We choose out lovers based on the rewards they offer us, and they choose back based on what we have to offer in return. It's like a business transaction.

Conformity to social expectations can be a reward. But evolutionarily speaking, youth/beauty and status/success reap greater rewards.

Women release only one egg a month compared to the millions of sperm produced by a man each day. Their duty to propagate the species necessitates carrying a baby to term, so instinct will lead them to seek a partner who can provide for her during this time (status, success.) Men only need to look for signs of fertility (youth, beauty) so they can best spread their genetic material.

Studies reflect the prevalence of the January-December phenomenon, which supports the evolutionary theory of attraction:

Well, let me cite one instance of what can happen.  My brother, when in his mid-forties, married a woman in her early twenties.  At that point, she was a gym teacher/coach, as was my brother.  She looked up to him.  They had two children.  As the years went on, she continued growing/maturing, while my brother stayed the same.  She went to nursing school, became a nurse, started expanding her social circle.  She lost 50 pounds. She got a big administration job.  When she hit her mid 30's, she wasn't looking up to my approaching 60 brother, who was still enjoying coaching.  She started an affair with a doctor her age.     D-I-V-O-R-C-E.  This is what I see as the problem in these May-December marriages.  One person is pretty much set as to who they are, the other is still becoming who they will be.  If there are no children involved, I don't see any problem.  Split, and move on.  But it is painful when you watch children suffer.
