As a female bass player myself, I have to give nods to Tina Weymouth (Talking Heads) and Johnette Napolitano (Concrete Blonde) as huge inspirations to me. But I agree with Nefud, John Entwistle was a bass playing monster. The best.

Hi, Rigpa, nice to know you are a fellow Bass Player. I are one two! Well, I have to agree about Johnette. She not only hammers home the lows, but sings like Janis Joplin in an attitude way. I have seen them live twice (including just a few years ago in Hollywood), and she delivers! I also concur about Entwhistle - the Tree. He redefined how the instrument fit in a rock band. Forget thee not Les Claypool, another innovator, Paul McCartney, for his fluid, melodic lines, and that guy from BlueBOB for his flat, lifeless thumping in the cellar!

Yeah, I forgot to mention Les as well, thanx. Maybe Billy Sheehan as well.

Hi, John! Thanks for the greeting! Yes, I just love Johnette's voice...so refreshing to hear a woman punch it out from deep down. And you are right, we can't forget Paul McCartney. Another we can't forget (but somehow I did) is Jack Casady. And JVSCant reminded me of Tony Levin. How did I forget him?! I listened to King Crimson's *Discipline* over and over and over...that Stick is an incredible instrument.

Speaking of female bassists, check out Jeff Beck's latest Live at Ronnie Scott's (he did a weeklong gig at the legendary 250 seat Jazz club) & the phenomenal pint-sized cutie Tal Wilkenfeld. You can get the CD or a much longer DVD set, with guest shots from Joss Stone, Imogen Heap & Eric Clapton (Beck replaced him in the Yardbirds, but they never played together). J.B. is a guitar god to me & his band is aces, especially the curly-headed pixie, whose tiny fingers fly all over her Gibson 4-string. Check 'em out on YouTube from the Crossroads Fest...
