Just had to share this. It's political family fun. I know that many families went through a lot of strife the last 8 years with Bush. I come from a right-leaning family - even my extended family leans right - at times ,further right than me.

So there's always these stupid emails going back and forth. My grandmother recently forwarded an email about Michelle Obama's assistants which has this article in it.

Snopes says it's partially true and partially false .

But what's funny about this is that for MONTHS, even during the campaign, my family members would forward these emails around about Obama. In most cases, they were way off-base, and Kelly and I would often respond back with links regarding the truth (from Snopes or other sources). We've stopped doing it for quite some time, but one of the people who received this email responded to my grandmother AND everyone else on this email chain.

I'll summarize the email: The article is a fabrication from "right-wingers who are fanatically doing everything they can to discredit our President and First Lady." Writer goes on to say that the real irony is that the people forwarding these around are Christians who have forgotten a commandment - do not lie. She then goes on to tell everyone that we should be spending our time volunteering, etc. And ends itw ith "Shame on ALL of you who are doing everything yo ucan to divide this country simply because the election didn't go your way."

Now as I am reading this, I'm thinking - "and I bet you were perfectly okay with the left shredding the country apart by attacking Bush right?"

So after some time thinking it over, I decide to reply back (best that me - someone generally level-headed compared to some of my other fmaily members on this email) with:

"No offense - but a simple link to Snopes explaining the truth would've been nice rather than attacking people. God bless."

The day has passed and the writer wrote EVERYONE back (not just me). And again I'll summarize: Writer has been silent until now, and as long as right-wingers are attacking "our president and/or his wife then they are going to hear what I have to say about it." Writer goes on to say that right wingers have been very vocal in their attacks and that it is hypocritical to expect people to sit by and let them (right wingers) rip this country to shreds. Writer says that he/she has requested my grandmother remove her from these emails and that it's disrespectful for not doing so (I agree). Also mentions that he/she is a family member - and I have NO idea who it is. LOL! Writer then says "if you're going to ask people to remain silent about THEIR opinions, then perhaps you should keep YOUR opinions to yourself as well."

WOW. Didn't give an opinion in my email nor did i tell the writer to keep his/her thoughts to themself.  So I decided to reply with something along these lines: Right-wingers will not listen if you just attack them, just like the left won't listen if you just attack them. It's pointless to attack - just helps to tear the country to shreds. I said that at no point did I say not to respond, and in fact said that he/she can respond if he/she wants, but that if the person keeps attacking, no one is going to see anything but the attack.

I don't know, just found the whole thing funny. Waiting for a response now....

I NEVER dicuss politics with my family.  They are Baptists.

Regarding Michelle Obama- one might need 20 attendants if they were subject to the level of scrutiny that she is.  i got a laugh out of the big deal they made about her wearing shorts.  WTF?

Laura and Hillary had just as many so it's really a non-debate. I saw the article on her shorts - seriously? Shorts? But then again, any time Obama takes his shirt off, the press goes wild so I guess Michelle wearing shorts coming off of AF1 would be a big deal too.

I don't talk politics with family either (only my dad). We all agree for the most part - I just find that when you all agree, it tends to be boring and turns into a hate other people mentality. With my dad, it's different for some reason.

In any case - my uncle chimed in last night, along with someone else (not sure who he was - I think a distant cousin). And as I thought, they both went on the liberal vs conservative attack. Followed by the person I mentioned above saying she's not going to talk to anyone about it. Followed by one of my cousins telling her to quit sending her email because she doesn't know who in the world she is (seems like no one knows who she is - probably a 2nd or 3rd cousin).

Strangely enough - she hasn't written me back. And I've been the nice one to her. :-) LOL

family....one I reason I moved away - to be away from the drama! :)

Pretty funny Jordan. I'm curious if the e-mails continue.

Our family rarely discusses politics. I guess that is why I like talking here. :) My sister and I are both left leaning now (although I still don't talk politics with her because she gets too worked up) and the rest of the my family are very conservative. Seems like people take politics very personally which causes anger and hurt feelings. Same with religion, most people don't like having their world view challenged. I can talk politics with my dad only, we discus politics from analytical and strategic standpoints. We don't see these discussions as personal attacks against each other. We both realize politicians from both sides have no personal interest in us so why make anything personal.

I love snopes by the way! It helped set more than a few people straight on the John Kerry swift boat attacks in 2004 that were going around on TV and e-mail.

so nothing new on this front. Some 2nd or 3rd cousin wrote a nice-nice email about family, and it's a shame that no one knows each other (yawn).
