hey y'all. a while ago i had issues with trojans etc, which i posted on this board aboot. that's all fine now...........Anyway, I have checked dedicated Tech forums, but cant seem to get a decent answer, so thought i'd try here again.

A lot of the time, my web browsers (mostly use firefox) will freeze to the annoying : (not responding)    it does this rather frequently, so frequently that at times simple tasks take and hour when they should take ten minutes. At times opening folders etc on my desktop have (not responding) too...it really seems to be slowing down. Have used AVG, removed trojans, defragmented, tried cleaning up disc space...   Is there any more that i can do?  By the way, my OS is Vista, which I have heard is a bitch, would this be contributing?

Cheers folks

do you have instant search installed - I think that's what it's called. vista handles this Microsoft program better than XP does but that could be causing you some issues too, assuming there are no more trojans in there somewhere. This plugin constantly runs in the background indexing your computer so you can search.

You may still have some entrenched trojans that won't let go, or keep getting installed once you remove them - I've seen that before. They get inside some low level files and the only fix I know is to reformat and reinstall the OS. If you do that, go ahead and consider doing the Vista to 7 jump while you're at it.

a couple of longshots, focusing on the web browser...

Are you doing anything funny with proxy servers? In particular with firefox, I had problems where if I had it set to go through a proxy server but was on campus (where proxy wasn't needed). Pages would take literally minutes to load, until I learned to turn off proxy quickly when I got to work.   this has gotten much better with recent updates...

Anything funny with flash-heavy websites? I've stopped looking at ESPN.com because it's got too much junk on it.

You might also do a quick search for things that speed up firefox (like clearing the cache).

And in general, windows seems to have a fun tendency to always be installing some update in the background, that can slow things up, or have a slow start-up.

my ignorance of dealing with proxy servers is great...how do i adjust it?    Seems no better or worse with busy, flash heavy sites...

Is windows 7 really that great an upgrade? Is it worth the money?

It's not as big as a resource hog as Vista so that's why I mentioned it.

do you know if you're even using a proxy?

My guess is that it's not likely a proxy. you just have some leftover Trojan issues.

On my Vista laptop, it's pretty reproducible that if I have Firefox running for an hour or two (especially if it's left idle for a significant part of that) the memory usage will jump through the roof.  It gets incredibly slow, and I have to end the program and restart it.  It takes a good minute or so to launch again, but then it's fine (until it happens again).  I just kind of swear and accept it at this point.

Flash can do that. I used to use Pandora a lot at work on XP, and if I left it overnight, and came in the next morning, it would've eaten a TON of memory. Cooped - what is your memory like when FireFox stops responding?

(Interesting, I'll pay more attention to see if Flash is a factor in mine...)
