QUOTE:Tardi conceived his female protagonist in contrast to the overtly sexualised Barberella, whose titillating escapades in outer space dominated Franco-Belgian comic culture at the time, setting the stories in the early 1900s further emphasised Adèle’s emancipation.
Interesting since the only thing (I've read) that's worth checking out by Tardi is Ici même, written by Barbarella's creator, Jean-Claude Forest.
The Adele Blanc-Sec books I have read (the first three) are marred by its too goofy for adults and too violent for children approach.

The Fifth Element is actually pretty good when you see it for what it really is, a bande dessinée, instead of a "regular" sci-fi movie. Which in itself is pretty funny as Star Wars is what most people think of when they hear sci-fi, and George Lucas apparently lifted quite a few elements from the Valerian comics, drawn by one of the men Besson hired to help visualize his movie.

I am in a Besson mood so I am going to give the Fifth Element a fresh watch on blu-ray, I haven't seen it since it first came out in 1997 and only then saw it on video tape.

I watched The Fifth Element last night on Blu-ray - firstly I have to say how stunning it looked in HD, despite being nearly 15 years old. This is true of most of Luc Besson's films, he uses light and colour extremely vividly. Anyway, I think it's pitch perfect in terms of intrigue, performance, storytelling and tone until Chris Tucker turns up and then it goes very wonky, I still enjoy it but tonally it's such a weird mash-up and the whole Jean-Paul Gaultier styling seems very dated all of a sudden. Still, all in all, it's a largely enjoyable Sci-fi frolic!

If you haven't read it, I recommend checking out The Incal by Moebius and Alejandro Jodorowsky.
And by checking out I mean from a library.

Do you get money when someone clicks on that link, or do they have to buy the movie for that to happen?

Yes, if you click on the link it counts towards the small CPR rate that Amazon offers but they pay out mainly on sales, my commission is currently 5% (I can't retire yet, unfortunately!)
