....Mars.....

"Climate change hits Mars!!!"

Wonder if there's an Al Gore Martian asking other Martians to buy emission credits for their SUVs too?

http://www.timesonline.co.uk/tol/news/uk/article1720024.ece

Mars is being hit by rapid climate change and it is happening so fast that the red planet could lose its southern ice cap, writes Jonathan Leake.

Scientists from Nasa say that Mars has warmed by about 0.5C since the 1970s. This is similar to the warming experienced on Earth over approximately the same period.

Since there is no known life on Mars it suggests rapid changes in planetary climates could be natural phenomena.

The mechanism at work on Mars appears, however, to be different from that on Earth. One of the researchers, Lori Fenton, believes variations in radiation and temperature across the surface of the Red Planet are generating strong winds.

In a paper published in the journal Nature, she suggests that such winds can stir up giant dust storms, trapping heat and raising the planet’s temperature.

Fenton’s team unearthed heat maps of the Martian surface from Nasa’s Viking mission in the 1970s and compared them with maps gathered more than two decades later by Mars Global Surveyor. They found there had been widespread changes, with some areas becoming darker.

When a surface darkens it absorbs more heat, eventually radiating that heat back to warm the thin Martian atmosphere: lighter surfaces have the opposite effect. The temperature differences between the two are thought to be stirring up more winds, and dust, creating a cycle that is warming the planet.

-----

Maybe the MU (Martian Union) should do what the EU is suggesting with their Martian cows too:

BARMY Euro MPs are demanding new laws to stop cows and sheep PARPING.

Their call came after the UN said livestock emissions were a bigger threat to the planet than transport.

The MEPs have asked the European Commission to “look again at the livestock question in direct connection with global warming”.

The official EU declaration demands changes to animals’ diets, to capture gas emissions and recycle manure.

So no "Hmmmmm"s from anyone regarding this??

Global warming is happening on Mars too - a planet that has no human life, no refineries, no cars, and nothing like what Earth has and yet the temperatures have risen about the same as earth's.

We got one person in the article who says the warming is different, but we are technically comparing apples and oranges here - Earth has people, water, etc, and Mars has red soil, some frozen water, and a few mechanical parts, no people, no humans, maybe some Martians, nad yet both planets have rising temperatues at roughly the same amount.

if humans were the true reason for warming, then would not the increase be higher over here on Earth because of our behavior? Or could it be just the Sun punching out something we have yet to uncover or understand?

Where's Al when you need him to answer this?

Oh, man, we are so like dooooooooomed!  So much for those predictions that made in the early 60s about colonies on Mars in the 21st century.  We're doomed.

QUOTE:

I refrained from responding at first because I had nothing to really add on this one...mainly because I think that no matter what discussions we get in on this, most people either see black or white. Very few people are seeing the gray area in all this. It's either "OMG HUMANS RUIN THE PLANET!" or "OMG LIBERALS ARE MAKING STUFF UP!" When in reality, there are numerous factors at work that tripe like Al Gore's film completely detract from.

(An aside: I appreciate the concept behind making a documentary on the state of the planet and the things we are and aren't affecting. But that film wasn't doing any of that, and quite frankly, it wasn't a documentary as far as I'm concerned. It was a blatant in-your-face misrepresentation of a lot of scientific research that is still based purely on conjecture. And I think on the opposite side of the coin is just as much conjecture about how humans have nothing to do with "global warming" and it's all a natural process. And now every time a new piece of scientific data surfaces, it's nothing but a hot cup of coffee being tossed in our faces over and over... "HA! See? Stupid tree-huggers..." "HA! See? Stupid conservatives...")

Now we have Mars. And now Mars is going to be used as a direct comparison to Earth and regardless of the various differences between the planets, all we're going to hear is "OMG MARS IS WARMING TOO!" and that will be expected to end all discussions of issues here on this planet. In reality we can learn a lot from checking out Mars's wares. It's nice to have that bit of comparison to show that hey, here's how our planets sort of operate and the similarities are worth doing some research on. But in no way should we assume that Mars is experiencing exactly what we're experiencing. It's just more scientific data to chew on. I'm personally very interested in seeing what we can learn from scoping out Mars's historical statistics in comparison to current data and whatever else we find from here on out. I'm guessing it will be a piece to our big planetial puzzle.

*sigh*

I find myself wishing on a daily basis that Gore's film had never been made. I had a much easier time talking about environmental science and getting people to consider their actions before he made a mess of it all. At the end of the day, humans affect this planet in many many ways, some of which we really ought to stop doing or consider some alternatives to keep from possibly creating irreversible damage for future generations. But are we causing a global climate change? That's not for us or Al or George to say. Instead, let's let the scientists keep working to build data and maybe there will be some light shed eventually. Some definite, non-conjecture light. Until that point, it does us no good to keep lobbing  pointed barbs at one another. Why not decide to reduce vehicle emissions because it's just not good to be breathing it? Why not recycle materials because it's the responsible thing to do? Why not find places other than our rivers to store our wastes because it's just plain disgusting to float our poo in with our fish and water? Thanks, Uncle Al, for ruining the environment for the rest of us...

Dang Amanda, you are a voice of reason. I dig your evenhanded approach. And as I recyle ( yes I recycle ) You have more of an effect on me and what I do, than what I hear from any of the self proclaimed experts!  Hey I am moving to Novato, Marin in a month, and if you don't mind old half way conservative guys , maybe we could have a drink some time. Don'y woorry, I'm in my fifties and have no silly designs on a young gal- just a casual friendship.

and I agree with Amanda too. I've always stated something very simple - global warming is happening, and we may very well be the reason for it, BUT THAT THERE IS NO SOLID PROOF. There's not enough long-standing data to truly prove that we are the TRUE problem. And as long as Al Gore tells us to buy emission credits, and what's her face tells us to use 1 square of toilet paper (while she uses 10), and as long as I continually hear that WE are the problem, I will always argue differently in hopes that people realize that the science behind global warming isn't very strong.

I've gotten so jaded over the months as I've continually been told to "shut up" (not by anyone here) because global warming was "real" and that every scientist agrees - knowing full well this was a bunch of rhetorical BS.

So now, having proof that an uninhabited planet is also having a warming trend simply indicates that everyone needs to relax a bit about the "the sky is falling because we are horrible humans for polluting our earth" and wait for the science to find the proof, or wait until the Earth goes back on a cooling cycle, which it will do on its own.

Meanwhile, I agree....there is lots we can do to help improve our environment. Not throwing chemicals into water for one. And working to improve gas mileage and better fuel options for our air and pocket books and national security. All of which will help us in the long run.

But this recent "sky is falling" fear because we've had some big hurricanes and because of Al Gore's movie, enough is enough already. Hopefully the realization that an uninhabited planet like Mars is also going through a global warming will help people realize that things aren't so dire and could (and probably are) be natural.

Yes I agree with your sentiments exactly on this one.

I pity the public who are forced to listen to such loud, polarised opinions on this topic.  Expert opinions, Facts and stats are used and abused by those trying to push their extreme agendas.

Personally I think if we're not sure about what effect we're having, it'd make sense to at least move things in the right direction - look for more renewable energy sources, cut back on carbon emissions, recycle more, and so on.  It's about time we put more emphasis on this approach.

But, I disagree with some in my own country who are calling for 60% reduction in cabon emissions, simply as a vote-grabbing, knee-jerk reaction to Gore's doco.  They haven't done their homework, have only listened to the 1 alarmist side of the debate, and having factored in the economic viability of our country(who produce about 1% of the world's carbon emissions) taking drastic action when much of the world will simply increase theirs.

95% of what we hear in Australia is panic talk about Global Warming, so I found it refreshing today to hear this opinion presented by one of our most popular commentators Alan Jones.  He's a conservative, and presents a fairly polarised opinion, but it's an interesting perspective on this topic rarely heard in Australia:

Climate Change 1 May 2007

Print E-mail
Talk about climate change everywhere.

It's become a religion.

But no one seems too concerned about the truth.

The fact is there is no truth.

There is no unified scientific view about whether or not there is even such a thing as climate change.

And then on the question of greenhouse gas emissions, there is no unified scholarship on whether that produces climate change, even if such change were a reality.

Indeed there is a body of respected scholarship which argues that if there is such a thing as climate change, it is inspired by solar factors, not greenhouse gases.

Well now I see that the leading hurricane forecaster in the United States, would he know anything about climate - he said at the weekend that global ocean currents, not human produced carbon dioxide, were responsible for global warming.

The fellow's name is William Gray.

He's a Colorado State University researcher.

And he said the earth may begin to cool on its own in five to ten years.

Now you might recall all that stuff by Sir Nicholas Stern.

The economic effects of climate change.

And now to continue the religious climate change revival, Kevin Rudd is going to have an inquiry headed by an academic to calculate the economic cost to Australia of action versus inaction in relation to climate change.

Now you'll recall that's exactly what this fellow Sir Nicholas Stern did for Tony Blair, which prompted one of the world's leading environmental economists, Dr Richard Tol of Hamburg and Carnegie Mellon Universities to say "If a student of mine were to hand in this report (the Stern report) as a Master's thesis, perhaps if I were in a good mood I'd give him a D for diligence.  But more likely I'd give him an F for fail."

Now this is now what Kevin Rudd's banging on about.

And indeed on climate change we get all this Armageddon-like reporting, alarmist stuff, scientific exaggeration and rampant overstating of the case.

So we're going to be destroyed by drought or incinerated by heat, or we'll starve for lack of a drink.

Of course, we've been there before.

I mentioned to you earlier this year another report which gained similar widespread currency, telling us there were ominous signs that the earth's weather patterns had begun to change dramatically and we were going to see all sorts of drastic consequences.

A decline in food production.

The great wheat-producing lands of the world would be under siege.

It was an advance sign of fundamental changes in the world's weather, so great that meteorologists were hard pressed to keep up with it, climatologists were pessimistic, and political leaders were urged to take action yesterday.

And as with the Kevin Rudd announcement yesterday of an inquiry into the economic consequences of doing nothing, this report warned that the longer the plan is delayed, the more difficult it will be to cope with climate change.

The only problem is this was the headline story in Newsweek magazine on April 28, 1975 and the story was about global cooling, not global warming.

Well back to America's leading hurricane forecaster who last week had harsh words for researchers and politicians who said man-made greenhouse gases were responsible for global warming.

He said "They're blaming it all on humans which is crazy.  We are not the cause of it."

Indeed, he said in the past 40 years the number of serious hurricanes making landfall on the US Atlantic coast had declined, even though carbon dioxide levels had risen.

And he said increasing levels of carbon dioxide would not produce more or stronger hurricanes.

He criticised the former US Vice President Al Gore as a gross alarmist for making the documentary "An Inconvenient Truth".

Dr Gray said, and remember he's the United States' leading hurricane forecaster, he said that politics and research into global warming had created "almost an industry that had frightened the public and overwhelmed dissenting voices."

He said research arguing that human beings were causing global warming was mush, based on unreliable computer models that could not possibly take into account the hundreds of factors that influenced the weather.

And he said little understood ocean currents were behind a decades long warming cycle.

He disputed assertions that greenhouse gases could raise global temperatures as much as some scientists predicted.

Now Dr Gray's comments were reported by Dan Elliott in Denver for the Murdoch press.

They did not get the front page coverage that was given to Sir Nicholas Stern and everything that's followed him.

It may well be we are not in long term danger from global warming but in very real danger from overstating the global warming case.

After all, the Newsweek story of 1975 about global cooling tells us we weren't averse to overstating the case 32 years ago.

Wouldn't it be awesome if Mars (the red planet) experienced global warming while Earth (the blue planet) experienced global cooling?

I read that algore is critical of the coverage of entertainment types at the expense of real news. Of course algore plays to that group with his embrace of noted experts like Cameron Diaz and company and uses them to further his campaign. Now he is on yet another jet feuled wasteful crisscross to boost his new book on politics! Sheesh Dude, please place that large jet in a hanger for awhile and give the planet 's atmosphere a break. And turn off a few lights in your many mansions to give the grid a breather.

Hey, Raymond, welcome to the neighborhood! When ya get to Novato, give me a PM. We'll go pop a brewski at The Old Western or something.

As to topic, don't forget that Al's little film ditty was an InfoMercial for his London-based 'Carbon Credits' company, from which he stands to make a fortune. And yes, isn't it funny how he tromps around in a private jet. He just came to little ole Liberal Marin and was fawned over, but he arrived in a bizjet and was brought in in a limo with escorts. All to tell us that we now have no 'Reason'.

Think I'll move to Mars now that the icecaps will be melting. Might get a good deal on some future oceanfront property!

Thanks John, that sounds good. You know I was Jerry Garcia's and the Dead's substitute driver back in the eighties( 83-84.) I remember his daughter Annabelle and I turning off the Dead and playing " Ghost Busters" instead. She was a sweet kid. The Dead were a great bunch of guys but we liked some other music more. I hope to be in Novato by early July. I expect to take a ride up to Amanda's neck of the woods, I like her more every year I'm here at the TPG ! We will have a " flapjaw" session : )

As Jerry used to say " Locks Rich "

We watched THE UNIVERSE on History Channel last night, and the first episode was about the Sun.

During the show, they talked about how our eletro-magnetic force around the earth protects us from radiation, etc. And that solar storms and changes in the sun, etc can directly affect us on earth, and that the sun goes through cycles. A big solar storm from the Earth could destroy modern technology, they explained. We've all heard it before.

But one of the things that stood out to me was the fact that radiation often hits the poles because of how the field works (won't go into detail becaus I can't do it justice). So in other words, if there's an increase in radiation and energy from the sun, there will also be an increae of radiation and energy on the poles. An increase of energy on the poles could result in an increase of warmth, making the ice caps melt, right? Throw in the disappearing ozone layer at the south pole and well....

Now they did not specifically say that there is a surge of energy coming from the sun right now, but they also wouldn't know. NOAA has only been watching the sun for 40-50 years (if that) and it would be impossible to determine what teh sun was doing 100 years ago or 200 years ago to the earth directly.

Interesting, nonetheless.

I don't like Johnny Depp (Johnny? Isn't he a grown man!) either. Newly culitvated Madonna-esque accent. Hair in the eyes. Sunglasses over the eyes. I'm so serious. I have gravitas. No, I don't smile. Especially on the Red Carpet.

But speaking of inconvenient truths, maybe there's HOPE! The Cold War, having ended long ago with the break up of the Soviet Union has freed up Russians from their previous time consuming project of crushing the West. There's time to devote to more meaningful projects like saving the planet. Hows about a simple plan to fix it all?

This article, like so much else, leaves me craving wisdom from some arena. Sometimes I get this icky sticky feeling that the experts of today's world will be viewed with bemusement by future generations. Maybe it is not unlike the experts of the 14th century who tried to solve the Bubonic Plague by burning the Jews they believed had poisoned the wells. Humans. Sigh.

The Russian plan...

RIA Novosti

Russia knows how to prevent global warming - academic

30/05/2007 20:47 MOSCOW, May 30 (RIA Novosti) - Russian scientists have found a way to prevent global warming of the Earth, the director of the Global Climate and Ecology Institute said Wednesday.

Russian Academy of Sciences Academic Yury Izrael told a news conference that the method envisions air spraying of a sulfur-containing aerosol in lower stratosphere layers at a height of 10-14 kilometers (six to 10 miles). Sulfur drops would then reflect solar radiation.

According to scientists, one million tons of aerosol sprayed above the planet would make possible a reduction of solar radiation by 0.5-1%, and a reduction of air temperature by 1-1.5 degrees Celsius.

Unseasonably hot May weather with temperatures at 32.1 degrees Celsius (89.7 degrees Fahrenheit) beating a 116-year-old maximum has already seen last year's energy consumption for this time of year surpassed by about 8% in Moscow and 12% in St. Petersburg, a spokeswoman for the UES electricity monopoly said earlier.

Izrael said the method demands more detailed development, and that a relevant decision on the international level should be made for it to come into force.

However, the academic said the method is not an alternative to measures to fight climate change envisioned by the Kyoto Protocol, which contains commitments by some countries [...and I'm not naming any names...] on specific volumes of greenhouse gas emission reductions.

"I don't want any contradiction of the Kyoto Protocol, but in parallel with existing methods, cheaper ones should be developed. I am advocating that work be conducted simultaneously on several methods," Izrael said.

He also said the Russian scientists' method will make the fight against warming faster and cheaper. "It is also good that it can be stopped at any moment," Izrael said.

The Russian academic said global temperature in the coming 100 years could rise by 1.4-4 degrees Celsius, which, he said, will cause droughts, floods and cyclones. He said Russia could face the extinction of 20-30% of its animals and plants if temperatures rise by 2 degrees Celsius.

However, Izrael said the current high temperatures in Moscow are not connected with a global climate change.

"Any fact, even the most acute should not be directly linked to climate change, but should be considered as part of temperature fluctuations," he said. [Uhhh, okay]

In October of 2003, here's what academic Izrael had to say...

The Russian scientists were even more resolute. Yuri Izrael, Putin's most influential science adviser, declared: "All the scientific evidence seems to support the same general conclusions, that the Kyoto Protocol is overly expensive, ineffective and based on bad science."

Where are the great men and women of our time? Are they sucked into souless politics and left neutered by that construct?

We need some intellectual, moral leaders and I see none of any stripe on the horizon. The best we can evidently hope for is second string half way real people. Please whoever you are fill the vaccuum. Then again our faulty modern sh-t detecters probably will eliminate that type of cat out of hand.

Easy now algore, Jimmie Carter had the legislation to combat our coming ice age in 1979. Seems we may actually be heading for another ice age folks.

Forget warming - beware the new ice age

Lawrence Solomon, Financial Post

Published: Friday, June 15, 2007

In the 1970s, leading scientists claimed that the world was threatened by an era of global cooling.

Based on what we've learned this decade, says George Kukla, those scientists - and he was among them -- had it right. The world is about to enter another Ice Age.

Dr. Kukla, in 1972 a member of the Czechoslovakian Academy of Sciences and a pioneer in the field of astronomical forcing, became a central figure in convincing the United States government to take the dangers of climate change seriously. In January of that year, he and another geologist, Robert Matthews of Brown University, convened what would become a historic conference of top European and American investigators in Providence, R.I. The working conference's theme: "The Present Interglacial: How and When will it End?"

Later that year, Drs. Kukla and Matthews highlighted the dangers of global cooling in Science magazine and, because of the urgency of the matter, in December they also alerted President Richard Nixon in a joint letter. The conference had reached a consensus, their letter stated, that "a global deterioration of climate, by order of magnitude larger than any hitherto experienced by civilized mankind, is a very real possibility and indeed may be due very soon. The cooling has natural cause and falls within the rank of processes which produced the last ice age."

The White House reacted swiftly to the letter, which described "substantially lowered food production" and "extreme weather anomalies," such as killer frosts and floods, as well as a warning that the Soviet Union might already be in the lead in preparing for the climate disturbances to come. By February 1973, the State Department had established a Panel on the Present Interglacial, which advised Drs. Kukla and Matthews that it "was seized of the matter."

Soon, numerous other government agencies were drawn in -- the issue was seen to be of paramount importance -- and by 1974, a federal government report, A United States Climate Program, cited evidence of the gathering storm, including:

"A killing winter freeze, followed by a severe summer heat wave in the United States.

"Drought in the Soviet Union producing a 12% shortfall in their grain production in 1972, forcing the country to purchase grain abroad, which in turn reduced world grain reserves and helped drive up food prices.

"Collapse of the Peruvian anchovy harvest in late 1972 and early 1973, related to fluctuations in the Pacific Ocean currents and atmospheric circulation, impacted world supplies of fertilizer, the soybean market and prices of other protein feed stocks.

"The anomalously low precipitation in the U.S. Pacific Northwest during the winter of 1972-73 depleted water-reservoir storage by an amount equivalent to an amount of water required to generate more than 7% of the electric energy for the region."

By 1975, the first of numerous bills, such as the "National Climate Program Act of 1975," was introduced to establish a co-ordinated national program of climate research, monitoring, prediction and contingency-planning analysis. Much congressional testimony spoke of the inadequacy of climate research and the need for preparedness. Meanwhile, the failure of the Soviet Union's wheat crop (and a subsequent high-profile U.S. wheat deal), the severe winter of 1976-77 and El Nino's influence on climate became dinner-table talk, heightening the government's desire to predict the climate. In September, 1979, President Jimmy Carter signed the National Climate Program Act into law, in aid of predicting future climate and combating global cooling. That act has now been enlisted in the effort to counter global warming

Alarmist global warming claims melt under scientific scrutiny
Chicago Sun Times June 30,2007
In his new book, The Assault on Reason, Al Gore pleads, "We must stop tolerating the rejection and distortion of science. We must insist on an end to the cynical use of pseudo-studies known to be false for the purpose of intentionally clouding the public's ability to discern the truth." Gore repeatedly asks that science and reason displace cynical political posturing as the central focus of public discourse.

If Gore really means what he writes, he has an opportunity to make a difference by leading by example on the issue of global warming.

A cooperative and productive discussion of global warming must be open and honest regarding the science. Global warming threats ought to be studied and mitigated, and they should not be deliberately exaggerated as a means of building support for a desired political position.

Many of the assertions Gore makes in his movie, 'An Inconvenient Truth,' have been refuted by science, both before and after he made them. Gore can show sincerity in his plea for scientific honesty by publicly acknowledging where science has rebutted his claims.

For example, Gore claims that Himalayan glaciers are shrinking and global warming is to blame. Yet the September 2006 issue of the American Meteorological Society's Journal of Climate reported, "Glaciers are growing in the Himalayan Mountains, confounding global warming alarmists who recently claimed the glaciers were shrinking and that global warming was to blame."

Gore claims the snowcap atop Africa's Mt. Kilimanjaro is shrinking and that global warming is to blame. Yet according to the November 23, 2003, issue of Nature magazine, "Although it's tempting to blame the ice loss on global warming, researchers think that deforestation of the mountain's foothills is the more likely culprit. Without the forests' humidity, previously moisture-laden winds blew dry. No longer replenished with water, the ice is evaporating in the strong equatorial sunshine."

Gore claims global warming is causing more tornadoes. Yet the United Nations Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change stated in February that there has been no scientific link established between global warming and tornadoes.

Gore claims global warming is causing more frequent and severe hurricanes. However, hurricane expert Chris Landsea published a study on May 1 documenting that hurricane activity is no higher now than in decades past. Hurricane expert William Gray reported just a few days earlier, on April 27, that the number of major hurricanes making landfall on the U.S. Atlantic coast has declined in the past 40 years. Hurricane scientists reported in the April 18 Geophysical Research Letters that global warming enhances wind shear, which will prevent a significant increase in future hurricane activity.

Gore claims global warming is causing an expansion of African deserts. However, the Sept. 16, 2002, issue of New Scientist reports, "Africa's deserts are in 'spectacular' retreat . . . making farming viable again in what were some of the most arid parts of Africa."

Gore argues Greenland is in rapid meltdown, and that this threatens to raise sea levels by 20 feet. But according to a 2005 study in the Journal of Glaciology, "the Greenland ice sheet is thinning at the margins and growing inland, with a small overall mass gain." In late 2006, researchers at the Danish Meteorological Institute reported that the past two decades were the coldest for Greenland since the 1910s.

Gore claims the Antarctic ice sheet is melting because of global warming. Yet the Jan. 14, 2002, issue of Nature magazine reported Antarctica as a whole has been dramatically cooling for decades. More recently, scientists reported in the September 2006 issue of the British journal Philosophical Transactions of the Royal Society Series A: Mathematical, Physical, and Engineering Sciences, that satellite measurements of the Antarctic ice sheet showed significant growth between 1992 and 2003. And the U.N. Climate Change panel reported in February 2007 that Antarctica is unlikely to lose any ice mass during the remainder of the century.

Each of these cases provides an opportunity for Gore to lead by example in his call for an end to the distortion of science. Will he rise to the occasion? Only time will tell.

Hype not working on most people.

'Scepticism' over climate claims

The public believes the effects of global warming on the climate are not as bad as politicians and scientists claim, a poll has suggested.

The Ipsos Mori poll of 2,032 adults - interviewed between 14 and 20 June - found 56% believed scientists were still questioning climate change.

There was a feeling the problem was exaggerated to make money, it found.

The Royal Society said most climate scientists believed humans were having an "unprecedented" effect on climate.

The survey suggested that terrorism, graffiti, crime and dog mess were all of more concern than climate change.

People should not be misled by those that exploit the complexity of the issue, seeking to distort the science
Sir David Read
Royal Society

Ipsos Mori's head of environmental research, Phil Downing, said the research showed there was "still a lot to do" in encouraging "low-carbon lifestyles".

"We are alive to climate change and very few people actually reject out of hand the idea the climate is changing or that humans have had at least some part to play in this," he added.

"However, a significant number have many doubts about exactly how serious it really is and believe it has been over-hyped."

People had been influenced by counter-arguments, he said.

Royal Society vice-president Sir David Read said: "People should not be misled by those that exploit the complexity of the issue, seeking to distort the science and deny the seriousness of the potential consequences of climate change.
