What do you do in your free time to get away from or relieve the stresses of life? How do you relax or get rid of stress or tension after work, school, or just life's dramas? (this is a serious question so ignore the Booth and 'Fud replies)

I actually have been going to the gym and that seems to help. Trust me, my life has a lot of stresses right now so I am always looking for something to eleviate it...rather than getting totally sauced.

I either write or I play WoW. And if I'm really feeling like I need to work out a ton of stress and frustration aimed at other people, I'll load up Sims, create a family of those who are the target of my ire, and throw them into a gimped house so I can watch them fail miserably and laugh at their demises. Issues. I haz them.

ironically, i was getting too stressed by my raid schedule and stopped playing. we killed sapherion (or however you spell it, that big silly bone dragon in naxx) and something just snapped in my head, i realized how little fun i was having. i have a balance druid who's covered head to toe in epic naxx gear, and that's very nice, but not having a raid schedule is SO much nicer

Right now, my life is nothing but stress. Everywhere I go, there's a stressor. So, how I cope is sit on the couch in the dark, rock back and forth, and cry. I so need to be put a way. LOL

I just do the ' things could be worse' bit. How serious is this particular stressor? Really, is it that serious and unresolvable?
I think of how tough some people have it and what a serious stressor could be. Oh yeah, a trip to the gym to increase endorphin levels. Carp about the stressor to a captive friend for sympathy. I keep that to a minimum so the person will still be there in the future.

besides just being a dumb network tv zombie? I'll sometimes lose myself in an old-school roguelike ascii game, or something like civilization. My new thing this year is going to be guitar. I had a crappy old acoustic but just never got very good. At an after xmas sale I picked up a relatively cheap electric guitar/amp kit. It's pretty fun.

I'll say drugs Richard, and lots of them, but only after you give me some of that saucy Brit tongue of yours. But seriously... Studying the tao has helped me quite a bit over the last eight years or so.

I just didn't know if anyone had a daily routine of exercise or form of meditation they would like to share.

I'm trying something new; When I'm angry about something and it just won't go away (happens all too often given the state of my sad species and my Scandinavian heritage) I make a fist, bunching my hand as hard as I can and focusing on the object of my anger. I hold it for 30 seconds or so and then open my hand and let go of said object, or try to. Preliminary results have been good, We'll see how it does long term.

that sounds like a really good one. i try to take deep breaths, and as i exhale i picture thick dark cloud of nasty dark purple smoke, which is all the troubles i have, exiting my body. sometimes it even works

Yeah, that's why I don't raid. I'll step in if one of my guild's raid teams needs a body, but for the most part I just like wandering and doing my own thing. Having a raid schedule pissed me off in pre-BC; I cut my raiding in half with BC, and by the time Wrath arrived, I decided I was done with being a regular raider. I've always enjoyed the game more for the exploration and quest storyline aspect anyway. Having to be someplace three nights a week so we can farm MC, BT, Naxx...fuck that noise.
Mentioning meditation and the like...a number of years ago, Fud gave me a book called "Being Nobody, Going Nowhere: Meditations on the Buddhist Path". Just reading that book was a big stress reliever, and following a lot of the teachings and thoughts in it helped me find my way back from a pretty serious depression I was in at the time. Highly recommend.

i've re-read that one a few times, and you'd be surprised how many people see the title and go "ugh, how depressing" and it's pretty hard not to laugh the only thing about raiding is that i really enjoy knowing that my little dude is all decked out in purple gear. thankfully, i'm just one trinket slot away from that.

Yeah, I have to admit that the title did put me off from reading it for a little while. Glad I did though. I'm sitting here right now, listening to my guild doing a Naxx 25-man over Vent and laughing my ass off. Bunch of barely-hit-80-yesterday noobs in the run and everyone is pissed. Definitely NOT a stress reliever. Laughing at their pain, however, is. :D

| QUOTE:I just didn't know if anyone had a daily routine of exercise or form of meditation they would like to share. | I've been doing Tai Chi at least once a day for close to 30 years now. Ditto "sitting", at least half an hour of sitting, eyes closed, watching the breath, listening, watching thoughts come and go. With any luck more going than coming...I truly don't know how I could have maneuvered through my life without those balancers. I am hugely thankful that at this point in my life there is very little stress, or maybe all those years of practice have truly helped me react to stressors differently. But if I do find myself overtaken, I head for the hammock, stare into the woods, and listen to the birds, windchimes, tree frogs. That takes care of it pretty quickly.
