Great topic! Some of my favorite memories are of my best friend and I in 5th and 6th grade staying up all night scaring ourselves watching terrifically grainy horror movies on VHS.
Near Dark, Psycho, Sleepaway Camp, Graveyard Shift (the vampire movie, not the Stephen King one) Happy Birthday to Me, American Gothic, Pet Sematary 1&2, Evil Dead 2, Ravenous, Company of Wolves, Hellraiser 1-3, The Hunger, Lair of the White Worm, Creepshow 2, Cube 1&2, The Dark Half, The Prophecy, Fright Night 1 & 2, Waxwork 1 & 2, Night of the Creeps, Student Bodies, Dead Alive, Pumpkinhead, Basket Case, Carrie, The Fly, The Shining... With very few exceptions, I think the horror genre has slid down the crapper.

Fantastic choices, Angel! The first time I saw Pumpkinhead, with that creepy old woman...yikes. Some of my faves (which include all of those you listed) are Halloween and Halloween 2--it's my opinion that those two are the best. Twilight Zone: The Movie. Christine. Night of the Living Dead *The 1990 remake*. The Lady In White *it's cheesy, but I still love that movie, and it still creeps me out*. American Werewolf in London *even though parts of it are insanely funny*. Evil Dead. Poltergeist. Sleepwalkers. Misery. Thriller *even though it is a short film*. Silence of the Lambs. Phantom of the Opera *the original*. The Ring. Jaws. Whew! Those are what I come with at the top of my head for now. :)

There are favorites for nostalgia reasons and favorites for scary reasons. Nostalgia: Poltergeist #1 only, Nightmare on Elm Street 1 & 4, The Changeling (although it could've been a "thriller"), Twilight Zone the Movie and was it Sandman with the kid who got his mouth sewn shut??? Scary: The Ring, House of 1000 Corpses (God I love that movie), Hellraiser original only, Saw kind of creeped me out a little...

If I remember correctly, I found Suspiria to be rather good. Alien counts, right? Jaws, Poltergeist, Halloween, and The Thing, are all horror movies I like, though they don't really scare me.
With very few exceptions, I think the horror genre never made it out of the crapper.

Oh yeah! I live for seeing horror movies. The new Halloween was excellent. Seeing as Halloween is more of a thriller instead of a slasher film I was a little leary about seeing it, but it was right on!
My daughter just got into the "rent scary movies and watch with your friends" stage and I told her all you have to do is side with the bad guy and be scared no more! She'll never admit it, but she loves me.

I'm probably the only one who thought Nightmare 7 was the best of the series, though I like the original and the threequel despite their 80's cheese. The Halloween series (minus 3) was very big with me as a kid. I still haven't seen The Thing, I don't know what's wrong with me.

Wonder what was going through their heads when they came out with Halloween 3? The rest are good after that, not as great at the first two, but good nonetheless. I remember a movie that scared the bejeepers out of me when I was kid...had a big snake in it...Dreamscape? Some others: Alien, Carrie, The Sixth Sense (watched that at like 2 in the morning--was quite jumpy afterwards, not much sleep that night), IT.

Mikey was burnt to a crisp at the end of II, and series financier Moustapha Akkad wanted to continue the series as an anthology (ala Tales From The Darkside). The third film was terrible, so they brought back The Shape. Though the sequels after that are kind of all over the place, the series never got as bad as, say, Nightmare 4-6. Oh, I'm blocking Resurrection again. Never mind.

Ummm, no one's mentioned the scariest film of all time, the mighty Texas Chainsaw Massacre?! The sequel is pretty fine too (Dennis Hopper as a saw totin' Texas Ranger). Please DO avoid the remaining sequels & any of the recent remakes.

IMO, Sloth from The Goonies was scarier.

The one film that fills me with a genuine sense of horror is The Break Up, with Vince Vaugn and Jennifer Aniston. Couldn't sleep for days after that one. *shudders*

1) THE EXORCIST (absolutely the scariest film of our time: a masterpiece) 2) THE ALIEN SAGA (my worst nightmare...) 3) SHINING (does moquette on the floor in the scene with the blood that floods the corridor remind you anything?) 4) JOHN CARPENTER'S THE THING (a variation on the theme of an alien and a isolated place) 5) DARIO ARGENTO'S PROFONDO ROSSO (I don't know how this title has been translated into english, maybe DEEP RED...Anyway Dario is Asia Argento's father and the greatest horror and thriller filmaker in Italy and one of the best in the world...) 6) DAVID CRONENBERG'S THE FLY (what if our cells met a fly?) 7) SAM RAIMI'S THE HOUSE (splatter reigns!) 8) ROMERO'S DAWN OF THE EVIL DEAD (the italian title is ZOMBIE... BTW, when I was 12 I had the videogame too ...) 9) IT (no comment needed...Uhm...Maybe one: keep away from McDonald's!) 10) THE JAPANESE RINGU SAGA ( the original is better than THE RING) And at the 11th place I'd choose....MY EVERYDAY LIFE (it's not a film, but don't meet me in a cul-de-sac guys..... )

I want to be scared but I don't want to be completely grossed out. I really dislike torture films so Wolf Creek (which horrified me) is not my cup of tea. Hostel = wouldn't even think of seeing it. Scream and Halloween (both 1s) are my type of horror. To be terrifying in the light of day, as in the scene where Jamie Lee Curtis is walking home from school with Michael Myers hiding behind hedges = that's a feat! The opening scene of Halloween was a favorite of mine as was the opening popcorn telephone scene from Scream. About a year ago, Requiem (where has he been anyway?) had recommended a series of great horror films for me to watch and I did. I liked them all. May, Suspira, The Devil's Backbone, and Ginger Snaps were a few of them I remember. Suspira not so much as the others because it seemed like a production designer's film more than a writer's film. It was wonderfully atmospheric but not too scary and not too involving. Pretty though. Still for the scariest movie of all time I'd have to go with In Cold Blood even if it wasn't a horror film. The Exorcist is a close second. Rosemary's Baby was pretty good too. Psycho too.
Dating back to the 50s, the first and only film to scare me so much I had to walk out of the theater - the original Blob. Something about that growing oozing blob on a stick that terrified me.

Strange contrast between the movie and the theme tune. Composed by Burt Bacharach. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y_SsrZAAIJk
