According to you, which one is the best?

Until now I've seen many movies with the dance theme (not exactly musicals then), but I was quite never full satisfied with them.

The titles that occur to me as representing the most remarkable projects are The Company, Billy Elliot, Dirty Dancing, Footlose, Hair, Cotton Club, Saturday night fever    and         Chicago  (the order is totally random).

The Red Shoes.
Not that I've seen it, but many people like it.

Singing in the Rain or Top Hat....All That Jazz was pretty freakin' awesome too, mainly because of Roy Schieder

An American In Paris is the only movie with dancing that I've seen that I would watch again, if only for that opening scene in his tiny apartment.  It's a musical, though, so I'm not sure how well it fits.

I think we have to be more discriminating about what's a "dance movie."  What about Turning Point?  That's about ballet dancers with some dancing.  Hairspray is a musical with some dancing.  Most musicals have dance numbers.  We could add West Side StoryDirty Dancing, Saturday Night Fever and Footloose are about dancing with dancing.  They're bona fide dance movies.  Just because there's one or two dance numbers in a movie doesn't a dance movie make. Oh and what's that hilarious movie I watched in a hotel room with Jessica Alba as a dancer in music videos???  That's a dance movie.

Oh, and how about Mad Hot Ballroom?!  THAT is a dance movie.  LOTS of dancing and one of the best even if it is a documentary.

Then there's that tango movie with Antonio Banderas.

Oh, how about Last Tango in Paris?  Is that a 'dance movie?'   And it's one of the best ever movies.

What about that great Almodovar film -- Talk to Her -- with the ballet dancer in a coma?  Does that qualify?

Strictly Ballroom...by some distance.

Although Saturday Night Fever must rate a mention as a culture defining flick.

Actually, Hairspray is a movie about a teenage TV dance show. It's NOT a musical, as no one sings in character. The Broadway musical BASED on the movie & movie based on the play (starring John Travolta in the Divine as mother Edna role) is another kettle of singin' dancin' fish.  Now,  Cry Baby would qualify as a musical (& is being also Broadway-ized)...

If any American girls who were prepubescent in 87-88 fail to say Dirty Dancing, they are dirty, dirty commies!

For me the bottle dance sequence from Fiddler on the Roof is the best dance scene in cinema ever.

It's due to music more than anything else but the music there is SO outstanding that it's quite enough :-)

The Hokey Pokey water bottle scene in A Dirty Shame is pretty special!!!  Tracey Ullman's finest moment! And Chris Isaak's reaction speaks volumes...

Watched this movie at a friend's house called, C-Walk: It's A Way Of Livin' which was quite entertaining.

Flashdance was amazing when I was 9 or 10, so I have to mention it, and I still have the vinyl for it! Dirty Dancing is obviously a classic too (although I would not watch something like that these days.)

I know that the Twin Peaks Pilot is not a dance movie, however, that scene where that guy is dancing across the hall way in the background is quite memorable and hilarious, and so I must mention that here.

I still love Hair.

FLASHDANCE WINS EVERY TIME!

Im the Queen of the 80's in my town.  Andi know its not a dance movie, but in Ferris Buellers Day Off, when Ferris sings 'Twist and Shout' on the float, you gotta dance!

I want to volunteer Shag for this thread. Scott Coffey is so damn cute. It was a noble attempt to recreate Dirty Dancing (same choreographer, mix of 60's and 80's tunes, teen sex/romance/coming of age.)

Speaking of Dirty Dancing, did anyone buy the 20th Anniversary edition and see this surprisingly raunchy deleted scene?

Imagine all the little girls that would've been thrust into an early puberty by witnessing that kind of complicated dry humping!
