I heard this on the radio this morning and I couldn't help but laugh....

From Salon.com

"...Many of Obama's initiatives in his first few days in office -- preparing to depart Iraq, ending torture and closing Guantánamo -- were aimed at signaling a sharp turn away from Bush administration policies. In contrast, the headline about the strike in Waziristan could as easily have appeared in December with "President Bush" substituted for "President Obama." Pundits are already worrying that Obama may be falling into the Lyndon Johnson Vietnam trap, of escalating a predecessor's halfhearted war into a major quagmire. What does Obama's first military operation tell us about his administration's priorities?"

Lest we forget, pundits were calling Iraq a failure and a quagmire within 24 hours of the start of the war (remember the dust storms?). And for the next few years, all we heard was that Iraq was "Bush's Vietnam" from the left (and they were wrong). And here we are, less than 7 days into Obama's presidency and we have Obama's Vietnam now.

i support obama because i think he'll do a lot of good domestically, but hell if i know how he's going to find an equitable way out of iraq. and even if he does is he just going to pour all those troops into afghanistan like he's been saying? can't say i'm in favor of that... i expect to be really disappointed with however the two wars wrap up, not to mention any wars he starts (pakistan?)

when i heard that a drone hit in Pakistan last week, I thought the same thing. I know every time Bush did it, there was a huge uproar. Obama made a comment back in the campaign that suggested he was willing to go across the border without approval if it meant capturing/killing Bin Laden. Of course, military officials have said that things aren't going well in Afghanistan so it's probably smart to move troops there

yeah, i'm not too sure how he is going to handle that tight rope. ain't gonna be easy. He's gonna find that campaigning is easier than governing. LOL!

One night Obama is sitting all alone in the oval office, tears streaming down his cheeks, singing in falsetto:
nobody said it was easy
no one ever said it would be so hard
oh take me back to the start

yeah, i don't buy in to the "omg he has no experience!" hysteria, but it's an objective fact that this is his first executive position. i certainly think he'll grow into it fast (certainly, a person who can put together a national campaign like that on his first go-round is a VERY swift and intelligent person), but i really wonder if blanket statements like, "we're going to invade a third country to get bin laden" are the best idea. not to mention that frankly, at this stage of the game, getting bin laden is a bit like trying to round up the animals after the barn doors have been open.....for 7+years. capturing him isn't going to bring anyone back or heal any wounds. i'm all for defeating al-qaeda, but wrangling (or god forbid martyring) one old looney isn't going to magically end all our troubles, and we shouldn't treat it like a brass ring that's worth risking a lot of lives for.

Here's hoping that drone was just a 'muscle flex'.  I think there's a benefit to Obama to let the world know he's not going to wet himself at the prospect of military action.  That said, Pakistan is so unstable that more incursions have a real risk of either turning the gov't against the US or resulting in an overthrow.  We've probably all seen the 20/20 style reports that go into detail about how the Taliban is in bed with Pakistani intelligence.  Unfortunately it means we can't really count on any proactive support from Pakistan.  It's not clear to me that just paying off people in Pakistan will work as well as it did in Iraq...

About Afghanistan- my impression is that it is so unstable now that somebody needs to go in there.  It may need to be a fairly length rebuilding process, like Iraq.  I think there are probably goals short of completely ridding the mountains of extremists that are worth increasing troop numbers for.  Will we ever get Bin Laden?  Who knows.  I'm sure Obama  realizes that capturing/killing him is not the ultimate  goal for the region

True 'nough, although we are already there.  Is this a Concord fallacy?  maybe...

Nefud has a poster of Ann Coulter on his bedroom ceiling.

"Harry, I'm going to let you in on a little secret. Every day, once a day, give yourself a present. Don't plan it, don't wait for it, just let it happen. Could be a new shirt at the men's store, a catnap in your office chair, or two cups of good, hot, black coffee. Like this."  -Dale Cooper
