No, but then again I really dislike alien stories. I blame Whitley Streiber for that.

His books have never scared me. Someone told me once that Communion was the most frightening book they ever read. I asked them to stop wasting precious oxygen. I just found Streiber's books to be mind-numbingly banal and completely overhyped to the point of insanity. He made aliens boring. How the fuck does one do that?

i found the first one suspenseful as a kid, but then again back then i was taking the whole account as Gods Honest Truth i saw one on the shelf the other day that wxplained itself as "a fictionalized account of stuff aliens told me was going to happen" and holy shit strieber really found a gimmick and ran like hell

I blew my "OMG this shit is real and FREAKY" wad with Amityville Horror when I was ten. After that I was really skeptical about anything purported to be a "real life account" of supernatural/alien shit. So when I read Communion in junior high, it was met with nothing more than a "Gimme a fucking break" reaction. Which is a bummer because I think I would have liked to be freaked out more by Streiber's stuff as a kid.

i remember specifically the part there strieber heard a pattern of three distinct knocks on the wall outside his house, three floors up. that's the kind of thing that was like "oh shiiiiiit" when i was younger but is hilariously calculated now that i look back on it

House of Leaves gave me a chill that I used to associate only with Lovecraft and Jorge Luis Borges. It was the part where the house starts to grow- on the inside- and the wall slides away from where the bookshelf is.
Don't know nuthin bout Twilight, but I heard that the author is Mormon and is trying to teach the dangers of sex through the metaphor of the vampire. This was a criticism, but I think that's been the vampire's job in literature since the Victorians and Dracula, Varney the Vampire, The Vampyre, Carmilla etc.

Of course the real question is which series is hotter; Twilight or Harry Potter? Someone should have a vote. In other news for any lower Queen Anne would be Twilight fans, we have all four in the house as of 11:20 local time, first time and won't last long!

We've had a copy on display for about six days now. Has the magic moment passed?

Just saw the Twilight film. My first exposure to the story! I thought it was a sweet teen romance and lurrrrved the cinematography & PNW setting, of course.
Don't see what the fuss is about the actor who played Edward. He has the weirdest profile (very weak chin and downturned nose but with a protruding forehead.)
But I loved the erotic tension in the scene where they tried making out. That's what the vampire story is all about! Lust, risk, surrender.
A few interesting twists on the tradition, which is the most you can expect. I'll watch the sequel, for sure (but I won't be reading the books.)

I've never understood the fuss over Robert Pattinson either. I think he's extremely goofy-looking to be real honest. I spent almost the entire film laughing at it and then doing an MST3K number on it. It's not terrible, but it's just ridiculous. The sparkly effect? Oh my god I thought I was going to die from lack of oxygen, I laughed so hard. "THIS IS THE SKIN OF A MONSTER!" doesn't quite have the same ring when the speaker looks like he just came out of a gay rave. I think the film managed to take the emotional/mental abuse aspect of Bella & Edward's relationship down a bajillion notches, so it wasn't even noticeable like it is in the books, plus the film made Bella seem like less of an incompetent human being. So I have to give the film kudos for that...it made me like the love story better. But aside from that...huh. I am concerned for how the second film is going to come across. I'll tell you right now, since you haven't read the book, that two chapters in, Edward and the entire Cullen family disappear and all but the last couple chapters are nothing but Bella and Jacob. So I wonder how much the screenwriter is going to change that to break up the monotony of that shit. I really hate the Edward-Bella-Jacob love triangle. It's awful. It's two mentally and emotionally abusive young men tormenting a weak, insipid girl for three full books. *headdesk*

And then that mentally abusive triangle gets even worse in book 3 (which i am halfway through now). i just don't like the Jacob character whatsoever. I have a feeling that the writers will stretch out the beginning and end of the book into about 2/3 of the movie, and only have 1/3 in which Edward is not around (except in voice, flashbacks, dreams, etc).

i am just a little worried about how many teenage girls read this series and the (probably significant) portion of them learning behavior from them, but eh.

I figured out who the actor that plays Edward reminds me of and why it was bothering me so much. The up and coming director and our Fest brother, Josh!
That's it. I'm giving him a goth makeover. I hope that's okay with Susan ;)

I'll try to incorporate gay rave body glitter into the look to make it complete.

After a conversation on the set of Mulholland Dr., David Lynch said Josh knew more about himself than he did. It allegedly freaked him out a little.

This is as much of the film as I've seen, and the only way I will ever try to watch it.

I've heard the Rifftrax is awesome. Must get it ASAP. :) I rewatched the movie this morning while working from home and it's just funnier and funnier every time I see it. I have to pause for laughter every time Jasper comes on the screen. Alice and Jasper were by far my favorite part of all four books, and I love Alice in the film but Jasper...sweet baby jesus, that shit is hysterical, yo. He looks like he's in a perpetual state of shock. *BIG EYES* I do have to say though...I reread the first book again before rewatching the film. And while the film is ridiculous as all hell, I really think they did a damn good job of making Bella and Edward's relationship seem less creepy and abusive and more realistic in terms of two people falling in love. Bella wasn't this drooling moron who followed Edward's every word, and Edward was more protective and concerned than manipulative and overbearing. Plus I appreciate that they made Billy Quay all Native-American-mysterious rather than a cranky old coot, and Charlie in the film feels much more appropriate to me than Charlie in the books. Eh. I still take issue with Stephenie Meyer inventing her own vampire canon, as I think it just ends up feeling really ridiculous and you don't feel much like you're watching a vampire flick, and I really think we need to be watching a vampire flick instead of the film we got. The danger to Bella never felt real because you never really got to see actual vampire stuff. Just this sparkly skin (THIS IS THE SKIN OF A KILLER OMG) and some flying/running shit. Honestly though, and to be fair to the film, it didn't exactly have great material to work with. They made of it what they could and I think for what it is, it's not bad...it's just...silly. :)

Bonus points for the Twin Peaks references. Wish I had seen it with the Rifftrax. Next time I want to intelligently rail on a movie, I'll be prepared.
I can only imagine sales of that messy white Manic Panic glitter jelly at Hot Topic have skyrocketed, along with Clearasil, from already acne-prone pubescent slathering it all over their faces and chests. Sexxxxy!!! Spooky!!!

Would you say the Bella and Edward dynamic is more abusive/creepy than Angela Chase and Jordan Catalano? (I'm in the middle of a MSCL marathon.)

In the books? Yeah. Way more. Because to an extent, you can watch MSCL and know exactly where Angela and Jordan are coming from. It's very true to teen romance, and Angela is aware the entire time that Jordan is kind of a cock but she keeps giving him a pass because she really digs him. With Bella and Edward, it's definitely a control thing that borders on mental abuse. Edward cows Bella so many times, and Jacob does too. At no point does Stephenie Meyer make Bella a strong female character who tells either guy to go fuck himself. Angela eventually put her foot down with Jordan. Bella never does. Even at her own wedding, she lets Jacob make her feel like shit. It would be one thing if it was just in the first book and then Bella eventually learned to be strong, independent, and to stand up for herself. But she never does. She takes abuse right to the end, though the fourth book at least gives her a little credit once she becomes a vampire. Stephenie Meyer wrote her to be the complete 1800's helpless heroine tied to the railroad tracks, needing either Edward's or Jacob's help to bail her out. If it weren't for these two men in her life, she would have been dead in the first book. It's one hell of a message to send to readers.
