"Harry, I'm going to let you in on a little secret. Every day, once a day, give yourself a present. Don't plan it, don't wait for it, just let it happen. Could be a new shirt at the men's store, a catnap in your office chair, or two cups of good, hot, black coffee. Like this."  -Dale Cooper

Amanda, this TNG episode is one of the most unintentionally hilarious episodes ever.

I love TNG, but the 2 eps mentioned help make one of the worst seasons of Trek ever.

Any ep with beardless Riker and Troi wearing a cheerleading outfit- run!  Run for your lives!

Most days I take the Tasha Yar approach to managing the embarassment that is season 1..."It never happened!" (Oh dear Tasha, but I'm afraid it did. And now your cervix is filled with gear oil...tsk)

Ha ha !  The giant oil slick monster!

Also - Worf's head looked really weird

         Picard had hair

Tasha Yar blew as did Season 2 Dr. Pulaski

seasons 1 and 2 of tng are my favorite

it's basically TOS part 2, sillyness included

everything after that was a lot more steady in quality, but unfortunately kind of bland as well

Amanda, do you own every Trek series and film on DVD?  If so, I am jealous as hell.

1. Twin Peaks

2. The Andy Griffith Show

3. Little House On The Praire

4. The Incredible Hulk

5.Columbo

I didn't include talk shows.  Some other shows I really liked were Family Ties, Married With Children and Werewolf.  Although werewolf only lasted one season.

At the time, I had no problem with Season 1. Going back now though, I'm embarrassed by some of the storylines ("Angel One", for example) and the fact that the music in every ep seems to have been produced from a $20 Radio Shack synthesizer. However, I accept the series as a whole, and so I will still watch every episode of season 1 (who can honestly resist "Hide and Q"?). I don't know that I could choose a fave season. Each season has some groovy stuff but also some crap stuff. For example, season 5 contains two of the best TNG eps..."Darmok" and "The Inner Light." But it also contains one of the worst, "Cost of Living." I only need three words to explain why I say that...Dustin. Motherfucking. Diamond.

j, if by "own" you mean have in my possession all the eps and films? Then yes. If you mean did I pay for all of them? Hell no. At the time that TNG and DS9 were released on disc, I refused to pay the exorbitant asking prices ($125-150 a pop anyone?). Those I cribbed from a generous friend who was easy to ply with a spindle of blank DVDs and a homemade steak dinner. I'm finally going back and collecting them season by season, but I find myself constantly derailed by awesome stuff I don't already have (all of SG1, for example).

I'm not even close to having them all.  The prices in the past were insane and even now they are still around 70 a pop in the store or 55 online.  There are so freakin' many of them.  It's really frustrating.  I think it's going to be a several year process for me to invest in getting all of these mf's.

I can't put them in order, and it kills me to cut it down to five.

TWIN PEAKS. Everything I love in one series.

SHOOTING STARS. It's not a quiz show, it's a life choice.

THE YOUNG ONES. What students really do.

ROBIN HOOD. The new BBC one. It's terrible. I don't care.

THE MARY WHITEHOUSE EXPERIENCE. I grew up a very sarcastic child.

And then there is Monty Python, Father Ted, Red Dwarf, I Claudius, The Mighty Boosh, The Office (THE ENGLISH ONE), The Crystal Maze, Dr Who, South Park and I really better stop now or it will be a top 20.

i think the thing to remember is that a lot of the time, even episodes you remember as being pretty decent have about twice as much pointless jibber jabber or god forbid moralizing than you remember. fuck, even stuff that should be pretty awesome like "reunification" isn't that good when you actually sit down and watch it.

then there's just mindless filler shit, TONS of it. here's some samplings from wiki's tng page:

The Enterprise is without power, trapping Picard in a turbolift with three children. Command of the Enterprise falls to Counselor Troi.

Worf tries to be a father to his son Alexander, while the Enterprise witnesses a new propulsion technology.

The Enterprise helps a far-flung eugenic human colony avoid destruction, but upset its delicate balance by ending 200 years of isolation.

Worf becomes paralyzed and Dr. Crusher consults a risk-taking researcher to save his life.

Picard forces himself to resist the charms of a female empathic metamorph, who is sent to marry an alien leader as a peace offering.

A child's imaginary playmate takes on real form and threatens the well-being of the Enterprise.

and all this shit is just from one of the good seasons! most of it's pretty unwatchable due to pacing (nevermind the mediocre stories)

29 including The Animated Series.  According to Nefud, it is all one show.

EDIT - not to mention 10 (soon to be 11) films.  That is a sick, sick amount of material if you dig it.  Sorry 'Fud, just being ornery.

same timeframe, same setting, same races, same tone, reused sets, reused cast(s), reused characters, reused story ideas, reused soundtrack, reused props, reused starship designs/models

i could probably do this all day. certainly they aren't connected by a common story but essentially, yeah, all one show

The Original Series was CANCELLED after the 3rd season.  A NEW SHOW set in the same universe was approved and created with STAR TREK TNG and so and so on down the line.

Why isn't there a Star Trek Box Set where you can buy all 29 seasons since it is just one series for a hot price of 4,999.99?  Financing available upon credit check.

you're forgetting the animated series, the aborted star trek: phase II, and the movies. with the exception of the early 70s its been the same bunch of jerks making star trek stories since day 1. arguing the ds9 isn't part of the same creative effort as tos is like saying that you're not related to your grandpa

Example number 2 for internet contrarian.  Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Angel are two different shows with a lot of the same characters set in the same universe.
