(but not really)

remember a few weeks back, when i was wistfully wondering what social movement i would be dragging my heels on when i was in my fifties, like the "greatest generation" and race, or the boomers and homosexuality? i think i found it:

http://www.newsweek.com/id/195694

this article details a growing movement of "mad pride," i.e. people who think of think that their mental illnesses are a gift, and shouldn't be cured (somewhat like "deaf culture"). as someone with a mild mental illness (add diagnosed in 1991, WAY before they were handing that diagnosis out like shiners give out candy), this seems like complete horseshit to me. because of moving to a new city and an insurance situation, i've been off my meds for 2 years and it hasn't really been a treat. i can only imagine what it's like when the ancient jellyfish priest from the planet jupiter who lives in your head tells you that he's a blessing, not a curse, and DONT TAKE YOUR PILLS THEY ARE POISON.

Hey Fud, why don't you go to a doctor on your own dime and get your medication?

I am being serious here. Big deal -a couple of cyber posters on the internets disagree on what our society should do. that is hardly a cue to express right on the surface anger, ad hominem insults and hatred at others. I do see bursts of humor from you and believe it or not i wish you the best in life. Why not agree to disagree ?

You say you have never acted violently in your life. maybe an old fashioned bar fight would be cathartic for you.

Take care man.

i actually finally got a referral friday, i plan on calling them tomorrow.

add has nothing to do with the fact that i think being silent when people are behaving in an immoral way is wrong. to trot out the most cliche hyperbolic example possible, i wish the minority had been more vocal in germany in the 30s. just saying.

and there's no way i'm taking advice from someone who thinks hurting someone would be cathartic, no offense.

To be frank, I'm not really sure whom you're speaking well of. I'm sure I'm not the only one.

This entire thread made me scratch my head at its absurdity.  Everyone on this thread continue to post.

Do think meds (antidepressants, etc.) are really needed or are they just a rue by the pharmaceutical companies to have people dependent or think they need to buy these drugs?

uncharacteristic serious post : Yes i believe these medicines are worthwhile and help alot of people. thank goodness to Big Pharma for these helpful advancements.

Ot : i notice Fud did not trash my post to him yesterday. i think (can not put words in his mouth) that he understood my sincere concern for a fellow TPGer. I respect Fud and i think he deserves a good life. i like you Fud !

agreed- I think these meds are saving people's lives every day.  However, I'm sure there are some people who could be helped by changes in diet, counciling, avoiding or fixing the things in their lives that are making them depressed in the first place.  In other words, there may be people who turn to meds as the first option when they probably shouldn't.

In case you missed the part of his post where he said he has ADD, there's a part in the first post where he says that he has ADD.

Roger that.  I was intimidated by the semi wall of text.  Brevity is in bed with me.

Eh, detox from your meds if you feel more like yourself without them and you're not standing in the middle of Times Square with a foil hat on.

Then again, people get retarded drunk and high on purpose-- and that's expensive, man.

in my own case it's essentially a matter of productivity. i finally have a good, challenging job, and i'm sick of getting derailed every time someone is talking near me, or i see a bird out my window

Don't Ritalin and cocaine essentially do the same thing to your neurochemistry?

I'm also easily distracted. I wonder at what point you get the diagnosis to get a scrip for the legal grounding center...

Have you tried TM? ;)

i wouldnt know anything about ritalin, i've only ever taken dexadrine.

meditation helps some, mostly with internal distractions. but when there's a gaggle of assholes talking near my desk and i can't concentrate, i find myself back at the tpg postinginstead of working.
