I have to wonder what took McNamara 30 years to publicly declare how wrong he considered his strategies for Vietnam to be.  Also, the director of the documentary about McNamara, The Fog of War, has said that McNamara told him many times what a debacle the Iraq war would be. So, again, what caused him to keep silent?  We will never know.
