ang1, congratulations! A dog is an incomparable kind of companionship.

Was flipping through Why Dogs are Better than Cats (an incendiary title if there ever was one) and it said:

"A dog's love is expressed as loyalty, and this is not an easy concept for cat people to understand because the cat equivalent of loyalty is merely recognition. True loyalty is trust and devotion born of friendship and respect. Dogs believe in us, not because to them we seem like gods, but because to them we are their family; thus they can believe they can always count on our unconditional love."

I am trying hard to feel worthy of that after being conditioned to expect very little out of a recent toxic relationship myself. His reflexes imply he has been kicked, which breaks my heart, but that is how I feel, too.

Glad you and your Goldie have found eachother!

You all know where I stand on the Dog/Cat supremacy scale but I will add a cautionary word to the ladies in particular.  Do not think that a dog can replace a man.  It is very very tempting to do so.  There are so many ways in which they seem more desirable but try to allow for men as well as dogs in your circle of intimates.

You are great!!!! I dont think I want a dog to replace a man in my life..hmm..The thing is that may be for a certain period of time a good dog is better than a bad man(it is not about men only, the same is about women,I mean,I am not"antimen feminist",far from it)But what I ment is that a doggy is a good antistress factor,it helps a lot at least you see the things not so dark,it makes you laugh,it makes you go for a walk with your mp3 music and so on...What would be nice is to go for a walk with a good man and a good dog!

Very well stated. Training and handling a dog also builds assertiveness that can get lost when a bastard is grinding your spirit and esteem down.

You hear so much you can tell how much control a person has over their own lives by how their dog responds to them. Ideally, the right people should be drawn to a person with a happy, independent but attentive, healthy dog.

I know this LOOKS cruel, but our Siberian Husky does like the cold and the snow...here's a picture of him curled up on the back porch during the our "blizzard" this past week. We did bring him in one night though because it was pretty cold.

Generalizing to contact with human beings in general, I seriously doubt this little piece of wisdom. Having a companion around who doesn't make you wish he/she'd shut the fuck up, evaporate into thin air, or simply drop dead on the spot is priceless.
