Yes, I think you are right.  It seems like most of the gene therapy stuff they are doing involves removing the stuff from your body (bone marrow, white blood cells, etc), fixing the gene, then sticking it back in.  so doing this to your dick would probably not be a good idea...

and from what i understand, most of that somatic therapy is through the use of ADULT stem cells - not embryonic stem cells which haven't had much success compared to adult.

I think they've knocked off some "easy ones" with the adult stem cells, and I don't think people are going to stop researching adult stem cells.  Most (all?) of the attempts to convert adult cells back into embryonic stem cells have not worked, and most people in the field seem convinced that embryonic cells are the way to go.

I wouldn't necessarily say they were "easy ones."  a variety of cancers, diabetes, MS, arthritis have all been treated with adult stem cells, including a variety of blood conditions. "Easy?"

Here's a 2 year old article from the NY Times with an itnerview with one of the guys who discovered stem cells.

I wrote "easy"  in quotes- I intended to convey that these were not of trivial difficulty, just easier than the diseases which have not been solved yet.  Sorry for the confusion.

BTW - i know no one will stop researching adult stem cells. Right now, they are showing more promise than embryonic. Which makes me wonder if the federal funding/ban is not focused properly.

i think it was important to lift the ban on embryonic, but i totally agree that funding should be focused on whatever will do the most good
