a half-hour added to it. It's definitely a must-see.

I love the scene in The Shining where Jack exuberantly hands Scatman Crothers a four-foot meatball sub and gets tomato sauce all over his jacket.

Yeah, that's pretty intense! And it is useful to him also to find out where Danny is, because Danny knows what just happened with Halloran and screams from the kitchen AAAAAHHHHH!
