I have a heart palpitation, it's ran through my famiily, my mom had it never drank, smoked, she's gone, my oldest bro, he is still around, scares me if ever I have surgery though.

Been lots of heart stuff in my fam lately. Grandpa's heart attack, my horse-healthy Dad had surgery, my cousin (my age) is going under the knife, too.

I try to drink lots of water, get lots of sleep, take vitamins and walk or bike to run errands if I have time.  I reward myself with treats for completing major tasks to keep myself smiling.  So glad I quit smoking. I tried twice to smoke again and puke city, not good.  My asthma is gone and I can enjoy flowers and perfume again.

I hope everyone is taking care of themselves.

Since I moved back to Ohio (almost 3 years ago) my health has deteriorated.  I have severe allergies and sinus problems.  I just found out that I have a deviated septum which is the cause for a lot of my sinus problems these days.  Instead of having a sinus infection once a year, I have had about 10 in 2 yrs plus one put me in the hospital.  I have also had strep throat twice since being back.  This is part of the reason I am trying to get out of Ohio, for my health.  I have been told that Columbus is in a valley of sorts so people with severe allergies have many problems.

I do workout 5-6 days a week.  That's helped a lot.  I also take vitamins and iron for my anemia.  I drink more water than humanily possible but I would rather have water than a soda any day.  I quit smoking recently and that has helped with the asthma.  I don't drink as much either and I have seen an improvement because of that.

I was never this sick when I lived in Michigan or Minnesota.  I am actually just getting over a sinus infection that spread to my ears and throat.  I have been misribale for the last week.

I am (fingers crossed and thankfully) in good health for my age. Now that my three week work assignment is over, I will hit the gym and revisit my free weights. Diet is good, including sweet rewards, I avoid any product that is non fat, low sodium, etc. I'd rather have sugar than some substitute chemical replacement. I take no prescriptions. All those drugs seem to have possible detrimental side effects that are frightening up to and including death, so I am glad I don't have to take any.

Mental outlook is generally positive. I only drink alcohol lightly in a social situation. I no longer shot speedballs. One minor habit I plan to drop on April Fool's day is one small cigar per day, I don't inhale, but let's face it that smoke is not good. Of course giving up smoking is easy, i've done it a hundred times.

As an adult I have developed some allergies that peak in the springtime especially here in Marin CA. You can see the pale green pollen that covers everything in April. It is a discomfort and actually stuffs up my ears. I use Benedryl for symptomatic relief. Sexual functioning is all systems go.
I sleep like a baby.

As Hyman Roth said " Health, the most important thing. More important than money or power. "

I hope everyone takes good care of themselves.

There is one thing that I do recommend to anyone who has sinus/allergy problems. NeilMed makes this sinus irrigation thing that is wonderful. It's along the same lines as a Netti pot but different.  Because of my sinus/allergy problems I get severe nosebleeds and once I started using this thing the nosebleeds have stopped and my symptoms have gotten much better. My allergist perscribed it to me in lieu of surgery and I am so glad he did. It works wonderfully!

Oh boy, Rebel, this is a good one!  I was rolling along pretty well for decades.  I really dislike going to doctors and postponed a few  year's worth of annual visits.  Then I had this vague nothing pain in my back.  What could it be?  Should I ignore it?  Or did I have a tumor growing on my spine?

Made an appointment with a new primary care physician just to catch up with everything.  Stuff was happening to my friends and each of their ailments had me imagining that I too was plagued by the same.  When Bill Clinton, who is not even an acquaintance, went through his heart surgery, I felt pangs in my own heart.  When my friend died of lung cancer, I felt shortness of breath.  I became highly suggestible.  I hate myself for my suggestiblity and wonder how this sorts itself out in the next couple decades.  I'm not completely convinced that I haven't banged my head on a Bunny Hill though I haven't gone skiing for 35  years!

My appointment with this new doctor corresponded with the time when my mother was in very bad shape in the adjacent hospital.  First thing the doctor tells me:  Wow, your blood pressure is high.  No, I tell her.  It's just this momentary stress.  My blood pressure is fine.  Well, why not track it at home for a week, she says.  Then she feels my neck and says, Your thyroid is enlarged.  She sends me downstairs to the lab for a bone density scan.  The radiologist says, Your lumbar spine is in the 'yellow zone' but your hips are in the 'green' so they're fine.  By the time I got to the blood tests, X-ray, EKG and urine analysis I feared the worst.  As the weeks have gone by, a fine needle aspiration of my thryoid nodules, medication for blood pressure which actually had gone up, and medication for bone density plus new multi-vite and Vit. D/Calcium supplements followed by thyroid replacement medication.  I went from no prescription medication to this.  Okay.  Fine.  I feel fine. But...

I do not sleep through the night.  I feel a lot of stress much of the day but especially in the middle of the night.  I awaken at 4:00 am pretty much every night and berate myself for finding things to fret over at that hour.  I remind myself that 4:00 am is a lousy time to come up with solutions.  Go back to sleep, I tell me.  When the sun comes up and Lola jumps on the bed, I feel like falling into a deep sleep.  And it feels like each morning brings some new problem such as it was two weeks ago with David's excruciating kidney stone pain and subsequent surgical (ouchouchouch) removal of said stone a week ago.  Vicodin, Zofran, Percocet, Levaquin, Colace and Flomax were the prescriptions of choice before the final removal of the week-long "Ureter Stent" that went from the bladder to the kidney.  EEK!  Guys, you don't want to know how a ureter stent is removed.  And you don't want to endure kidney stones either.  Watching someone you love suffer through pain for days on in is a painful experience even if you are not experiencing the same pain.

Someone -- I think it was Marcel Proust -- once said that the least interesting aspect of a man is his medical condition and I tend to agree.  But other times, when I'm walking through the market or driving down the street, I'll glance at someone close by and wonder, "Does he/she have a health problem?"

I thought I had become blase about doctors and hospitals with all the time I've spent in their company this year of 2009 but it isn't true.

So, to answer your question, Rebel.  "How is your health?"  Better than many; worse than some.  If it stays put for a while like this, though, I can live with it.

Thanks for asking.  : )

This is a good topic Reb. We can maybe learn from each other.

I eat garlic -- fresh cloves in food, and pop a garlic pill if i don't eat garlic for a few days. You guys reminded me to pick up some vitamin pills. I have taken a vitamin pill since i was 10 years old ! Of course now and then ya read an article that they are a waste but I still pop a Men's Mature formula tab every day or two. I also eat a pinch of tumeric once in a while.

Smeds , is that Neilmed product over the counter ? I avoid doctors. My insurance kicks in after $ 2500 in a calender year. That way I get a nice low ins. rate and it motivates me to live healthily..

Have you guys noticed how many cable T V commercials are for prescription drugs? Alot.

One thing I don't neglect is dental care-very important IMO. Mouthwash, floss, electric toothbrush and regular checkups.

Oh, when a  Dr. checks my blood pressure it is up. I have "white coat syndrome". I have a machine at home and the numbers return to textbook levels.

Oh, and Susan I'm sure you already know this but... wash your hands well when you leave a hospital or old folks home. Even a container of antiseptic wipes is indicated. Again, probably not news to you.

Yup it is. Here's a link to the product page: NeilMed Sinus Rinse On that sight you can do the store locator to see where it's sold. Most pharmacies are starting to make their own version. I find, though, that Target sells the real thing the cheapest, about $10 or so for a kit. You can also order it online.  That website also has coupons and rebates, which I have utilized.  The NeilMed products work great.  I use the saline spray and find it very beneficial. Let me know if you try it and like it.

I am fine other than I need to lose some weight.  I seem to be losing weight now, by doing little things.  I have been on every diet you can think of.  But now I am doing things like not drinking sodas, only eating two meals and two snacks a day, etc...  And it seems to be working.  I also was doing the Charles Atlas work out plan which was doing wonders and I need to start doing it again.  I have not done it in a few weeks.

QUOTE:only eating two meals and two snacks a day, etc...

You want to be careful with this. if you don't eat enough, you actually start to gain weight because your body goes into starvation mode and stores the energy as fat. I also need to lose weight and I have talked to a nutritionist who gave me the ratios you need to get a day for a 2000 cal diet. Really, you shouldn't go any less than that unless you're under a doctor's supervision. You should also eat 3 smaller meals a day (each consisting of 500 cal) and 3 snacks (each consisting of 250 cal). Believe it or not, you need about 265 grams of carbs, 100 grams of protein, and between 60-65 grams of fat a day to help with weight loss and maintainence. I started to do this and have seen a difference. Also, I have been going to the gym everyday for about 2 hours a day (currently unemployed) and have seen a difference. The actual weight loss has been slow but I am losing fat and gaining musles. In 4 weeks I lost 7 inches off my waiste (overall I have lost quite a bit of inches, but that is the area that lost the biggest). My body will lose the fat but will gain a lot of muscle, which is what you want. So, even though I know I am overweight, I go more by the measurements and BMI than the actual weight. When I was fit and lifting weights everyday I actually weighed over 200 lbs, which a lot of people think is overweight but for my body type it isn't.

Anyway, I suggest finding a gym that has a good trainer program. At mine, I can meet with a trainer whenever I want for free and they actually work with me to get me a customized plan. I have a bulged disc in my neck as well as an ankle problem so working with someone to develop a plan was very beneficial.

You also want to make sure you eat breakfast. I know, it's a cliche but it's true. I feel so much better when I do. I usually make a protein shake (frozen fruit, a cup of soy milk - animal milk makes me vomit - and a scoop of protein powder) or a protein bar. That really helps me get going and sustains me verily long through the day. If I don't eat breakfast I seem to putter out easily. And you should really be eating every 3 hours or so. That helps keep your body from going into starvation mode.

Thanks for the tip on the Neilmed Smeds !!

I'll pick a package up at Target before the pollen really hits in a week or two. I hope you have a mild allergy season.

Thanks for asking, Rebel.  All is well here.  I've been a vegetarian for 30 years, I do Tai Chi daily, and meditate as well.  I eat organic foods whenever possible, and now that spring is here most of my produce will come out of my garden.  I drink spirulina fruit/veggie smoothies every day, take a coral calcium supplement, and as a 53 year old woman, I make my own tincture of chaste tree berries, black cohosh, and dong quai for hormone balancing.  I've had very few menopausal symptoms while those around me struggle with hot flashes, etc.  And I swear by my neti pot.  I wait tables 3 nights a week, and at certain times of year the bugs run rampant.  Every night after a shift I use the neti pot, and so far this has kept me healthy while others sniff and cough.  Oh, I also put a few drops of hydrogen peroxide in my ears after using the neti pot. Other than a very occasional glass of wine, I don't drink. But I do love my daily "night cap" of 2 hits off the pipe! I'm a believer in the power of positive affirmation.  May all Beings be well and happy!

I totally agree with you, Rigpa, about the Neti pot. My NeilMed thing is based off the same theories and I swear by it. It really helps with the icky stuff in the air. How does the peroxide help? I have heard about people doing the same and always wondered the benefits.

Hey, smeds!  Viruses can enter through the ears as well as through the nasal passages, so drops of peroxide in the ears can help knock out any invaders taking that route.  Be well!

Use it twice a day. When I first started using it, I felt it was making it worse then I slowly began to see a difference. I just used it today and I am stuffier now, but I know if I keep it up, everything will get a bit better.

smeds, another thing you might try for sinus infections is putting a few drops of tea tree oil in a bowl of hot water, then lean over and inhale the steam (holding a towel over your head and the bowl helps keep the steam where you want it.) Tea tree oil comes from the leaves of the Australian melaleuca alternifolia tree, and is the most powerful natural antiseptic and antifungal we have.  A bottle of it should be in every medicine cabinet.  I put a few drops in my waterpik water (but don't swallow!).  It also works wonders on all kinds of skin problems.

I have done that before with the tea tree oil an dit has helped. I recently ran out of it though and kinda forgot about it until you just said something. Trust me, I will give anything a try to avoid surgery! :)

For sinus problems (and help losing weight), I can't recommend colonic irrigation and liver detox regimens enough. If you're constipated or just have plaque buildup in your intestines, it will manifest as sinus problems (and sluggishness, and greasy skin.)

Brilliant topic REBEL, in general my health is ok. But after coming back from Texas a few weeks ago, I had a nasty case of sunburn, suffered migraines over there, and coupled with my gf freaking out in the last 2 days of my trip (constant crying etc) meant I never got to come over your way and meet ya, which I was looking forward to very much!!! In turn began to suffer severe exhaustion once back to work, and recent staffing problems havent helped a bit, only just getting back to normal, very nearly passed out twice at work, which was worrying. The solution really is simple, I need to come off nightshifts, as it's not good for your health! Fret not though REBEL, I am coming back over sometime soon, hopefully by the end of year, and Lizzie will be getting told we are coming your way lol

Susan, I know what kidney stones feel like I had em 16 months ago, and I wouldnt wish them on my worst enemy, it's amazing something so small can cause so much pain. It felt like I'd been repeatedly booted in the balls with a pair of steel toecapped boots, trying to pee, agony when suffering from them! Luckily, mine passed within 2 days, but dang I hope I never suffer from them again! After that scare I cut nearly all the salt out of my diet, which made a huge difference!

When I have more free time, I plan on going to the gym and start toning up my arm and leg muscles, as well as shedding a few pounds lol.

I also smoke about 20 a day, mainly due to stress at work. Ive made a promise to Lizzie to at least try nicotine patches as I know she hates me smoking, if I end up staying in the States, I will be quitting as American cigarettes are disgusting, you guys have weaker filters in your smokes than us!

Wow, this IS a good topic! And, I HAVE had some health concerns in the past year, and now I see everyone else is getting old, too! I found out a year ago, and it was confirmed again this past month, that my blood sugar levels have elevated to the point of a medical diagnosis of diabetes. Bummer. And I found out I have a lot of gallstones, but the doctor said if I don't have attacks, she's not going to do anything about it. My cholesterol is high, but has always been so. Some 8 or 9 years ago, I started going to an Ayurvedic doctor, and he put me on a diet with a strict formulation of spices, including turmeric Raymond, and over an 18 month period, my cholesterol went down over a hundred points. Not to a healthy level (it was really high - walking stroke kind of high), but in a much better neighborhood. I think meditation does help (watch it, Susan!), and like her, though, I have the 4am snap awake, mind at a hundred miles an hour period of wakeful worriness. Then, as the day is starting, I go back to sleep. Weird. I stopped eating red meat at the time the Ayurvedic doctor put me on that diet, and do not miss it. I have a steak or prime rib type dinner now about once or twice a year, after abstaining completely for 7 years. I eat a lot of vegetables and whole grains, not enough fruit, and stick to chicken, mostly skinless, boneless breasts, roasted/baked in a little bit of olive oil with vegetables, and fish. We have a marvelous amount of fresh local fish here in Marin County. The only problem is that it's expensive! (Though not as bad as when I lived in Maui!) But, I don't exercise at all... bad, bad... I live 8 miles from one of the most beautiful beaches in California, and have never been there - I work too much! I always say, "I have a studio tan, a studio physique, and a face built for radio!" But the funny thing is, even though I am definitely past 'mid-life', I still picture myself as I did when I was young. Problem is, I see my Dad every time I look in the mirror! But I do feel the creep of time as it affects the body. I cannot do many things I used to do, and the flexibility factor is a joke. Oh well... there it is. Such kvetching, I'm telling you! But I still play guitar really loud and have a great partner and a great band, and I am loving life. So I'm getting old, what's the alternative!?
