I'm told the crack problem is pretty out of control in the bigger cities. Drugs come straight up from Mexico and the gangbangers (I guess, another part of the problem) sell them.

I hitched through Dallas and watched a drug deal at a gas station in the suburbs. Made Denver look like Baltimore.

i can understand that. i think what i look for most in a place is natural beauty, which i tend to define as trees, hills, and water. understandably then i tend to prefer east texas and think of the west half as somewhat nightmarish

QUOTE:I think Booth was making a joke in poor taste about the continuing racism problem in the south. No lynchings in Austin that I've ever heard of ;)
It wasn't really a joke, that's just where my mind went first. And it was based purely on history, nothing current.
Had it been about a bunch of Lynch fans called the Lynch mob in Alabama, my reaction would probably be the same.

There is nothing wrong with West Texas.  Nefud is just a treehugging, hackey sack playing hippie townie.

"Harry, I'm going to let you in on a little secret. Every day, once a day, give yourself a present. Don't plan it, don't wait for it, just let it happen. Could be a new shirt at the men's store, a catnap in your office chair, or two cups of good, hot, black coffee. Like this."  -Dale Cooper

it wasn't really a picnic living in west texas* given my political views, but the people are warm, friendly, and incredibly hilarious. but there's a reason west texas produces some of the finest american musical minds (roy orbison, stevie ray vaughn, buddy holly, waylon jennings and willie nelson and i'm sure i'm forgetting others) there is just plain nothing to do, ever. i'm pretty sure that racism and homophobia would die out there in a generation if someone would build a decent dance club or something, they probably just hate because it's better than going cow tipping AGAIN. and like i said above there's just a complete lack of the type of natural beauty i tend to appreciate. if you like wide open spaces, dust storms, flash floods, and dirt so red you'll think you've gotten your ass to mars i can't recommend it enough.

Texas, the state (not the country) gets picked on plenty but I think part of the problem is their sense of being apart from the rest of the nation kinda like the sense of superiority San Franciscans feel within the state of California.  "We're special."

So, of course, others react.

When I've traveled to Texas, I've always had a really good time.  Enjoyed the people.  Loved the food.  Marveled at the wide open spaces.  Okay, but I'll also admit that I've had some very paranoid feelings about Dallas but it's just that... I've never quite gotten over the debacle of the JFK assassination there.  It is a city that just feels so wrong on so many levels.  It's a place I always want to be leaving rather than arriving even though I know some fantastic people in Dallas.  (and wonder how they can live there...)

On my first trip to Texas I remember thinking how odd it was that within the course of a day there were these constant reminders -- either on television or radio or in the form of a billboard or bumpersticker -- that "If you aren't from Texas, you're nothing."  I'm pretty sure that's the actual bumpersticker though it might read "ain't" instead of "aren't."

That geocentric attitude could be a part of the reaction against the Big T.

No, I don't get nervous meeting TP fans either.  Over the years I've found TP fans to be some of the brightest, most genial, engaging, and accepting people you'd ever encounter.

I remember driving accross Texas coming from New Orleans to Juarez. It took us two days !! The scenery really changed in about the middle of the state and i thought the sunset in West Texas was kinda beautiful- all red and orange and stuff-the wide open spaces. I knew I was indeed in the West. I don't know what living in west Texas is like.
