Does everyone remember the 80s George Lucas produced, Ron Howard directed fantasy flick?

I know it is derivative of LOTR and Star Wars and The Bible and Gulliver's Travels, but I absolutely worshipped this movie as a youth.

I am going to watch it tonight for the first time since I was a kid.  I hope it still holds up!  I think it will.

I remember the Brownies, Death Dogs, Madmartigan, General Kael, Sorsha, Queen Bavmorda, etc.

It was a beautifully shot epic adventure with a wonderful James Horner soundtrack.

Do you love or hate this film?  If so, why?  Give me your thoughts on the awesomeness that is Willow.

All fantasy that isn't The Legend of Zelda sucks. Books*, movies, heavy metal about wizards and dragons, they all suck.

*Based on the notion that all fantasy books are just LOTR (the only ones I've read) with different stupid names.

I loved Willow when I was little.  Along with movies such as Legend (which was my worship movie, and still remains one of my very favorites), Beast Master, LadyHawke...  Eric is currently reading Shadow Moon by George Lucas and Chris Claremont, (I haven't read it yet) Eric says it is basically a continuation from the movie.  I don't know if there is anything specific about the movie that I really enjoyed, just the fantasy aspect of it alone was enough to hook me--I remember it having a lot of action as well. And it did have wonderful music.  It has been a long long time since I have seen it--may have to rent it to watch again.

I am curious about the Shadow Trilogy of books.  They take place 15 years after the movie, Elora Danon is all growns up, Willow's name is changed, and some main characters from the movie die.  The reviews are mixed on amazon.

Ah, I love to dig up movies you've seen as a child. Sometimes you get awfully disappointed though, but Willow is a good movie, it doesn't feel too dated like many 80s flicks does nowadays. Another movie I re-watched recently is a movie called The Witches ( NOT of Eastwick, just The Witches) late 80s flick about a boy who visits his grandmother in England and then stumbles upon a Witch convention where at some point he gets turned into a mouse! anyone remembers it?

I remember that movie. Haven't seen it in yonks, but I remember it.

I saw Willow in the theater when it came out. Twice even. Haven't seen that one in forever either, but I'm in no rush to get a repeat performance. I liked it enough at the time, not sure if I could stand it now. I've discovered that my patience for some of those 80's films has waned considerably since that time. Bummer.

I was pretty disappointed with it.  Don't really remember what my issues were, probably had something to do with the fact I was a cynical 23 or 24 years old when it came out.

I was a kid when Willow came out so I think that enhanced the magic of the film to me seeing it through a child's eyes.

Surely somebody on here likes this film too!

I always loved fantasy since I was small and it was like a fantasy version of Star Wars which was right up my alley at that age.

One of my old roommates loved that movie, but I never took his word for it because he was a D&D freak. I love Labyrinth and Legend though.

Does anybody remember the movie Little Monsters with Fred Savage? That was one of my childhood faves. Watched it again recently and still liked it.

I still have Little Monsters on the same VHS tape I recorded it with back in the early 90's, sandwiched between Welcome Home, Roxy Carmichael and Darkman. I'm surprised the tape still works. I watched those three movies quite often when I was younger. I wish I'd had the foresight to record some things in SP mode rather than be cheap and try to cram multiple movies on board in EP mode. It would be nice to have higher-quality VHS recordings of some of those older movies that aren't so easy to find on DVD. (The Wizard for example. Not that I love that movie, but it was mildly entertaining to make fun of and it WAS the film that launched Super Mario 3...y'all remember that, right? "ZOMG HE FOUND TEH HIDDEN ZONE!" Poor Jenny Lewis, is there any film she's done that she shouldn't be ashamed of?)

Are you insinuating that Troop Beverly Hills is no good?

Val Kilmer made my pre-pubescent heart pitter-patter.  But I always got it confused it with Legend, the Tom Cruise fantasy movie.

I liked old firecrotch herself Joanne Whalley in Willow, who actually ended up marrying Val Kilmer.

Val Kilmer looks like he has gotten hungry.

At least I don't have to see him in the new Knight Rider where apparently he's still doing the voice of K.I.T.T. (I didn't think it was him in the series opener, because his voice suddenly acquired some bass. Maybe producers realized that his voice was too recognizable in the TV movie?)

I still haven't watched Willow yet, but it really does have an excellent moving score and gorgeous LOTR-like scenery (and LOTR plot similarities LOL).

Until LOTR graced the screen, this really was the best Star Wars-type movie based in a fantasy world which is what I yearned for when I was a wee little lad.

I'm pretty sure Will Arnett did K.I.T.T. in the TV movie. I wish he still did, so I could hear him say "Look at car, Michael!" Or something like that.

I submit that Val needs to do more comedy. Perhaps a sequel to Kiss Kiss Bang Bang.

Nope, it was Val Kilmer.

Or are you just funning me because Will Arnett does voiceovers for GMC and the new Knight Rider is obviously a whore to Ford? :)

Nope, I'm serious. Arnett was attached and recorded lines, but was let go because of the very fact you just mentioned.

So he's chubbed out a touch, whatever. Nothing a sweaty, week-long session in the bedroom with me wouldn't take care of.
