Is this a serious nationwide problem that is endangering everyone in our country or is the current administration making a mountain out of a mole hill playing the fear card so the messiah will look like he handled this crisis or "cured" it? There has only been ONE death (babies and old people die of the flu every day anyway), but I can't flip channels for 3 minutes without coming across the doom and gloom of this "world ending plague". Signed, Those People

Yes, they're making a mountain out of a mole hill. The swine flue is just a mutated form of the human flu anyway. If you look at statistics of human influenza compared to this new version, our influenza is much much wors.
And the baby that died in TX, who came from Mexico, that had it already had problems anyway which heightened the flu.
They always use the world pandemic. What people fail to remember is that pandemic doesn't mean DEATH. It just means that a lot of people will/can get it.
CDC has already said that Thermaflu and Relenza will help treat it.

???? Are you guys complaining about the governments response, or about the media's coverage? Because I've got to say I don't see much to complain about the actual measures being taken. And for chrissake, he's even giving props to the Bush admin for doing something right in establishing some plans in case there is something bad. All I've heard about so far is 1) not closing the border with mexico (not overreaction) 2) making a small proportion of the strategic stockpile of anti-virals available should they be necessary (not over-reaction) 3) commissioning the development of a vaccine, should it be necessary (and the fact that this emerged at the tail end of flu season experts suggest it will come back possibly worse next year) 4) suggesting you don't go up to someone and cough in their mouth. (common courtesy)
Oh, and dead Mexican people don't count? wtf? -the other people (ps. J i hope you know I was joking in that other email)

The media coverage is a joke. They must really think the majority of the nation is a bunch of mouthbreathing inbred douches who believe pigs can fly (swine flu).

First and foremost there is no cure for a virus. Medicines don't touch viruses at all, only bacterial.
Not complaining about the government response at all. I think the media is just going over the edge on this. This flu is just like any flu, and if anyone would take the time to actually read about it, you'd find that out.
This had nothing to do with administrations.
Although it is a tragedy that a 23-month old died because of it, that unfortunatly, is what the media is going to play on in this. Like J said, people die of the flu every single day, but we never hear about it becuas it's not this "new, you're going to die if you get it" flu. Don't you remember the whole bird flu thing? That kind of pandered out after a few weeks. It's going to be the same with this one.
It's just a simple flu that has just mutated, and as long as people are not immuno-compromised in some way, everyone will be fine. Children will be effected in some way because their immune systems are not like adults. Older adults will be the same way.
What infuriates me is people calling this such a pandemic that the slightest sniffle people get/have are in the ERs crowding it and affecting those the people who are actually ill.
But what do I know. I just work in the medical field, get new info, and talk out of my ass most of the time.

(Why is this in politics?)
Here are the CDC press briefing transcripts (or mp3's, if you prefer) for anyone who is interested and wants the horse's mouth version. Last updated was yesterday:

| The media is one big spin machine that can skew the way they cover current events to paint the current administration in either a positive or negative light in relation to the way they handle said issue. I'll give you one guess how it will be spun concerning current said administration. There are a lot of dumb people out there that get spoonfed their news and believe every word they say and that's exactly what the media's goal is.

I don't really watch the national news- so apparently I haven't heard the "the soothing chocolate power of President Obama's voice will neutralize the flu by its mere coolness" stories you are referring too. It also sounds like the government response is more or less appropriate right now. So you'll have to enlighten me with specifics, cause I just don't see the political issue here. And no I don't want to visit Fox Nation to find out.

A friend of mine coined, or at least I like to think he did, a term for the swine flu - Hamthrax. Love it.
As long as people take care of themselves, and go to the doctor right away if they exhibit symptoms, then everything will be okay. I hate the way the media preys on the masses (irrational) fears. Yes, I am a former media person and I still hate the media.

Last night we got the full scoop on the "real truth" about the swine flu from our waiter -- he said it is a manufactured distraction constructed by corrupt Mexican officialdom and the drug lords designed to cover up the news that drugs are now legal in Mexico. Smalls quantities of cocaine only and of course weed. He said they figure great waves of tourism will follow after the false Swine Flu Pandemic hoo haa dies down. Pretty good one, huh? Now I'm going to follow up on that Ron Paul link. Have a feeling what he has to say but he's always good for a yuk. Susan
