A good way to be humbled from writers vanity is to sign up for a writers group.  The only problem is that the advice you get will not help much.  It will be things like "The middle sucks"  or "I did not like this part".  You may luck out and find someone who can give you good advice.  The instructor in the Truby one on one course was awesome.  He could see mistakes I was making a mile away.  There are some really good script reviewers on Trigger Street.  I think it is a talent within itself to not only see what is wrong with a story, but to help the writer fix it.

yes, there's no doubt in my mind that it was the accident that caused his writing to go south. almost everything before that was fine but then something happened after that accident.

What are the legal aspects of mentioning songs in novels?

Isn't it okay to mention an artist by name and the name of their song, but not the lyrics because they are copyrighted?

I haven't written anything real, just some academic articles.  I don't particularly like academic writing.  It takes so much concentration and precision, and such a premium on brevity.  My best one was published in Nature though, which is pretty cool.  Only bummer was someone pointed out a big typo in it after it was published.  Gah!

I just agreed to write an academic book chapter, which sounds fun and is scary at the same time.  I'm going to get to write it with a good friend of mine- we had talked about writing something together for a long time and now we get to.

I don't know that writing comes naturally enough to me that I'll ever write anything for real.  Maybe a kids biology book or travel book?  [dork] maybe a tolkien fan fiction story [/dork]

That's awesome, Kevin6002!  Congrats!  What's the name of it and where is it being published?

It's a Christian Horror Magazine.  I have another story.  Not sure where I am going to send it.  I have been too lazy to type it.
