George Harrison's soundtrack to the film Wonderwall was the first official solo album by one of the Beatles. I think it was late 1968.
As to who is actually credited with breaking the group up...I'd have to say it probably started with George, who was starting to become a good songwriter, but John and Paul would only toss him crumbs, a song per album. I think George was the first Beatle to actually take a break from the group for a while, (Ringo, too). But John was the first to officially announce he was leaving the group, around Sept. 69. The Chuck Berry song was "You Can't Catch Me", and the first line in "Come Together" is almost identical to Berry's. Obviously, John was paying tribute to Berry. But I think it was Berry's music publisher, who owned the rights to Chuck Berry's songs, that brought the lawsuit. Ka-ching!

Paul was blamed for a long time with breaking up the Beatles, but it was John who wanted out, and told McCartney "I want a divorce". Paul was the main force that was trying to keep them together, and whether or not he started legal action, that was after the fact anyway.

John and Yoko formed the Plastic Ono Band in 1969, and after a successful gig John officially left The Beatles in Sept. 69. McCartney, who tried to keep the band together, admitted they were disbanded in Nov. 69. It wasn't until 1971 that he sued for dissolution of the band's contractual relationship.

| 3) Which Beatle is credited with actually breaking the group up? |
i guess this depends on what is meant by "credited with actually breaking..." some would say its a legal manner legally based on a business partnership. even in that case "give peace a chance" was credited to lennon\mccartney tho is was all lennon and his impromptu hotel singalong and after the beatles were done. i can see how lennon just saying theyre over could be vaild, but both harrison and starr did that numerous times. just because he was one of the two leaders of the band, i dont think that gives anymore credence to a remark or declaration of actuality. i still stand by the legalese that paul dissolved the band legally, and therefore actually. not to get all semantic up in here. apologies for that.

It's irrelevant that he started the legal action as the band would have never played together again by that point. If you were talking about this from a strict legal point-of-view perhaps you're right, but we're clearly not here.

I'm with glospurs. Both George and Ringo flirted with leaving, and were pulled back in. Paul tried to keep the band together. But when John called it quits, that was it. No more Beatles. Paul's actions legally were way after the fact...a necessary completion to what must have been contractual nightmares. One Suave Folk, what did YOU have in mind?

Mmm, quite a can of worms (or beetles) I opened. I just read an article in Rolling Stone on the final days of the group & yes, George & Ringo did initial quitsies, but it was John who was the giant ego who killed it for good. Even Yoko was shocked when he announced it. She certainly didn't want it to happen, because now John was her sole responsibility. There was no "Fabs" for him to bounce off of. Okay, anyone else have questions? I was just in 7-11 & even they have the new remasters for sale!!! "I'll have a Big Gulp & ummm, Magical Mystery Tour, please."

ok! in the face of overwhelming evidence from people who's opinions i respect, i admit my defeat. i guess paul's actions could be interpeted as saving face, doing it legally before everyone else, even tho the other three were already out. I STAND CORRECTED!

I believe he plays sax on both Baby, You're A Rich Man & You Know My Name (Look Up The Number). My turn: 1) Who's credited with coming up with the classic early Beatles look (the bowl cuts, collarless suits & Cuban boots)? 2) Describe the classic "offensive" album cover that was pulled 3) What was the inspiration for the band's name & what was the longer version?

1) I think photographer Astrid Kirchherr, who was the girlfriend of Stu Sutcliffe (The Beatles first bass player) cut his hair in the mop-top during their Hamburg days. So the clothes were probably her sense of style as well.
2) Oh, I'd forgotten about that cover..Yesterday and Today... the butchered dead babies..the boys are wearing white butcher jackets, and are holding decapitated dolls, and there's meat pieces here and there. What were they thinking?
3) I thought Buddy Holly and the Crickets were the inspiration for the name, but as Beetles, which was changed to the cooler Beatles. But I don't know about a longer version.

Rigpa beat me to the first two, but didn't quite get the last one. Their original name was the Silver Beetles.

Sheryl Lee played Astrid in Backbeat, Iain Softley's 1994 movie about the Beatles' Hamburg days.
