the mods here can probably give you a fuller answer, but they are more or less the same as email spam except that they create forum messages. There's some kind of program that lets them defeat simple forum registration obstacles, then they generate vague messages that are designed to look like a new user.  There's usually a hyperlink in the message or signature that will either try to sell you some ViAgRa or download child porn onto your computer.

I was on another board a few months ago with a more or less MIA admin, and it got completely swamped by these messages, literally dozens or hundreds of new messages, and random necro replies of messages from years ago.  I've been very thankful that the admins here are so awesome and we aren't troubled by this stuff very often.

Not all bots are bad, nor are they all there to post random crap on your board. There are also harmless bots that you can give permission to be on your board. At the fest board we have  Google bot, Yahoo! bot, and MSN bot (among others). They are merely there to collect data for their search engines.
