O frabjous day! Callooh! Callay! A new movie by Terry Gilliam! Christopher Plummer as Doctor Parnassus. Tom Waits as the Devil, Mr. Nick! Heath Ledger in the film he was making when he died...Johnny Depp, Jude Law, and Colin Farrell help finish it. Something to look forward to! http://www.sonyclassics.com/theimaginariumofdoctorparnassus/ Have any U.K. members out there seen it yet? It better be more widely distributed than NY and LA, is all I can say...

I was looking forward to this, so I decided to watch my two favourite (and only) Gilliam DVDs, 12 Monkeys and Brazil. 12 Monkeys was still good, but the twist is nowhere near as revolutionary as I'd somehow memorised it. But I liked Bruce Willis and Madeleine Stowe, and it had some nice ideas and imagery. But crucially, the imagery was married to a coherent plot. Whereas Brazil sorely lacks this. Visually, it's nice (but not unbelievable), but it just makes very little sense. Which I can normally enjoy (most Lynch films, some Cronenbergs and recent films like Synecdoche New York which I didn't understand but loved), but here it just made the film tedious. I'm not sure how I ever really enjoyed it.
So, coupled with the recent terrible reviews of Parnassus I won't be seeing the new film! I also watched Monty Python's Holy Grail at the cinema recently, and it had its funny moments, but it had plenty of very unfunny moments too.
This is a pretty negative first reply, I'm sorry (especially seen as I haven't watched the film), but I'd be interested to hear what others think about Gilliam films.

I've seen almost every Gilliam film, and I can honestly say that Fear and Loathing is his best work. Brazil is too long but is somewhat saved by the excellent ending. Tideland and Brothers Grimm are terrible. The Fisher King is fairly uninteresting. I remember liking Baron Munchausen. 12 Monkeys is all right. Monty Python and the Holy Grail was pretty cringeworthy last time I watched it.
I'm not enthusiastic about it, but I'll probably watch it when it's released on DVD.

I never pay attention to reviews of Gilliam films. The critics hated Fear and Loathing, which a lot of us think is his best work. I've seen them all, and only Tideland and Brothers Grimm leave me cold. Kenneth Turan of the L.A. Times called Parnassus a "remarkable film":
