That's right, folks! My "Did you notice" threads are back... I guess (and I hope) that you remember and know the Twin Peaks ones that I made years ago and that still can be found here... Well, I was rewatching some Lynch films and I realized it would be a great idea to do the "Did you notice" treatment to DL movies... I don't know why I didn't before... The best way is obviously chronological, but here's the thing...I'm not in the mood to rewatch movies I saw too recently (just one example, THE ELEPHANT MAN), so I'll do it randomly with films I planned to watch anyway and eventually I'll add the other ones... In time every Lynch film (and who knows, maybe shorts and other stuff) will have its "Did you notice" thing. And as I said in my first TP "Did you notice" thread many of the things I'll list are well-known facts, maybe some of them are just in my imagination and in other cases I may be completely wrong... Of course corrections and additions are more than welcome! Let's have fun! Here we go:
- There's a dog, a dalmatian, next to the fireman who waves his hand in the fire truck from the first scene. - Jeffrey's car (or at least the car he uses later) is seen in the establishing shot of his house. It's also seen outside Beaumont's later. - Mr. Beaumont falls into a mud puddle surrounded by sticks and a cable. Its purpose? - The man outside a toy store playing with...what? - The logo of the Lumberton Police includes a log. - A strange sculpture inside the police station. Looks like a snowy mountain surrounded by two pineapples. - A sign reading: "PLEASE DEPOSIT PARKING VIOLATION PAYMENTS HERE". - A map of Lumberton in detective Williams office, where we can read its state, North Carolina. - When the coroner says the ear probably was cut by scissors there is a quick cut to the next scene, which begins with scissors cutting a police ribbon. - Aunt Barbara is worried that Jeffrey may go to Lincoln, that's where Dorothy lives. - When Jeffrey does his night walk we can see a man standing very still with a small dog. He's wearing sunglasses though it's night. - A big fountain next to Dorothy's building, seen when Jeffrey and Sandy arrive. - "WELCOME CATS!" sign in Sandy's high school. I think Wildcats is the name of the Wilmington (where BV was shot) football team. - In the establishing shot of Arlene's we can see a logging truck passing in front of it (like in many shots of the Double R exterior!) and an ice truck, which is seen also from inside the diner. - In the scene at the diner we can clearly see that Jeffrey wears an earring. Also, he doesn't even touch his cherry coke. Sound familiar? - In the next shot of Dorothy's building we can see the fountain again and obviously the church in front of it. Sandy has the Awake! magazines Jeffrey mentioned. - Looks to me that the "Out of order" sign in the elevator was written by Lynch himself. Very similar handwritting. - Two horns in the Slow Club's sign and also in the stage. - Angelo Badalamenti is the piano player when Dorothy sings. - Dorothy changes her clothes after 'Blue Velvet', when she sings 'Blue Star'. - Dorothy's apartment: there is a plant above the toilet tank that looks like two she has in the entrance. - There are musical notes in little Donnie's hat. - The distorted face seen in Jeffrey's vision/thought belongs to his father. - Frank drinks Pabst Blue Ribbon (of course!) at the Slow Club. Raymond is briefly seen next to him. - Another scene at the diner and this time both Jeffrey and Sandy don't touch their cherry cokes. - Frank says "This...is...it" when they arrive to Ben's, and that (THIS IS IT) is the name of the bar. - Many, many pills in the table at Ben's. Check the fat guy eating spaghetti as well. - Right before Raymond says "Here today, gone tomorrow" you can hear (though hardly and very low) Frank saying to Ben "A candy colored clown etc.". - Paul (Jack Nance) has a newspaper in his pocket. - Paul talking to Dorothy in the background right before the "I'll fuck anything that moves" moment. - There is a weird thing above Jeffrey's bed. There is even a closeup of it. - There's a cool ad of Smith & Wesson's revolvers behind the Yellow Man in his office. - A curious lamp with a bird in Sandy's house (seen in the "He put his disease in me" scene). - Many pink things in Sandy's room (lamp, pillow,...) and of course, the huge Montgomery Clift photo. - The Yellow Man spitting blood from his mouth when Jeffrey takes his gun. - Very subtle detail, Frank takes the blue velvet piece of cloth from Don's mouth and the robe from the bedroom (which is seen too when Jeffrey is on it). - A fly in Don's hand when Frank finds out where Jeffrey is hiding. I hope you enjoyed the list, check my future threads!
