Gotta admit I'm not a huge fan of the new song, but for me a mediocre U2 CD is still probably worth getting.

Same here. I've already taken to turning off the radio anytime their new single comes on. However, I'm willing to give the rest of the disc a change when it drops. I mean, I hated "Vertigo" when it came out, but that CD ended up being not so bad. Definitely not fantastic, but listenable in the background (plus it gave rise to a song that was my mantra for a long while, "Somes You Can't Make It On Your Own").

I'm a terrible person for saying U2 hasn't been relevant since The Joshua Tree

I actually like the second side Joshua Tree better than the first, but whatever...

I put U2 in my "faithful old dog" category- sure they've lost some of the edge and passion, but I'd still rather listen to new stuff from them than most of the crap that passes for music these days.  Also in this category for me: Chili Peppers, Bob Dylan...

My god, is this the attitude of every poster on this site?
Edit: It sounds a bit more confrontational than it's supposed to.

i mostly listen to old music because the shit gets forgotten and the cream rises and every time i try someone i've heard of it's like stumbling into a goldmine of awesome music. "who's this lou reed guy, i guess i'll listen to transformer first and OH MY GOD THIS IS AWESOME" or "zappa, i think i heard him on dr. demento when i was a kid, apostraphe looks great HOLY SHIT MUSIC SO GOOD I CANT STOP COMING OH MAN I'M COMING BLOOD NOW BUT ITS PRETTY WORTH IT"

top 40 can't really compare to that. but i like a few people that are more current, like beck, hank williams the third, and brandi carlisle

I like listening to music that is popular for about 3 months and the song is played on the radio every other song during this period.  I love trends.

The difference being that you think it's good music, not "this music is bad but that music is even worse, so I'll listen to this bad music instead of spending time with the good stuff".

I never said they were bad.  I don't need my music to every second of the day be super emotionally charged best songs that ever were.  I enjoy well-crafted songs made by great musicians.  This is especially true if I've got music on while I'm working.

it's completely possible for music to be too good to have on while working. origin of love from hedwig? skip. questions in a world of blue? skip. heart attack and vine? now we're talking. :)

No I know, my first post was about that it seemed quite similar to the attitude people have expressed about bad Twin Peaks, or bad Simpsons.

Ignore Booth, bio.  He is Snob Snobby Dogg when it comes to everything.  Don't let him urinate in your cornflakes.

A national holiday will be declared the day you make a non-sarcastic post.

Booth, I personally think you have great taste - I was just pointing out that you seem to not like what other people like ALL of the time, not just some of the time.  *bats eyelashes at Booth*

well there's clearly a sliding scale for some things. i really didn't care for season 3 of battlestar galactica, so much so that i stopped watching, but i could recognize that it was still better written, acted, and scored than almost everything else on television (which i also wasn't watching)

I have a mancrush on Edward James Olmos's acting skills.

he's really obscenely good in that show, there's no question. there's a look he gets on his face of sheer heartbreaking frustration, like just before he launches vipers against the battlestar pegasus to try to get his soldiers back, and both times it's happened i just...no words. something like a mix of "shock" and "choke up"

That there is key.
Being better than almost everything else on television is not that high praise and there's no real reason to watch substandard fictions.
