| QUOTE: My friend Rob, an SM dom & talented folk singer/guitarist (who also partied with Lennon and Harrison in the 60's,) used to jam with Utah. If there was ever trouble, I imagine it was the two of them. I only saw Utah live once, but he had me in tears. He should really have run for president. |
Rob sounds like quite the interestingly complex friend, I suspect you're fortunate to know him. Utah is great. I was lucky enough to catch him three times, once at Town Hall and twice at Folklife. The second time he was having trouble with his hand so he preformed acapella. Amazing. Listening to the past didn't go anywhere as I type
My favorite bit of his; (i will not obey from Fellow Workers, lyrics copied from here .)
The new ruling party is holding the aces The rest of the cards are all missing faces. I'm sorry I can't know you today. What can one say? I will not obey. Give us your sons and give us your daughters No one is safe or immune from the slaughter. How indifference makes then rage. What can one say? I will not obey. National Guard or freedom fighters All houses belong to cigarette lighters. But who hides in the smoke? What can one say? I will not obey. Better perhaps to perish outside Of the bunkers where our generals hide. I turn away and spit. What can one say? I will not obey. Give us the minds of your children to learn The substance of books we have not yet burned. But can they read the sky for rain? What can one say? I will not obey. Soon all tyrants will feel our impatience We choose to create our own combinations. I was always willing to agree. What can one say? I will not obey. The essence of contract is agreement Not coercion or obedience. And agreement is sacred. What can one say? I will not obey. There are so few wars of people's liberation For the people have so seldom risen Only the armed faction. Listen! The armed faction lies. They recreate the state through their action. When the people rise It is not they But the state Which dies. I sing this song for the prisoners' release Most of all now for the new state police. You see, the guns have changed hands again. What can one say? I will not obey. (Emphasis added) Back toward topic of libbies vs. connies (from The Way of Chuang tzu, Thomas Mertons edition) "Tao is obscured when men understand only one of a pair of opposites, or concentrate only on a partial aspect of being. Then clear expression also becomes muddled by mere word play, affirming this one aspect and denying all the rest. Hence the wrangling of and ; each denies what the other affirms, and affirms what the other denies. What use is the struggle to set up "No" against "Yes," and "Yes" against "No? Better to abandon this hopeless effort and seek the true light!" (break) "However this may be, life is followed by death; death is followed by life. The possible becomes impossible; the impossible becomes possible. Right turns into wrong and wrong turns into right - the flow of life alters circumstances and thus things themselves are altered in their turn. But disputants continue to affirm and t deny the same things they have always affirmed and denied, ignoring the new aspects of reality presented by the changes in conditions." ... "The wise man therefore, instead of trying to prove this or that point by logical disputation, sees all things in the light of direct intuition." ... "Hence he sees that on both sides of every argument there is both right and wrong." (Utah is doing that fridge bit right this second!) " He also sees that in the end they are reducible to the same thing, once they are related to the pivot of Tao." ... "He who grasps the pivot is at the still-point from which all movements and oppositions can be seen it their right relationship. Hence he sees the limitless possibilities of both "Yes" and "No." Abandoning all thought of imposing a limit or taking sides, he rests in direct intuition. Therefore I said: "Better to abandon disputations and seek the true light!" (Dude walked in mid type, was just tickled Utah was on.)
