Michael Yon.  For those of you who know of him, you'll no doubt have visited his website . For those of you who don't know of him, check it out.  He's one of the handful of US journalists covering the war in Afghanistan. He spent many moons in Iraq earlier and you can read all about it from his first hand reports.  There aren't a lot of people brave enough to report live from a war zone for the extended amount of time that he does so that I think his thoughts have a lot of merit.

This was supposed to be up in POLITICS.  Sorry.

Try that tusk again, Booth.

Point being that any one individual, with the overlay of life's philosophical delusions and illusions acting as partial blinders, cannot possibly visualize the complete animal.  In this case war.  Yon has his.  Fisk has his.  LetsRoque has his.  And even Nuart has hers.  One more equals 5 blind men.

Thanks for the wee dose of cryptic babble up there. Whilst I am aware of the point you are making, I am just unsure of its relevance to the topic of frontline war reporting?

I don't see why that's obtuse.  Two guys go to Iraq.  Or Afghanistan.  They are reporters.  They are human beings.  Each comes into the fray with a lifetime of personal history, views, attitudes.  Yes, they are both in the same country covering the same war but each will find themselves with different takes on the same event.  In real simple terms, one may be someone who comprehends that war is the human condition and with that knowledge, evaluate the warriors of his country with a special regard and respect.  Another may be fundamentally anti-war.  It's mean, it's icky.  It's chaotic and everyone dies.  In the end, it's not worthwhile.  As the recent centenarian WWI veteran was reported to have said when asked whether the Great War was worthwhile, "Not even one single death."  From that divide, we plunge forward.  Nationalism vs. Internationalism.  Patriotism toward one's own country vs. detachment from that archaic stance.  We are the world.  No better; no worse.

There.  Isn't it more clear now?  No?  I didn't think so.

War is the human condition? In that case allow me to ask you a few questions.

Do you, as a habit, pop down to your local supermarket, pull out a rocket launcher, wipe out every employee in sight and then proceed to take what you want?

Possibly not.

Maybe you get poor young males with limited career options to do it instead?

Being far removed from such a dangerous situation yet achieving your goals has to be the optimal choice right?

Also, is the appeal to nationalism compatible with millions of your own people living in poverty?

Indeed. Ridiculous rationalisations for bloodthirst bring too many questions out in me. I apologise.
