if you're like me you've watched the show 43 times, discussed the bigger mysteries of the show to death, etc. but there's still little things i just don't get. i thought maybe we could share. :) 1. the intercut dog barking in the "road rage" scene in fwwm. i can't even begin to make a valid theory on this one. is it supposed to be another metaphor for bob, like fire or the owls? 2. "the great went" - no idea what this is supposed to mean 3. why there's a "mike and bob" and a "mike and bobby." i mean it gets kind of swept under the rug by cooper-- "different mike and bob" but the choice to name the pair of supernatural entities and pair of teen drugrunners with the same names was a conscious choice by the creative team. i just can't figure out why. 4. i almost made this thread about this line alone. when mike explains that he cut his arm off because he "saw the face of god," this really isn't much of an explanation. the judeo-christian god? what does the word "god" mean to an entity like mike anyway?

In the Pilot when Pete calls Truman, he says "SHE'S dead wrapped in plastic." This would imply by using the word she that he knows who is wrapped in plastic. Instead of the response any sane human with a brain cell would say (Who?), Truman asks "Where?" WTF? This bothers me to this day!
"Harry, I'm going to let you in on a little secret. Every day, once a day, give yourself a present. Don't plan it, don't wait for it, just let it happen. Could be a new shirt at the men's store, a catnap in your office chair, or two cups of good, hot, black coffee. Like this." -Dale Cooper

I've always found confusing the scene in episode 13 where Coop asks Gerard why he lied when he said he didn't know BOB. We know it is Mike and not Gerard who knows BOB yet he says BEFORE turning into Mike "It wasn't me, don't you understand? It wasn't me...". He says that when he's still Gerard...

Lucy is involved in three of the most puzzling mysteries of TP: - The mysterious phone caller. - The mysterious sad person from ep.27. - And the mysterious bambino daddy.

Perhaps if you’re a sheriff - and from a police procedural point of view – the only question of any worth in that sort of situation is –‘where’. ‘Who’ doesn’t help me, ‘What’ doesn’t help me. Just tell me Where you are and I’ll come on out and see for myself.

The dog is indeed a mystery, but I always thought it was connected to the line "the black dog runs at night", which is itself connected to the Tremonds...

1. the intercut dog barking in the "road rage" scene in fwwm. i can't even begin to make a valid theory on this one. is it supposed to be another metaphor for bob, like fire or the owls? |
1. There are two things I've been thinking about with this one. First, it could be a montage that associates the image of the barking dog to the feelings Leland (or perhaps Mike) is having at the moment. Second, it could be about showing how animals react to Bob's presence or something like that. Near the end of the movie it seems that Waldo the bird is getting all crazy when Leland gets closer to the cabin. In the same way some dog could be barking as it is sensing "supernatural" things (in fiction, and often in reality also, it is said that animals sense things humans can't sense). It also reminds me of "The Black Dog Runs at Night" song but how that is connected to anything, I've got no idea.
2. Yeah, if it's supposed to be some kind of a joke I just don't get it.
3. It could be David's and Mark's way of making this thing that might make the viewers suspect that Mike and Bobby killed Laura and the same time it might be one way to make Twin Peaks a little more different that any other TV show back then. Mark has said that they definitely wanted to make Twin Peaks different form other shows and I don't think there were many shows weird enough to put same names to characters.
4. Maybe he is referring to a creator of all people, entities, materia and existence. It don't have to be a certain god of a certain religion as it could be so that Mike knows the truth and has seen the real god, the creator, that exists even if there wouldn't be any religions out there. I'd say an entity like Mike would be more able to interact with a god that the mere mortals in the world. An entity like that is closer to angels than humans after all and angels should be able to see things like gods and stuff.

Maybe it was Mike speaking when they first asked if he knows BOB and for some reason he lied. Perhaps Gerard is aware of Mike and he knows that Mike lied but was unable to do anything about it or then he just thinks that as Cooper claims that they've asked about Bob but as he can't remember it happening he assumes it was something that happened when Mike was in charge.

I'm confused too by Gerard's presence in episode 8. He arrives to the sheriff's station, says to Lucy he's there to sell Harry some shoes and never shows up again in the episode. Is he sitting in there and everybody forgets about him?
Probably there was more of Gerard in ep.8 and his scenes were cut, but still it's really weird they didn't notice when editing the episode, and Lynch directed that one. I think he doesn't show up again until ep.10...selling shoes!

1. Remember, how Gerard speaks of stopping Bob? Maybe the dog represents the "hunt" for Bob! The road rage scene represents Gerard finding Leland (Bob). The dog barking is a metaphor for Gerard telling his master (God) that he found him and the hunt was a success.
2. Walter (Jacque) was asked at the 2000 Fest. He said he had no clue either. 3. I also found it interesting how Coop dismissed the connection as well; Harry and Lucy catch on immediately. Perhaps Mike and Bobby represent youth, innocence and the beginning of the corrupt soul. Mike and Bobby are young and can still change their lives if the make better choices which they do. Remember Mike stop selling drugs after Leo's football pass? " I'm done Bobby". Later Bobby starts wearing suit and working for Ben Horne as his executive assistance. Mike and Bobby change their paths and begin to lead a better quality of life. On the other hand, We have Bob and Mike who are older, pure evil, and members of the black lodge. The fate of the souls are determined and they can't change. However, Mike, stated that "When I saw the face of God, I was purified, took off the whole arm". But we later see him sitting in the Black Lodge. 4. A very good question. Perhaps a visitor or Dugpa from the White Lodge? But knowing DL, it was intentionally open ended as such for each viewer to decide for themselves. The word God, could mean alot of different things depending on one's belief system.

If someone called you and said, "She's dead", you would respond "Who?", not "Where?" The man behind the tree during Leo's meeting with Mike and Bobby in the woods. That would have been funny if it would have been Jacques Renault hiding behind a baseball bat thick tree. Truman didn't ask "Who?" because he already knew who it was because he killed Laura himself by suffocating her with his Monster 'Fro.
