I kept hoping that the "unconfirmed rumors" of her being brain dead that were swirling about yesterday really were just that...rumors. How fucking sad.

I have to plead ignorance on this one. I really didn't know who she was until this tragic event was reported. Anyway, my heart and prayers go out to Liam and her family.

Everyone seemed to like Natasha and it is one of those terrible terrible tragedies that illustrate the old saw about life's fragility. So sorry for her sons and husband most especially but for all those who knew and loved her. I met her briefly at a benefit screening of "The Handmaid's Tale" for Amnesty International. When I read about the accident last night, I pondered how ridiculous life can be when you juxtapose the flukiness of what can happen alongside things we fear. Who in the world would have feared death while learning to ski on a bunny hill? So now the burning media question of the day is: "We want to know YOUR opinion: Should helmets be mandated for skiiers?" All in an effort to make 100% certain that every action taken in life can be made increasingly less lethal. But even with helmets while skiing, bicycling, walking or showering, the truth remains -- prob'ly 4 out of 5 of us are gonna die on of these days anyway.

Average life expectancy Canada 80.34 (14th in the world) Average life expectancy United States 78.06 (45th) From WikiP, but they got it from the CIA World Fact Book, so it is probably socialist propaganda.

Reading the article it's interesting to reflect upon the bias that might be present. It is an op so of course it is all about bias, but still. The author is a doctor so we can guess that he might have some vested interest in the nature of health care in our country. If we looked at the sources, The Chicago Tribune and the Baltimore Sun, we could make some judgment as to what biases they might have. Who owns them? Do they see their primary market demographic as people who are best served by the health care system as it is? Do they have or seek ad revenues from private, for profit health care providers or insurance companies? From the piece;
"What might have happened at an American ski resort? According to a colleague who has worked at two major Colorado ski resorts, the same distance from Denver as Mount Tremblant is from Montreal, things would likely have proceeded differently." (Emphasis added)
I read this as 'if it had happened here, and everything had worked out well, she might have lived.'
I could go on but I'm under no illusions that I will change any ones mind about this issue so I shall cease wanking and state my conclusion; Reading this op I see it as biased, self serving and based largely upon conjecture founded on the authors bias. Does this mean that its conclusions are wrong? No. Does it mean that they are highly dubious? In my opinion, yes. Edit: Emphasis added added and to note that Ms. Richardsons' family, friends and all of those who cared about her have my deepest sympathy.

alas, propaganda or no, a beautiful, talented woman/wife/mother is dead...whilst this happens to the best and the worst of us;(death), it still, no matter the attempts to create irony etc in her death by the media, it does not make it any less tragic

Well, yeah. Speculation can create outcry, but mostly those likely/may have stories are just a space-filler on a slow news day, milking a topic they know people will read about.
Remember Princess Di? God, how long did we have to hear about what might have caused her death?

we had to endure a lot of shit about that after she died, but it's so worth it to not have to hear endless news stories evry time she blows her nose any more.

we still hear about it though; i blame Rupert Murdoch, plus the editors of the Daily Mail...slowly seeping evil and ignorance into Britain...And don't even get me started on Jade Goody...someone who behaves so vulgarly, without dignity or intelligence, who lives a ridiculous existence, suddenly becomes a saint simply because she developed cancer? The British media machine disgusts me, it fucking disgusts me; philistinian crap crap crap. Anyway, sorry, this is about Natasha Richardson.sorry

Biases are present, but facts are, too. In bias vs. right to know, I'd take the risk of appearing a little biased.
In the article Amanda linked to, the author includes that the neurosurgeon who says in the subhead that these types of hematomas are very treatable, but neglects the fact that this hospital didn't have neurosurgeons (and possibly not even CT scanners to properly diagnose the injury). Whether or not she got there on time, she may have died. In order to be transported by helicopter, which the hosptial also didn't have, the pressure would have had to be relieved by such a specialist first. This is all newsworthy information. The incomplete nature of the initial article carefully averts the political issue, but that doesn't make it go away.
