I've been trying to deconstruct TP as an exercise in screenwriting. I was amazed at the layers and levels involved. I seem to be able to find connections to the simplest acts with equally well constructed and hidden ideas. What is with the shoes? You can trace the idea of shoes from two-armed Mike in the great smokey mountains right down to why and where the homecoming queen died. The Shoe Tree has soul! How would TP play out if it were a Monk episode: the big reveal! We know that Josie shot Cooper while Senor Drool Cup shuffled along with Coop's glass of warm milk and that, in the series, Josie offered to put the coffee on to perk for Pete when Coop and Truman came to question the Martells. Did she put the Steelhead in the percolator and if so why? It seems far too petty an act to bother with. She must have known that they would only drink one sip, so why then would she do such a petty act? Simple! To cover the taste of something strongly flavored that she had slipped into the pot. What kind of mind-control, hallucenogenic, zombie-creating Bob-induced Mickey could Josie have slipped into their cuppa Joe that might explain their actions throughout the rest of the series? I need a wipe!
Why did Jacoby stay in Earring-ville Washington and worship all things Hawaiian. Well 40% of the trading company that first brought civilization to the local WERE native Hawaiians and Owayee, a portion of Oregon not near Bend, is still named for them. Sigh, the area given by Cooper to Diane as he entered TP the city was at the edge of Penn D'orville county so named 'cuz the local indiginous natives wore ponderous earrings.

Laura Palmer. Laura Palmer is the dark heart from which all of the TP events stem. In short, Laura Palmer is Twin Peaks.

My obsession is the entering of the Black Lodge in episode 29. The sycamore trees song the flashing lights and Cooper's face expression. That moves me deeper that anything else and I sometimes watch myself in a mirror in the dark and think about that scene. Edit: Also the ending of Ep. 14 (The world spins) but that's not as strong feeling or obsession (but it comes close) , although the scene itself is of similar quality.

That's nicely explained. Thanks for that Nefud. You ought to set up a thread on the matter.
Beauty is momentary in the mind - The fitful tracing of a portal; But in the flesh it is immortal. The body dies; the body's beauty lives. So evenings die, in their green going, A wave, interminably flowing. So gardens die, their meek breath scenting the cowl of winter, done repenting. So maidens die, to the auroral Celebration of a maiden's choral. Susanna's music touched the bawdy strings Of those white elders; but, escaping, Left only Death's ironic scraping. Now in its immortality, it plays On the clear viol of her memory, And makes a constant sacrement of praise. ('Peter Quince at the Clavier' by Wallace Stevens)

QUOTE: one of my favorite things about fwwm is that is pretty much spells out that bob is just a hunting dog for more powerful beings. it's the only time i've seen the "villian who seems to be pure evil isn't really that powerful" ending work well (are you listening, stephen king?) |

QUOTE:| QUOTE: for the sake of fun, could you tell me more about why you prefer lost highway? i think MD is a lot more...cryptic with its "the main character is dying and imagining things differently!" theme, which is more fun to me. plus, i like the soundtrack a lot more. | I think MD is a lot less cryptic with its Wizard of Oz dream (and you were there and you were there) theme.
LH looks a whole lot better, not a big fan of the soundtrack, the mood is better. And those are about the only reasons I watch a Lynch movie.
Universal came out with a DVD that looks like it should even though DVDbeaver thinks otherwise.

I have to agree with Booth, MD is relatively easy to put together. Story-telling in LH is much less kind to the viewer. I like them both but the difference is like pop-corn and dark chocolate.
