Not sure if anyone noticed, but today Depeche Mode released their first single off their upcoming album Sounds of the Universe. The single is called "Wrong" and it is only available at iTunes right now. Of course I bought it, along with the bonus remixed track of "Oh Well", which I LOVE.

Here's a direct link to it:

Depeche Mode

Here's also a link to their myspace page

Now, you know me and my Mode. I will fellate anything they put in my mouth, more or less. However...I'm kind of lukewarm on this new single right now. I'm sure I just need to listen to it a few more times to get into the groove. It's definitely a bit different from the tone of Playing the Angel...but it's still definitely DM. :) Interested to hear what others think...

I kinda like it. I'm not a super-huge fan of Depeche Mode, but i do have a fondness for them. This song has had a little bit of air-play over here, and it's growing on me the more i hear it. Hopefully the album will be a good'un.

What kick-started me into going and checking out more DM was Gore's cover of Julee Cruise's "In My Other World". It's minimalist for sure, but i bloody love it.

Here's a live youtube vid of the new song: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L2GaCnAiuvo

It's not bad, but I'm a bit worried that this is the first single from the album. DM album tracks are usually great though, and Playing the Angel has really grown on me, so I hope they keep on progresing.

Depeche Mode sucks

Yeah, that's my concern too. Usually you pick your strongest (commercial) hitter as your lead-off single, or at the very least, the single you think really drives home the rest of your album. In the past the lead-off single from each of DM's albums has really grabbed me. This is the first time that I've been so meh about it. But it's DM and I will always love their music no matter what. And shit, if Exciter and Ultra can grow on me, then so can anything else they do. :)

I know. That's why my response was so gentle and flippant.

And giospurs, thank you for that link! After watching it a couple of times, it's made me appreciate the song a whole lot more! (plus I got to get my fangirl on over Dave Gahan, so. Always a bonus)

It reminds me a bit of the weaker tracks off Exciter, only with shouting.

If that's the best they could do for a single, the band may have run out of steam...

Dave still looks damn good, however. Cute moves.

I know, doesn't he?

OK, I'm glad I'm not the only person who thought the song sounded very Exciter-ish.

I think the shouting of "Wrong!" over and over is what is bothering me. Seeing them perform it makes it not feel so weird, but when I go back and listen to just the song, it bugs me. I think this is going to be an ongoing love-hate struggle. I still have high hopes for the album itself. The short vids DM kept releasing over the last few months detailing the making of the album had snippets of music that sounded really good...so I'm banking on that.

Unlike Morrissey. I like his new song better, though!

Poor Morrissey. He just gets puffier every year...

Here's the official music video for "Wrong", btw...

Yay! Happy Sounds of the Universe release day! :) Technically it's not out for another hour and half in my time zone and my box set won't arrive until I'm already at work in the morning, but iTunes already pushed the digital copy down to my desktop like two hours ago, so I've taken to molesting it rather than studying for my watershed ecology exam tomorrow. Enjoying this new album immensely so far. Reminds me of their old stuff (think Music For the Masses, Black Celebration, that era) but with some of the things they've discovered about their musical style over the years. One of my friends said it was the best album they've released since Violator, which is what many critics said when Playing the Angel came out in 2005. I'm reserving that kind of judgment for later when I've listened to the album a few dozen more times. :D

I'm not too impressed with the new album. It's okay, but sounds like they're on cruise a little bit. I don't think it's as good as Playing the Angel. I've got about 12 DM albums, and after one listen, I'd say this is the worst. I still think it's a good album though! And maybe it just needs more listens.

Eat shit, j.

I'm still reserving my full opinion until I can give it another couple of listens. I had the same reaction when Songs of Faith and Devotion came out, and I didn't give it a real chance until ten years later. I shall not make that same mistake twice.
