This is for those who are interested or who have never tried it.  Meditation has done wonders for my life through inner healing and peace etc...  The type of meditation I practice is Christ centered.  I know there are other forms out there, but I don't really know about those.  I know some things seem to over lap with different religions etc...  Here are some basic things to get started.  One thing that worked for me is what I call soaking prayer.  You play some soft gentle music.  Something you feel energy on or a good vibe and just relax.  Don't pray for anyone, just wait.  Another thing I did was speak in tongues and I still do this.  Just speak in tongues and things will happen.  If you have never spoke in tongues then ask God for the gift of tongues.

Here are some basic steps I have done and also Saints from the past to help you enter in.  Don't feel like you have to do some kind of rules, but this has worked for many people when starting out.

1) Recollection - This is the first stage and this is where most people stay.  It is when you pray for others or pray about things in your life.  The burden seems to be removed and you feel better about yourself and then go about your day or if at night go to bed.

2) Meditation (Prayer Of Quiet) - It is in this stage that the distractions are removed and you feel God.  It is in this stage that a bible verse or a chant or saying becomes real to you and seems to bring you closer to God.  You also may begin to go into visions or prophecy in this stage or your imagination becomes divine.  You are seeing this but you know that it isn't just regular day dreaming.

3) The Prayer Of Union - It is at this stage that you become so overwhelmed by the love of God and so connected that you don't know where you end and God begins.  You go beyond visions and visions doesn't seem to be that important only union is.

4) The Prayer Of Ecstasy - It is at this stage that you feel a joy and happiness that words can't desribe.

I got this simple stages from the book The Ecastasy Of Loving God.  But if you read writings from people from the past they say basically the same thing.  Also this is just to begin with.  As you enter in you will find that you can skip 1-3 and enter right into 4.
