That was pretty cool.  Just wish I had thought to change the channel off of CBS- Katie Couric kind of got on my nerves.  Basically "let me comment on how non-partisan this event is, then flog Andrew Card into talking smack about Bush and Cheney"

For anyone who hasn't been to DC, it is really far from the Capitol to the Wash Memorial, and it was full of people all the way back.  Even with the pictures, I have a hard time getting a grasp of how many people that was.

and kind of funny that such a great orator fumbled the oath!

@Nefud- semi-seriously, but have you thought about being a community organizer?  I live in developed but unicorporated part of my county.  We the shaft in terms of emergency response, because there's always something else going on in Richmond for the city responders to deal with, and the county sherriff is based in a town about a half-hour away.  a few years ago we started getting neighborhood watch groups together, and these sort of coalesced into a bigger group that actually got a ballot measure for a small property tax increase  to pay for a dedicated sherriff deputy.  Unfortunately with California's retarded 2/3 needed for tax increases it didn't pass (62%- so close!), but it was at least a start. Basically it started by getting neighbors in contact via email, and setting up phone trees to spread the word about meetings and events, etc.  You don't have to save the country, making your community better is plenty good!

i'd be willing to knock on doors and talk to people, i'm just not sure what i could organize us to DO. "let's go burn down those two houses that are clearly warring drug dealers" sounds pretty sexy, but instigating a felony....hmmmm.....

seriously, i'm not sure what else we could do, aside from just making sure everyone is more comfy with each other

Obviously don't know your specific situation, but just getting the information out to people helps.  For example, figuring out what complaints you can make anonymously and which ones you have to leave a name for.  And get as many people to call for anything you can think of- dangerous dogs off-leash, noise violations, abandoned cars, trash/health violations, domestic abouse...  I'd imagine your police dept has some kind of community outreach liason who's job it is to come to you (or a community center) and tell you what you can do and how to do it. They might tell you what it would take to increase patrols in your area too...

Are the druggies renting the houses?  You can usually find out who the owners are and start sending letters to them detailing all the bad stuff going on.  They may be liable in some cases if something bad goes down.  The renters next door to us apparently moved from somewhere it was ok to throw your bags of trash in the street and let your pit-bull run loose- we got some letters off to the owner and those problems mostly disappeared.

Maybe even something as easy as pestering the city to fix the street lights...

I'll be honest, it takes a good leader to get the community going.  We had a pretty involved block group, but then a huge conflict blew up between the person who started it and another person, and our block hasn't had a full meeting in a couple of years.

Your situation reminds me of that in Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas.

Believe me, there WILL be jokes. I was a bit concerned by the pause between syllables when Aretha sang :"My cunt (pause) tree tis of thee"... & didn't care for being referred to as a "non-believer". Sounded a bit too much like "infidel" to me...

Why single out  particular beliefs at all? Aren't we ALL supposed to be equal?!

Some are more equal than others. The ones with God on their side.

The real God that is. Seen here with his son, The Messiah.

Those bags are useless and silly.  These are BAGS!  3 for less than $5.00, they hold up to 70 pounds each and one can carry an entire family's shopping cart worth of goodies.  The BEST!

Oh those large bags are fantastic! I ordered some slightly more expensive ones online only because I didn't want a store brand on them, and they're so massive, I only needed a couple of them to hold all my groceries for the week. The baggers at the store like to comment on that every time I come in. I do have some of the regular-sized ones for when I do smaller shopping trips to Fry's or Target. Though the one place I don't take my own bag is Sephora. Sorry, I love their shopping bags too much to give them up. Besides, they're sturdy and very reusable, which I do often. :D

I read on another message board that 4 million attended yesterday and no one missed work.

"Harry, I'm going to let you in on a little secret. Every day, once a day, give yourself a present. Don't plan it, don't wait for it, just let it happen. Could be a new shirt at the men's store, a catnap in your office chair, or two cups of good, hot, black coffee. Like this."  -Dale Cooper

to risk being repetitive, I was once among the Woodstock hippie-sheeple.  One lone dreamy gal among the crowd believing that "half a milliion strong" gathering had shifted the course of history.  But it is a pleasant memory.

2. was the sound system any good, could you actually hear music?

3. were you lucky enough to see pete townshend boot abbie hoffman in the ass?
