| QUOTE: Wow, a lot of Trekkies on here. Seems like I'm the only one here, who don't "get it". My dad is a big fan of the shows, and I've tried to get into a few of them as well, but for some reason I just can't get into them. Is the original the best? As a non-trekkie, which do you think would be the best one to watch? |
Don't worry I'm with u, never got into it.

| QUOTE:Speaking of great ensemble comedies, what about M*A*S*H? It didn't make my top five, but I love it. I've seen every episode multiple times and it's one of those shows that just never gets old. |
That was one of those shows, that seemed to be on a million times a day when I was growing up. I've learned to appreciate it more over the years. Just like Cheers, one of the all-time great ensembles! Some more great ensemble casts include: Night Court, The Office, Newsradio, and Just Shoot Me.

| QUOTE: Nuart, you about have my list 1. Twin Peaks 2. Alfred Hitchcock Hour/Presents- excellent stuff, funny and creepy at the same time 3. Twilight Zone- old black and white ones 4. The Munsters- so much funnier than the Adams Family 5. Gilmore Girls- great show but I don't expect much love for it. Witty dialogue, quirky small town, and I like the fact that it gave young girls a positive role model as opposed to most shows geared towards teenage girls. I would like to throw out an honorable mention to AbFab. I laugh until I cry watching this. |
All good shows though I haven't seen Gilmore Girls.
Did everyone forget "My So-Called Life," Amanda....???? Susan PS Just noticed Angel mentioned "My So-Called Life."

I had phases when I enjoyed watching M*A*S*H and Taxi a lot. It seems to me Newhart was pretty good. And I remember liking Soap.

I think the way they did the TV show was perfect for a TV show. I'm not sure it would have worked if they'd done it like the movie. Why does Alan Alda suck? Okay, he might not be as great as Donald Sutherland, but he's a lot of fun in MASH.

I like WKRP in Cincinati. Our cable has a cool channel, the Retro TV Network which plays all the classics like Dragnet, Get Smart, Incredible Hulk, Newhart, etc. It's great. Something else I liked was Dark Angel, a short lived James Cameron thing. The second season was dumb as hell but the first one was good. I should rewatch My So Called Life.

he's just a smarmy asshole who's clearly full of himself and doing a bad groucho impression when he's not being sanctimonious as all hell.
the show though does have some areas where it's much better than the movie, like the EXTREMELY talented man who played frank burns (i mean no offense to robert duvall, but it just wasnt his role). and klinger is great when written well. i think i just mostly dislike alan alda, loretta switt, and that awful laugh track.

Does anyone have coolsprings phone number, so they can call him and say that he needs to bring along an extra pair of underwear to work on Monday?
Edit: Though the "Free shiping" is a bit disconcerting.

I mentioned it on the previous page of this thread. In the grand scheme of fave tv shows, MSCL lands at number 6 on my list, which is why I didn't mention it in my original post. :) QUOTE: he's just a smarmy asshole who's clearly full of himself and doing a bad groucho impression when he's not being sanctimonious as all hell. the show though does have some areas where it's much better than the movie, like the EXTREMELY talented man who played frank burns (i mean no offense to robert duvall, but it just wasnt his role). and klinger is great when written well. i think i just mostly dislike alan alda, loretta switt, and that awful laugh track. |
Tch. Alan Alda is no more full of himself than the next lead actor in a TV series. I think what makes him so easy to dislike in the case of M*A*S*H is that it becomes clear by the middle of the series that he's been given creative control and it's starting to seep into every corner of the M*A*S*H universe. The more Hawkeye becomes a sanctimonious chowderhead, the more irritated we become with Alda. The coup de gras of course is "Goodbye, Farewell, Amen" which still makes me cringe to this day. I think the last 20 minutes are perfect, but the previous 60 are unwatchable. Loretta Switt...when given an excellent script, the woman is spot-on. But she suffers from her character being cartoonish through the majority of the series, and that's sad. I think her shining moments are in eps like "Father's Day" and "Sticky Wicket". Larry Linville has to be one of the most underrated actors in the series. He made a character so completely despicable and yet at the same time you couldn't help but like Frank Burns and feel a tad sorry for him. I've read interviews with him where he says that he left the series because he felt that Frank Burns had reached the limit of his purpose and he didn't think he could go anywhere else with the character. Made me love him more than ever. And Jamie Farr...he is one of the best parts of the series. :) Klinger was always a fave of mine, even when I was a kid watching the series in first run on TV. :D Jamie Farr seems like the kind of guy I would have fun hanging out with. My favorite M*A*S*H episode also serves as a great example of those times when the show balanced silly and serious as well as the film did. Season 4, episode 9, "Quo Vadis, Captain Chandler?" Bonus: the ep contains my absolute favorite M*A*S*H character ever, Dr. Sidney Freedman, played by the sadly underrated Alan Arbus. AND this ep contains no laugh track. :)

Then again these prices are a little too good.

and that awful laugh track. | The laugh track on MASH does make it unwatchable IMO. But on the DVDs that I have, you can select 'English w/ no laugh track' on the Language settings.

| My friend got a boxset of all the NCIS season thus far and she said they all play great and are in the original packaging. She did say that it took about 2 weeks for her to get them though, which, if you ask me, isn't bad for that price and something that actually works correctly.

Most of them are "Official Asian releases" but some of those Star Trek sets are available as imports on Amazon and they have reviews saying that they are poor bootlegs.

Yup, that was one of the main selling points of the DVD sets for me. Optional laugh tracks. Though I do leave it on for almost all episodes in the first two seasons because it seems far more fitting there, I keep the track off for all the other season where they were still using the laugh track. It's glorious.

OK I have to admit that is really funny. Still I believe it's one of the most realistic shows, and also got better with every season.
