For the record, I think the only part I skipped was most of Hollis Mason's treatise on owls.

Turns out they're not what they seem. They're a lot more dull.

Maybe Joaquin can do a rap version of Watchmen.

Joaquin could call himself The Daywatchman and team up with Tom Morello (The Nightwatchman), and do covers of these songs: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c7Sqt-sI2wM

OK, I googled Watchmen.  Now I follow.  I was confusing it with The Watchtower.  (Yeah, I'm serious)

Tru dat.  I liken Joaquin to a lyrical gangsta.

This was either pretty funny or pretty cruel, I guess, depending on whether the actor, Phoenix, was actually acting about rapping or seriously bonkers.

Hey, REBEL! Just a little trivia for ya...in the late 80's, I was living in Gainesville, FL.  My husband at the time sold homemade sourdough bread and seitan (a kind of meat substitute made from wheat gluten.)  Heart (that's the name their mom went by) would come by the house to pick up her orders.  They always bought lots of seitan around Thanksgiving!  Back then, Joaquin was calling himself Leaf.  Another musician friend of mine was putting together the lineup for music at an arts festival, and gave River's band their first chance to play out. Years later, (in 1992) I was with this friend picking up his son at a counseling appointment, and River was there.  He came over to the car to say hi, and I remember thinking something was wrong---he just wasn't all there.  A year later, he was gone.

Ok, I finally watched the Letterman clip.

His voice is trembling like he's on a lot of speed and can't unclench his jaw, will barely raise his head. Can't or won't communicate Dave is like, oh, crap. Another one (in the tradition of Farrah, Crispin, Richard Simmons, Sam Philip etc.) Dave is NOT amused.

Joaquin is almost aggressive. Definitely rude. And Dave won't play.

But I noticed he removed his shades when they cued the audience to applaud, and gave a very warm handshake then said something in confidence to Dave (probably something along the lines of: I'm sorry, I have to do this. Publicity, you know?)

I don't think it was all that daring. It's been done. He just looks like a dumbass, not an eccentric superstar on too many drugs.

But the talk show shtick is tired, and I think if a star is contractually obligated to just be a warm body and say what's expected, why not be as asshole? Maybe that will put this kinds of mind-numbing entertainment to rest, and Letterman can throw in the towel already.

I hadn't realized that Joaquin Phoenix did the Independent Spirits Award show the night before his Oscar appearance.
