So I'm watching CNN and they say the Dow is down to the point it was at in 1997. I saw the number and reminded me of my senior year in high school in 1999. I had to do a stock project and I remember the dow being around 9,000. So if you invested money a decade ago you could possibly be in the hole. I found this both shocking and funny at the same time since I don't invest in stocks. So when are stock brokers going to start having nervous break downs and people mobbing bankers? You know like the late 20's-30's.

For starters you need to switch from CNN to Fox News.

Life is a circle.  Our country will rebound, but it may be a long time.

and of course, that's why people tell you to mix up your stocks into different things. If you solely bet on the Dow index, then yes, you MIGHT be screwed. But people don't do that. You invest in stocks that may or may not be in that index that could be going up. For example, Netflix has had a pretty good run over the past few months while many others have gone crashing down.

I bought my first individual stocks today (have had a 401K for years). One was Netflix and the other Sirius (which may be a bad move in the coming months but I'm hoping not). So far, I have made 1.94 today off of an investment of $42! WHOO! I just regret not getting NFLX back in Nov/Dec when it was under $20.

Of course it's going to turn around...if not, we'll all implode when it hits zero*. And it won't matter then.

I like MSNBC personally the best because of straightshooters Keith Olbermannnnnn and Rachel Maddow.

I thought Fox News was Faux News?

ALL TV news is. ABC and CBS just like to whine more about how biased FOX is, while totally not owning up to their own biases.

Turn off the TV. Ignore the spin. Think for yourself.

well there we go. like i said, it's just a li'l bit, they just expect you to suspend disbelief long enough to accept that this is actually a lead news story even on the slowest of newsdays.

in case some of the more conservative folks have trouble seeing what's wrong with this, pretend it's an MSNBC headline stating "keith olberman makes devestating quip, energizing the country's democrats"

Erm, why did you insert "devastating?"

CNN was just saying Rush "fires up" "his crowd" (ie. preaching to the choir, not the country's conservatives). You could easily have just replaced Rush's name with Keith's, and gotten the same point across.

It's not news when someone preaches to the choir, but if they'd said "rallying the country," that'd be another thing.

The funny thing about journalism is that a person who knows they're biased one way will overcompensate and come across the OTHER way in their attempt to be objective. It happens a lot.

OR a publication will patronize the opposition by singling out a radical, so their readership can collectively cluck their tongues at the enemy, and still appear objective.

For example, I don't know any conservatives who like Rush. Choosing him as their Conservative of The Day does not reflect well/accurately on most of the Right, and CNN knows this.

because keith "makes jokes" to excite his crowd and rush "fires up" conservatives

the article doesn't paint him in a negative light, so i dont think they're using him as some sort of strawman.

if my analogy was wrong my original point stands, how in the world is this a lead story? paul harvey died, minnesota has a senator still up in the air, and that's just the US off the top of my head!

(as a journalism minor you can't be advocating "well *I* don't know anyone who...." as a valid point, right? )

how does posting Rush as the lead story on a slow weekend equal CNN being right wing?

it wasn't a slow weekend!

this is the kind of thing that gets reported in other countries while the US is bogged down with bullshit headlines like the one above. giving limbaugh center state while ACTUAL EVENTS are occurring elsewhere makes them hideously incompetant and yes, just a little right-leaning.

So since Rush isn't headlining FNC's website - does that mean FNC is NOT right wing? That would be the full-extension of your argument. It holds no water. Rush is the second main story, followed by Iraq and a story about Marine One's security breach (major story there, IMO - CNN doesn't have that story, but MSNBC does - wonder what THAT means?).

Oh, let me rephrase then - "a slow US news story weekend."

It's okay though - CNN just changed their main story now about Blue collar guys going to green jobs! Now there's an important story!

and in reality, if you want to match up CNN's main page with Guardians (rather than just the screenshots you took which don't take into account the entire page), then the main story is the one with the image. And right now as I post this, the main image on the Guardian is about sports with "other" news items around it - just like on CNN which has a variety of news stories, including Paul Harvey, Sebuilius, and a number of world stories too.

So if you want to be real honest with these comparisons - Guardian's main story is football (not America's version) and CNN's main was Rush. The Guardian knows their audience and knows what they want!

In all seriousness - the weekend news is ABOUT soft news. It's rarely about hard news unless something major really happens (and nothing major has happened this weekend).

So looking at news websites on a weekend as proof of something is far from accurate.
